Callie Torres gets a new love interestThere must be a list of names somewhere, floating around Hollywood, that details what actresses will and won't do same-sex love scenes. Janina Gavankar — yes Jessica Capshaw It seems that the casting directors of The L Word and Grey's Anatomy both select from the same pool of women who are into kissing other women on screen. Though Janina didn't have much face time on Grey's, and certainly not any make-out scenes, E! Online is reporting that Jessica Capshaw has been cast as a new love interest for Callie Torres. You may remember her as Bette's TA who was hot for teacher.
The tough job of making out with Sara Ramirez is now Capshaw's, for at least three episodes beginning in January. She plays pediatrician Dr. Arizona Robbins, who is at Seattle Grace to help Bailey with a case. It seems as if Melissa George is truly off the hook for now. Things change quickly around these parts, though, so I wouldn't get too comfortable if I were her. What do you think of the new pairing? And does Capshaw look a lot like Dr. Erica Hahn to you, or is it just me? Submitted by on December 5, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

Wait, what? Didn't Callie
Wait, what? Didn't Callie and Melissa George's character just spend an episode making googly-eyes at each other? This show is just getting too confusing.
(Though Callie and Sloan bonding over "hot, naked, available interns" was pretty funny)
that's what i thought..
so what does the googly-eyes mean? i hate that they are always getting our hopes up and then let us down...
and btw, she looks like erica hanh.. i like mellissa george more (i effing love her accent!!!!)..
No you're not delusional
First, Grey's Anatomy
First, Grey's Anatomy disappointed me anyway, in how the Callie-Erica storyline just ended, and Hahn was off the show, in like 1 episode, that was fuckin ridculous. But now, I thought that Melissa George, or as I refer to her, Lauren from Alias, seemed to be the new interest. Her scenes with Sara Ramirez were my favorite of Thursdays episodes. I would rather her love interest be Melissa George, they seem to have chemistry already, and she flustered Callie.
BTW, when was Janina on Grey's Anatomy?
it is when
If this turns out to be
If this turns out to be true then I'm convinced that the Grey's Anatomy people just got rid of Erica/Brooke simply due to the way she looks. She obviously didn't fufil their fantasy ideal of what 2 women together should look like or something.
I never really watch Grey's (though watched the whole Erica/Callie thing on various YouTube videos & enjoyed it so far as the beginning of the new season) but I'm finding this whole situation around the show now utterly bizarre.
Callie and Sadie
Interesting!
I was just warming up to the thought of Callie with Sadie, since I didn't find the latter as annoying in the latest episode and Callie is beyond smoking when she's exclaiming "crazy hot!" with that look in her eyes.
But this is intriguing, I think. I do think Callie needs to be on her own for a while, and I assume Capshaw won't come on the show just yet. It's going to be difficult to create a story with much depth if Capshaw is only onboard for three eppies. Callie is a secondary character and three episodes just won't be enought to get some substance. But as for hotness? Sure! :D
seems like the execs got
seems like the execs got what they wanted. a younger, "hotter" actress playing a lesbian. idiots.
------------------------------------------------------
No on H8! pics
good use of " " s
because well they indeed got younger, they will have to try a lot harder to get someone hotter than Brooke Smith!
a bit skeptical...
Even since yesterdays episode I started thinking what my reaction would be if Callie would actually get involved with a woman again. First of all I need to see it happen first, before I believe it. And then I need to see if it's written well, before I can start liking it... I'll sure be checking in. But what about Shonda saying she wasn't simply going to replace erica by 'another lesbian'? Ah... we'll see. I'm definitely not getting so involved again, just to be let down again.
Does make you think that it really was about Erica not being 'hot' enough to play a lesbian...
BetweenThaLines on youtube & livejournal
Besides being an admitted
ugh
Ugh! What happened to
"I just like kissing one girl. You." What happened to that? I can't get into a storyline which involves Callie kissing another woman if there isn't any depth to it. Because a three-episode story arch? Can't make me feel the connection. And what happend to Shonda saying "We won't just replace Erica with another lesbian"?
While I thought Callie thinking Sadie flirted with her was fun to watch, it was unbelievable, because those two don't have anything in common and don't have great chemistry. Callie fell for Erica because she was strong, smart, independante, mature,... and now it seems they are just trying to replace Erica with a younger, 'hotter' version. There's no way to replace someone like Erica, but I guess the exces don't get that.
http://babydyke.blogspot.com/ - my take on all things lesbian
I do not find Capshaw Jr.
Oh yeah ...
every time i saw
every time i saw dr. erica haun all i heard was "it puts the lotion on its skin"
jessica capshaw is cute but i want callie and sadie to get together
Im not crazy, my reality is just different then yours.
haha
Not Stubborn but Im faithful 2 ERICA HAHN
I just love Erica HAHn!!
I loved that character since the guest appereance so no, NO Sadie or that other girL, Im sorry I may sound weird but I spend season 1,2,3,happy with the regular storyline then so so happy in season 4, and then season 5 hoping & waiting....AHHH Sorry Im still really upset.
