Bishop Gene Robinson gets some laughs on "The Daily Show"Last night, Jon Stewart covered the Presidential Inauguration, including the opening ceremony prayer from openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson that was cut off on HBO. Then the Bishop came on to tell Jon about his prayers for Reverend Rick Warren, his hope for a continued relationship with Barack Obama on LGBT issues, and his dream for a gay president in the future. Who do you think had a bigger impact on the idea of religion and LGBT rights in this inauguration: Bishop Robinson or Reverend Warren? Submitted by on January 21, 2009 - 2:30pm. |

I am so glad...
That someone in the relatively mainstream media has picked him up as a guest and asked about his prayer being omitted from the HBO special. I was there, and his prayer was really pretty wonderful (and challenging, in many ways) so it made me sad to hear this.
If you haven't heard it already, take the time to look it up.
I'm Glad To Know Who Bishop Gene Robinson Is

When I first heard the news there was going to be an openly gay bishop taking part in the inaugural cremonies,I had no idea who was this openly gay bishop. I also did not know a darn thing about Bishop Robinson. Please don't call me ignorant. I simply do not run in that circle or an advocate reader of the white mainstream magazines. Now I know a little bit of who this gracious and humble bishop is I am to know he too became part of history. I am sad that his prayer was cut out. You know this will hurt the person or group of people who made that call. They will karmically get theirs.
I'm glad Jon Stewart asked Bishop Gene Robinson to be his guest on his show. It's honored to hear Bishop Robinson speak. I will find his prayer somewhere in youtube land.

Bishop Gene Robinson
He is wonderful.
"You as a bishop are sort of doubly handcapped in that situation. Only being able to move diagnoly"
"John you have to understand there's a queen on the board as well"
HAHAHA You go Bishop Robinson!
As far as Rick Warren. I watched the whole inauguration but did mute the tv when he was on. I have no interest to hear any of what he has to say.

That made me ROFL so hard.
so sad it was cut!
so glad to see he was at least given SOME air time after being cut from HBO. i thought his prayer was great. and the fact that he was asked to speak at such a historical event definitely signifies movement in the right direction =)
his prayer was pretty easy to find on youtube btw...too bad it was warren's that was seen by the masses =( since i was watching the inauguration at school with my students, i unfortunately had to listen to rick warren pray about loving others..HA. ugh he sickens me.
side note: i first learned about bishop robinson through a great documentary called 'for the bible tells me so' i highly recommend it to anyone that has a religious family to deal with!
anyway...thanks for posting the clip =)
I first learned about him
I first learned about him through "For the bible tells me so" as well. I think it's good to watch even if one doesn't have a religious family. My family isn't religious and I am agnostic but I still enjoyed the documentary.

I totally agree!
Jon's chess bit made me laugh the most as it was so random but the Bishop had a super fast comeback which was also funny, as was watching Jon laugh (I think I now love them both!)
Jon Stewart is amazing, glad he pointed this out, and I'm sure RachelMaddow was amazing too, i just haven't seen that paritcular one

Robinson or Warren.
Well, from what I have seen, if you were not actually there in DC for the inauguration then there is a good chance you never heard about Gene Robinson in association with the event. Because it really did not get as much press as Warren did beforehand either.
Now Rick Warren, maybe I am biased...but he did not seem to get much applause...in comparison to a lot of the other people (aside from Pres Obama) who were introduced and went up to the microphone. He did his prayer and he was done and he was gone.
Don't forget Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery
Those who didn't stop watching the inauguration as soon as Obama's part was done heard Lowery give the benediction, and he certainly made a much stronger impression than Warren did - he's a much better speaker.
Lowery is very supportive of gay rights. Years ago he gave an amazing eulogy at the funeral of Coretta Scott King in which he mentioned her support of gay rights also. (And zinged Bush, who was sitting behind him, with the line "Billions for war, but no more for the poor." The guy's not afraid to speak truth to power!)
yeah Jon Stewart!
lol, 'there's also a Queen on the Board' that's one quick Bishop!
