Catherine Opie gives us "Girlfriends"

Catherine Opie is one of our generation's most celebrated photographers, and she also happens to be a lesbian. Her work is often queer, and her new exhibit, Girlfriends, is no different. In fact, you will recognize some of her subjects.

Jenny Shimizu

JD Samson

Katherine Moennig

Girlfriends is on display through April 24 at New York City's Gladstone Gallery. The exhibit is a series of color and black and white photography, both new and never-before-seen works from Opie's archive. The photographer seeks to "explore the nature of butch-dyke identity through portraits." Some of the other public figures involved include k.d. lang and Eileen Myles.

The New York Times writes, "Looking at her pictures can be uncomfortable, not because of their confrontational content but because they reveal as much about the beholder as the beheld." That's what Catherine Opie's work is all about.

If Kate had a pipe in her

If Kate had a pipe in her hands, she would look like a hobbit with that ring of smoke. But less hairy. And less stylish, because Gandalf could blow a whole "Black Pearl" into the sky.

Just recognized: Too many movie insiders...

Uhh...

does this mean that Kate Moennig is now out, and doesn't mind, or actively identifies, as sortakinda butch-dyke? 2 things: firstly, I'm not out myself, so I totally respect people's decision to not come out. If Kate wants to keep things secretive, it's up to her. But this does sort of push her out, no?

and secondly, Catherine Opie is wonderfully brilliant, I love that she's always looking at queer identities, both in terms of sexuality and gender. We need more positive or neutral representations of female masculinity, and she's always ready and there for us.

also - I WANT to see that picture of a "serious" k.d. lang. want, want, want.

Arrgh me too I want to see

Arrgh me too I want to see that photo of k.d. unless i've already seen it.

I agree..

I also think though, that even if Kate is not out of the "closet" that we all know that she's gay. I don't necessarily think she's really secretive about it in real life, only with hollywood press. To be honest, I would do the same thing if I were in her position, because the press really spins that type of thing way out of proportion. If she was deep in the closet like many think, then I'm sure she wouldn't come near this type of photography knowing that it was for majority of gay women. "Out" gay women. Also when that interview of Jennifer alluding to gay woman, she stated Kate as one of them, and I'm sure as hell that Kate didn't have a problem with it. And how would Jen know kate was gay, if she didn't speak about it personally?
DRINA's picture

Yup.

I will totally be checking this out. Cathernie Opie is def on my list of faves.

P.S. A dash of Kate Moennig never hurt anybody either. Is this some kind of "statement" for her, er no?

Kate Kate!!!

Cool photographs..... didn't know about Catherine Opie. Is Shane, Kate coming out then? Cuz most of the women in Girlfriends, if not all, are out and about.. so... :)

I love Catherine Opie!!! I wish I could see this gallery in person.

& the first thing I thought when I read this that it could possibly be a little hint to Kates sexuality? ...Hmm... either way I love her shot.

Like many here, I can't help

Like many here, I can't help but wonder what this may or may not mean about Ms. Moennig's public sexual identity.  But she'll probably keep us guessing.  I'll just keep assuming she is, in fact, queer since it makes me happier to think that and I need all the happiness I can get right now.

Love these portraits! The Gladstone Gallery website has a few more of her works, they're all pretty neat!

Ehm I don't think Moennig is 'coming' out - she just is gay. Big deal? I think not. While of course I don't know her I reckon that's the way she's going about it. (I realize that by even stating this I'm a hypocrite haha but whatever)

Keraunophilliac's picture

Ms Moennig

When I saw her picture there I just assumed it was because she's such a lesbian icon and played a character(and seems to have the same image in real life) that fits in with the desription of the work"explore the nature of butch-dyke identity through portraits.". Considering the varied ideas of what butch is.

I reckon that would be an interesting twist to the exhibit as well.

Also, that picture above posted by KayVee! I've seen it before and it's amazing. Seriously amazing. A few seconds of looking at it and it makes me think of so many ways to interperet* it. Woah