Call me a biatch w/ a long memory
I'm a cranky biatch when it comes to shows messing w/ characters I've made an emotional investment in and I'm pretty damn unforgiving when they do.
That's why I stopped watching Grey's after they fired Brooke Smith. The only reason I started watching was for the Callie and Erica storyline which they promised was the real deal. They were going to explore their coming out to coworkers and Callie to her father. Nice job coming through on that one. Callie w/ plan B or plan C doesn't cut it with me. It feels like bait and switch, hoping I have a short memory and that I'll come crawling back to something more vapid and pretty. Not happening.
I still haven't forgiven Joss Whedon for killing Tara!
For those who wanted the season of Callica they didn't get, check out:

Wow, you just expressed my
Angie Harmon
Jill Hennessy
Angie Harmon was not in Chutney Popcorn
That was definitely Jill Hennessy.
Cool.
If a tv couple isn't Mulder and Scully or Bette and Tina, my investment into them is going to be moderate at best. Callica wasn't that big a deal to me. It was interesting but its demise wasn't enough to make me stop watching the show.
They must be really serious about following Callie's post-divorce bisexual(?) journey. Just in time for February sweeps.
I'm excited. JC was great as Nadia.Tee hee.
That made me laugh quite heartily.
As far as the Grey's news, to that I say, "Meh". I don't watch the show and I certainly won't be watching any time soon because of that last stunt. However, if AE should mention something worth taking a peak at, I'll seek it out on YouTube. Until such time, Grey's can (still) suck it. And, Bette's TA annoyed me before she disappeared.

~It means pride.~
Whose Fantasy?
Why the f*ck does ABC care so much about the "Macho MALE viewer, pleasing to the eye, girl-on-girl fantasy sh*t" when the audience hardly consists of men like that?? Is this some sort of abuse of power from the big execs who used to get picked on in school, who now have a big position and uses primetime television production as their playground?
I'm sorry I haven't chimed in here since they fired Brooke, but this makes me blow my top!
WTMFF?
I don't watch it anymore
sigh....
Even though I'm happy the writers aren't de-gaying Callie, I'm also really sad and disapointed because ABC ruined a really amazing relationship and fired an incredible actress. I really wanted Callica to work and having Erica being replaced is just really sort of sad for me. Grey's is getting increasingly harder to watch with every turn...
Great cast, terrible writing
Grey's Anatomy could turn all the women gay and I still wouldn't watch it. They jumped the shark long ago. I tuned back in for Callica and I didn't care for the way they were handling that storyline but watched for the actresses. Once they fired Brooke Smith, they lost me for good.
Shallow & patronizing
To replace a love interest (Erica Hahn) who had substance as a character and loved Callie, and to replace the beginnings of a romance based on a caring and solid friendship, for this??
And to have Callie repeatedly and hurtfully reject Erica, only to see her suddenly tripping over herself lusting after a girl based on her physical appearance alone??
Sounds like the stereotypical hetero male "hot girl on girl" sex fantasy to me.
I will never again be a fan of this show. I will not watch a show run by people who have done what they've done. I do not want to help validate their lack of integrity.
Oh please...
ohhh goshhh
Honestly I think people like Erica more because they think what happened to her stinks. She was not that great of a character and I found her to be overly harsh and extremely hard to relate to on any level. She was a bully.
W/r/t Callica, Callie had more chemistry with Mark the entire time she was "dating" Erica. I don't understand why people would rather see it forced. Their relationship was awkward and painful to watch most of the time. Brooke Smith is awesome, no doubt, but don't be mad just bc you think she was replaced with someone prettier. Sadie is also a completely different character and shows a really interesting side of Callie. Sadie and Callie were sparking more last night in 5 minutes than Erica and her had all season.
Im all for Sadie and Erica!! But I also saw somewhere that it basically falls off the face of the earth for no reason as well. So I guess we'll see what happens.
finally!
YES!!! YES!!!
I totally agree: their relationship was something more than awkward... they didn't have that much chemistry. I mean, the storyline was ok (at the beginning) the way they fell in love and everything, it was a good idea... but then... well, no comments
Sadie and Callie's scenes were hilarious!! whe they were looking at the X-rays you could totally see the sparks!!
Maybe the whole Brooke Smith thing was for the best... I'll still be watching
I Liked Hahn
Because she was flawed: she was pushy and blunt, even slightly cruel. But I got the sense that she was motivated by perfectionism and a certain sense of social awkwardness. I can relate to that, as I'm sure many people can. And since we were being set up to see Hahn as a hertofore closeted and/or late-blooming lesbian, it seemed that there was a lot of room for her character to grow. Maybe in a relationship where she could be honast about her desires for the first time she might have become more open, more confident that she was likeble and loved, more willing to connect....
It strikes me as terribly sad and an insult to viewers' intelligence that the networks couldn't trust us to see past the facade. On the other hand, maybe it is they who can't see past the surface. As someone else pointed out above, the networks mostly seem interested in seeing hot young women getting it on for carnal pleasure, character and personality be damned.
