Brandi Carlile officially comes out with release of "Give Up the Ghost"

I would be lying if I didn't say that I was hoping for this: Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile has officially commented on her sexuality for the first time since she signed to Columbia Records and released two hit albums, including the newest, Give up the Ghost. The verdict: She's gay. Here's where we all say, "Duh" but give her a virtual fist bump.

The Seattle-based musician that has a country-pop-alt-rock sound has toured extensively with The Indigo Girls, giving her wide exposure to gay women and fans of contemporary folk that came out to see Amy Ray and Emily Salier (myself included). While it was clear to most fans that she was a lesbian (on-stage jokes or sly winks when singing a love song about a man added to the intrigue), Brandi did not speak about her orientation with the press, and only recently mentioned her partner, Kim, in a speech she gave for her Looking Out foundation.

This week, she spoke with The L.A. Times pop critic Ann Powers, and opened up about her sexuality, saying, "I don't think it factors in to the way people relate to the lyrics" and that she wants to be someone that young gay women can look up to.

"I hope that somewhere in Small Town, USA, a 15-year-old kid looks to me as a role model the way I looked at the Indigo Girls and Elton John as role models," Brandi said. "And I hope they also recognize that the reason why I don't have to have a lot of formality around it, the reason why I don't have to wear it on my sleeve and make a spectacle of it, is because there were people before me who paved the way so I wouldn't have to."

15-year-olds and 50-year-olds alike, I'm sure, will be glad to see Brandi is opening up about her being a lesbian, because not only is she talented, but she's incredibly successful. We could always use another beautiful and intelligent face as a representation of our community.

The rest of the article includes a lot of great information on the recording of Give Up the Ghost and her career so far. But one of my favorite parts is when Powers describes Brandi's ideas for what she'd like to do now that the new album is out and doing well.

Her hopes for the immediate future involve one television spot — "I wanna go on Ellen, " she said with a shy grin.

I think we'd all like to see that. Get on it, Ellen!

Brandi Carlile!

So, I had been having a pretty crappy day, but you guys just put Brandi Carlile on the front page and that not only made today all right, it pre-emptively made the rest of the week better too. Thanks!! :)

Finally some Brandi action on AE!

The article is extremely well-written and remains very professional.  I've always laughed at how people would debate on or get riled up about Brandi's sexuality.  Technically, she's always been out - it just isn't something she's talked about 'cus it is about the music.  In the past, she's neglected to comment on her relationship, period, because it wasn't about that.  It's not that she was closeted.  Heck, many of us have known about her and Kim for years.  Still, it is pretty cool and vindicating (in a sort of way) to see it in writing by a prominent publication.  Here's to you, Brandi!  Now let's see her in some of the next AE Lists, not to mention Ellen's show!

I'm your hero and you're my weakness

she's amazing

I saw her live in Minneapolis at the end of last month and was blown away.  She sounds better live than on her records.  I'm glad she's finally openning up about being gay, and more power to her.
TehMorp's picture

please, God, tell me I'm finally getting some gaydar

I've never heard this musician, nor heard of her before yesterday, but yesterday I was strolling through Borders and I saw a poster advertising her CD, and I thought, "Mmmm, a poster of an attractive lesbian..."

Could it be that some freak accident has rendered me gaydar-enabled??

Oh, wait, my usual method of identifying lesbians is to assume that anyone who's hot is gay. I guess my powers of correctly identifying dykes is probably still dormant, occasional instances of correctness notwithstanding... :(

Brandi definitely has that vibe

I always wondered about her......She's extremely talented and her music is so passionate and raw.  Listening to her music puts me at ease.  That would be amazing if Ellen had Brandi come on her show--Brandi could perform AND talk it up.

wonderful

I met Brandi a few months ago after her concert in Milwaukee, and she was so down to earth and friendly. The show was great-- wonderful energy. there wasn't any question to me that she was gay, but I'm glad she wrote about it. Nice.

this makes me very happy

brandi was a part of my coming out process. me realizing i spent a little too much time looking at the pictures in the liner notes of her first album definitely had me questioning things.

I was sure she was :)

And I am happy she's on our team. I love her music since the beginning of her career. A great artist indeed.

She's right

She's right her sexuality, should have no bearing on her music. I love her no more or less after the fact. Yet, its just so great to officially know. Like her music.

Brandi

I don't listen to that type of music so this doesn't really effect me but good for her I guess, though it was kind of obvious anyway.

What's important

This was posted on the message board of Brandi's fan site AgainToday.com

"In light of the LA Times article and Brandi's comments about her sexuality, the following message was sent from Brandi.

I'm really glad someone actually had the guts to ask me about it!
and i really lucked out because it was in a really special way....
its important for kids/struggling adults to know that we are entitled
to the mainstream.. we refuse to separate ourselves from it by
exploiting our sexuality(that is in NO way implying that the
generation before us did.they most certainly fought hard and took
enormous blows so that we could exist equally in society...paving the
way for people like me)

living honestly is the example."

LOVE Brandi!

"all of these lines across my face tell you the story of who I am." I love Brandi's music. Her voice is just so raw & strong. I just wish she'd get more tv exposure. I rarely ever get to see her on tv.

Brandi!

