Beyoncé keeps up with acting by doing what she does best: singing

Beyoncé was born and bred to be a star. She's managed to emerge from being one-fourth (and, later, one-third) of Destiny's Child to be a household name (the "Knowles" isn't even necessary). It's not just because of her music, though: Beyoncé has crossed over into films, and since her turn as Foxy Cleopatra in Austin Powers 3, her movies have come to utilize both her musical and acting talents. Her new role is no exception, as she's signed on to star in the biopic as Eartha Kitt, the legendary vocalist.

Having recently played the Diana Ross-based character in the film adaptation of Dreamgirls, it seems Beyoncé's singing skills are just as (if not more) important when it comes to her casting (see: Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, The Fighting Temptations and the upcoming Cadillac Records, in which she plays Etta James).

Of course, she's not the only R&B singer who could handle these juicy roles — I'm sure she's edged out many other well-known, up-and-coming women of color. In fact, Beyoncé's voice seems almost too Beyoncé to be anyone else, so it might actually take away from her playing other women with signature vocals. That aside, I can see her doing her best to take over some other women's roles in the future, such as Tina Turner, Gladys Knight or Martha Reeves.

Who do you think Beyoncé could play in the future? Will she ever do something completely different and keep us on our toes?

she's getting so repetitive.

she's getting so repetitive. i'm also getting tired of her voice. beyonce, stfd. she better not be in aida. i'm also glad she didn't touch the princess and the frog.

doesn't hollywood know that other black girls who can sing and are just as pretty as her exist?

Toni Braxton.

That is who should have gotten the role.  Toni Braxton looks and sings more like Eartha Kitt than Beyonce Knowles does.  Toni also has the maturity for the part.  I think she(Beyonce) is too overrated for her own good.

Dreamgirls showed it all

In that movie, we could all see that Beyoncé is, yes, definitely a star. But also that she's not the best singer around, and that there are others who might be able to portray legendary artists better than she can.

I think the world and the industry are obsessed with that star-quality she has, that thing that makes people (the ones that love her, lol) incapable of taking their eyes off her.

But agreed, she's taking her success a little for granted these days..

Autobiography

I think it would be interesting to see Beyoncé pull an Eminem, & play herself in an autobiopic.  With all the opinions out there surrounding her being, I'd expect the pull would be something magnetic.

I may be alone in thinking that channeling powerful women is bound to bring forth significant energy from the child of destiny.  But if your spirit was in a position to birth a living legend, would you not give it your all?

Oh my God! Thank you so much

Oh my God! Thank you so much for posting that it was awesome. Although I don't think she's the greatest actress, She is an amazing performer. She is in my top 10 favorite singers. Flawless on stage. Every note perfect, every move precise. Some of these ladies don't seem to appreciate this powerful talent.  I'll give you there are much better actors, but don't you talk about my babies' singing. One of my favorites is "Flaws and All". She is so versatile.

Depends

How well Ms. Knowles does depends primarily on how much the movie white-washes Ms. Kitt's life. If this is a sanitized version, like the Diana Ross version of Lady Day's (Billie Holliday), then she'll probably do ok. But if the film wants to present the real Eartha Kitt - then whoever hired her made a huge mistake, 'cause Ms. Kitt is waaaayyy too ... ummm ... "different" for a lightweight like Ms. Knowles to pull off. And by "different" I mean seriously wild, seriously strange, and seriously damaged.

Years ago I came across a long documentary on Ms. Kitt that was mainly of her taking about herself. At the time her career was at an all time low and I guess she figured that she had nothing to lose by putting all her stuff out there. Oh. My. God. The woman has a ton of talent and that signature style that is uniquely her own. She also has huge personal issues, especially about her skin color, that stem from her childhood. And that ego ... oh, my! It made sense in context (big ol defensive mechanism) but I doubt that a Hollywod film that is a star-making vehicle for Ms. Knowles will take the time to present that context.

BTW: Ms. Bendix - I love you, I really do. But, please - Beyonce as Tina Turner? NO, NO - a thousand times NO!!!! Nobody, but nobody will ever match Angela Bassett as The Queen of Rock and Roll in "What's Love Got to Do With It." Ms. Bassett should have won the Oscar for that; she was robbed.

I really like Beyonce, however...

I cannot picture her playing the part of Eartha Kitt.  Actually, there isn't any current pop star that I can picture playing that role.  There's nobody in terms of voice or looks to match her.  Perhaps someone really grounded in Broadway or even Cabaret with a gritty voice could do it.  I also think it would require someone a little bit older, maybe early 30's.

I could see someone like Jasmine Guy playing this role, although I'm not familiar with her singing voice.  It could be dubbed if necessary the way Angela Bassett played Tina Turner with a dubbed singing voice.  Whoever pulls off the role of Eartha Kitt has to be one hell of an actress to be believeable for me.

Gladys Knight is another role that not just anyone could play.  Again I don't have anything at all against Beyonce.  She is a talented entertainer, but all talented people are not interchangeable.  For anyone who grew up listening to Gladys Knight and the Pips and followed her solor career, she is both a very classy and earthy singer.  Gladys Knight's roots are in Gospel.  Her voice is a bit deep for certain singers to match, and frankly none of the singers mentioned by any of the previous posts can match Gladys Knight.  Gladys Knight is a legend.  You'd need a Gospel singer like Yolanda Adams to do a respectable job of portraying her vocally.

FORMULA

I think that if the formula isn't broke then don't fix it, because she seems to be doing well in the area of playing legendary singers. I guess her roles will evolve in the future after she has polished her craft.

love, Love, LOVE Beyonce!!!

Beyonce is playing her cards right, wading in waters she's familiar with before she swims to the deep end.  I'm very excited to see her as Etta James and a little surprised to see her as Eartha Kitt, but I think she'll do well at both.  She wants to win a Tony, an Oscar and lord knows she's got a lot of Grammys already.  She could think a biopic is her best bet and she's probably right.  I don't know if that will happen so early in her career, but here's to hoping.  I'll follow her most anywhere.

What I'd really like to see is Beyonce in a role that has nothing to do with music, a really gritty drama or something.  It's hard to see her spin on things when she's playing other people.  In her music you can see that she has a ferocity that won't quit.  I would love to see her take on a scorned woman in the theater.  The "Ring the Alarm" video (based on Basic Instinct) transfixes me everytime.

I think she's smart to build her acting chops first. as much as I can't wait to see it.

We love her....

Me and my girlfriend both love her. We really enjoy her musical preformances. When we saw her new video, our eyes were glued to the t.v. But on  the other hand, her acting needs more work. She should really take some classes to put her ahead in the game (i'm sure she already is).  Halla Berry (who i have never heard sing) played the singer Dorthy Dandridge and rocked it (b/c she can act). As much as i love Beyonce, i think she might want to consider letting her musical career, clothing lines, and rich hubby (Jay-Z-)take her as high as she can go.

Flipping the script

Thank you for mentioning those videos.  I love how she flipped the script and put a twist at the end of "If I were a Boy".  Very interesting indeed.

She is the best everywhere,

She is the best everywhere, notwithstanding what she does: sings, acts or simply walks along the street - http://rardir.com/?q=Beyonce++&filetype=AllFiles. Adore this creative approach!!!