Yeah, who made her
Yeah, who made her character that way? Shonda and co. (Their intention was to make her unlikeable at first. That meant a softening up later on, which Brooke had mentioned would be shown this season before she was fired.)
And who made her a lesbian? Shonda and co. (After they saw "chemistry" between those two, which made them decide to go down this unintended path.)
And who threw her under a bus when they couldn't deliver on their intended paths? .....
As for me, it's not that I like Erica Hahn more because of the way Brooke Smith was dismissed. I only became a fan of Grey's because they introduced a character like Erica Hahn (and were seemingly brave enough to do what was promised with Callica).
Give this lady a prize!! :-)
Everything you say is right on and I've thought these very things myself! The people who complain about Hahn's character forget she was written that way. Shonda & Co took it too far for too long. Christina is also prickly, sucks at teaching and is abusive of interns. She's a lot like Hahn! But her character is better written so people relate more.
Very early on Hahn was given some great one liners, eg. Christina tells Hahn off only to find she's the new head of cardio and Hahn replies, "Oh, this is going to be SO much fun!" In reference to McDreamy and McSteamy Hahn asks, "Are you two a couple?" We needed to see more of that the snarky humor. What happened?? And we needed to see Erica revealed, the woman behind Hahn, sooner.
And that bologna w/ Callie running off to McSteamy every ten seconds for sex after she and Hahn started dating and the numerous rejections of Erica in her most vulnerable moments? I found it repulsive and made Callie, whom I initially liked, quite unlikeable to me. But I'm sure the male audience members were reassured of their masculinity and primacy in the bedroom. Or perhaps it was some of the writers? It was another drop of the ball in my book.
Shonda & Co couldn't deliver but Brooke paid the price for it. They fired the wrong person.
Lame.
I stopped watching after Brooke's last appearance, and haven't looked back since. The show has completely lost its appeal to me-- I don't even CARE if they want to continue exploring Callie's sexuality because the way I see it they blew it when it mattered, what's the point now? The writers and producers are floundering in a completely wasted space.
And honestly, seeing who they have cast as her new love interest really, REALLY gets me angry. Like, they can't be a little more subtle as to why they fired Brooke in the first place? Sorry... but I have a tendency to choose sides in these matters, and I choose Brooke! Screw this show.
and...
One more thing... Callica's storyline was SO good in season 4. The writing in season 5 was CRAP and they could have done a lot more with the characters, and a lot LESS to alienate the audience (straight AND gay). I had really high hopes for the storyline on the whole and thought that if I could just make it through all the bollocks of those first seven episodes, then it would finally settle down and actually allow Callie and Erica to have a stable, reasonably-portrayed relationship on the show. Then lo and behold, they fire Brooke. All that investment and it led to nothing. I took it while it lasted, but now, looking back, I have nothing but criticism for the writing and the general storyline they came up with this season. It was pure and utter shyte.
DITTO
I couldn't agree with you more, ALIMORA, you took the words right out of my mouth !
I too, have been done with Grey's since the firing of Brooke Smiths....And it does upset me, terribly, to know that the firing could have been because she was not hot enough....Don't even want to start on that !!
errrrrrrrrgh
They fired Melissa George for this??? *sigh*
There is no such thing as Silence
I was hoping...
Me too....
so hoping for Callie and Sadie, especially after Thurs episode, I love Melissa George ever since she played Angel on Home and Away!...
I liked the Callie and Erica storyline, but really think Callie and Sadie were more fun to watch and had more chemistry in this one episode than all the episodes Callie and Erica were together.
Agreed.
Whether it was just crap writing or an intentional boot to Brooke Smith's (nontraditionally normal-sized) behind, the Callica storyline was really low-grade, and kind of awkward to watch. Even with whole 'glasses' revelation was underscored by Callie looking uncomfortable in the corner.
I'll probably watch in January, maybe. Jess Capshaw's playing a blonde pediatrician? Can we say Spencer Carlin's older sister? That has 'cute potential'. Chemistrywise, I think that's what Callie needs, someone who balances her out, not adds to her deadpan.
Inkblots
Callica lack of chemistry...
I agree with both you ladies above... Alot of the scenes with Callie and Erica made me cringe cause they felt so forced and unatural and lacked chemistry. Now I'm hoping for a little more spice! HA! Although I don't like the way they handled Erica's exit... she was too bitchy for my taste.
I won't be watching.
Sara Ramirez.....
Sara Ramirez Is really hot and I dont care what happens in the show as long as she stays. I basically watch it for her. Is that bad? haha
Do babies know that other babies, are babies?
I'm sick of this garbage by
I'm sick of this garbage by now. I think throwing random younger "hotter" flings at Callie is just crap.
Jessica Capshaw and Melissa George have nothing on Brooke Smith.
i watched it for brooke
cuz the show is mostly one big frakin trainwreck.
seriously, brooke smith could read the phonebook for an hour and i would be happy. her voice is TEH SEX.