Gods, I love her.  I'm really happy that she's *finally* being more open about her sexuality, simply because she would be such a great role model for young lesbians.

Good for her!

I am glad that she feels comfortable being out. If we all lived our lives honestly, we could show the world what a huge contribution gays and lesbians make. I loved her music before this news and I will love her music just as much now.

ilovebrandicarlile.

i find this kind of ironic. (: i was just listening to her new album on my ipod about five minutes ago, and than i get on here and she's on the front of the website! ha, and it's also kinda ironic that i'm a fifteen year old, living in Hicktown, USA. literally. Our town was the hicktown picked for jason aldean to come and perform about three years ago. bahhhaa, just thought i'd share that.

Love her!

I guess I'm a 'bit' of a Brandi fan.  I've seen her in concert 4 times this year......including L.A. on Saturday and........yes.....her live shows are addicting!

I'm glad that it's finally "official".  She is an incredible performer and artist plus she is absolutely amazing to her fans.

I can't wait to see and hear what she does next.

Thanks Brandi!!!!!

Finally!

She is very sexy, and I always had a feeling she was a lesbian.  So glad she decided to make it 'official.'

I totally got the vibe that

I totally got the vibe that she was a lesbian, the very first time I saw her (same vibe as with Anika Moa).  I heard that she was gay a few months ago when Melissa Ferrick accidentally outed her at a concert.  She has an amazing voice and is brilliant in concert.

I remember the first time I

I remember the first time I had ever heard or seen anything about Brandi Carlile was way back in 2004 when ads for her cd Brandi Carlile were on here; I was like "Who's that girl, she has to be gay because she's on an ad on afterellen.com". So I've been a fan of her's since then. Thank You afterellen.com, for your ads showed me the way.

I was just at her show on Friday, it was my fourth time seeing her and second time meeting her. I was so lucky to have won tickets because I had no money to buy them. That show was definitely my favorite out of all the times I've seen her; the band was great, the crowd behaved, and she was beyond amazing. I also love the fact that she likes coming to Tucson, that's a plus for living here, we get special Brandi Carlile moments. That lovely and talented woman is so worth the two hour walk home that I had to do after the show.

i called it the when mtv or

i called it the when mtv or vh1 was showcasing her music a couple of years ago and i thought, apart from how good her music was, "wow, that girl is gay."

anyway, i thought the stuff she said about being a role model and how others had already paved the way was pretty great.

For those of us who have

For those of us who have been fans for a while, there was never any issue of whether or not she was gay. And although I was sad that she wasn't "out", I always thought that it didn't really matter as far as my enjoyment of the music went. This was because I could make the songs be about whatever I wanted them to be about when I listened to them. I still feel that way (although I am chuffed to bits she finally is talking about being gay), and agree with her when she says "I don't think it factors in to the way people relate to the lyrics". I hope that her Midwestern fan base feel the same way. But if not it's their lose. I know I would be more than happy not to have to fight them off for a good spot at her shows.

Finally,

I'm glad to know that she's a lesbian. I thought she's already out though.

Maybe she's not my number

Maybe she's not my number one, but I always appreciate another talented girl with a guitar.
And she's freaking hot :)))

It's great that she finally made it clear in mainstream media.
Visibility matters :)

HUGE fan

I absolutely adore Brandi, and I am so happy that she has finally officially come out. I remember when I first became a huge fan about a year ago that I read that she did come out many years ago, but that it was put under the wraps for the most part. So I've known, but for her to come out in the LA Times and all that makes me feel great. She is amazing (and gorgeous!). I wish I could have seen either of her shows in San Francisco this week, but I saw her in June there. What a great show.

And I hope that she gets to go on Ellen because that would be perfect.

Gabby's picture

Nonchalant

I like that she is very casual about it. I went to school in the Tacoma / Seattle area and we all would go to this coffee shop in Queen Anne to see this great and very attractive songwriter. It was kind of a running joke that we only liked queer songwriter ladies at the time (here's another lady guitar player for some of you to look up... vicci martinez). Of course that was not true, but the crush is so much deeper if they are on your team, right? From a couple of the shows I saw in Bellingham, she's been out for a long time.

I'm happy that she is doing so well now. Selling out larger and larger theaters! I'm seeing her tomorrow night in Portland. I miss the smaller shows where she would do a meet and greet after the show, but am really proud those days are long gone.

I have to recommend her first album for anyone who is discovering her for the first, self titled album. Very intimate and you will fall in love. Maybe. If you like that sort of thing.

I've been a fan of Brandi's

I've been a fan of Brandi's for a few years now, and I'm so happy that she's so open about being a lesbian. I've been to 5 of her shows and each one has been better than the last, if you haven't seen her live, you're missing out. Such a gorgeous, talented woman. :)

I want to thank AE for this

I want to thank AE for this article. I'd had actually never heard of her until I read this. That led me to looking up her video for The Story on youtube. I was soo far gone on her after that. I went out and bought all 3 of her albums on wednesday. I can't even pick a favorite song right now.

Her newest album is beyond awesome. I'm so glad she made a video for Dreams. That was one of the songs that first jumped out at me. Then I watched a video where she was talking about how that song was inspired by sex dreams! Made it even better. Heh.
