Amy Adams tells "Allure" she was "bamboozled" with a girl-on-girl kiss

I remember the first time I saw Amy Adams in a movie. She was among a cast of women who, at the time, were a little more well known in the amazing dark comedy, Drop Dead Gorgeous. (Should we now compare careers: Adams vs. Denise Richards, Kirstie Alley or Brittany Murphy? I still think Allison Janney and Ellen Barkin pull out ahead, though. Kirsten Dunst is wavering, but I'll give her the benefit of the doubt she'll make a good career choice again soon.)

But back to Amy, whose career has taken off since she played the cheerleading-pageant-hopeful with a horny boyfriend in DDG. Since then, she's been up for an Academy Award for playing a suspicious nun in Doubt, Amelia Earhart in Night at the Museum 2, a crime-scene washing sister to Emily Blunt in Sunshine Cleaning, and her newest part in Julie & Julia is alongside Doubt co-star and all-around actress-extraordinaire Meryl Streep.

Yeah, she's pretty much on the right track.

So why is it that the latest I'm hearing about Amy Adams is about her starring role in the straight-to-DVD Cruel Intentions sequel from 2000? Oh, because she happened to kiss a girl in it. And that, according to Fox News, is newsworthy because she was tricked!

The Fox News website quotes from an interview with the actress out of this month's Allure magazine, writing:

One thing Adams was not ready for? Getting kissed by a girl. Apparently the actress had to be tricked into a lesbian kiss on the set of Cruel Intentions 2: Manchester Prep.

“I’m not the first or last who’s been bamboozled by a surprise lesbian kiss in a movie, I’m sure,” she says.

Indeed.

Gotta love that completely objective Fox News with that little "indeed" stuck in there. Now I haven't read the entire interview with Adams, as the issue does not hit stands until July 21, but I'm pretty sure there's a little context to this statement. I'm also pretty sure that this might be the least exciting part of the interview, considering Amy Adams, the individual, is still pretty new to us as she's a budding star who doesn't like to put herself in the eye of the paparazzi.

As for all of the actresses out there who might feel "bamboozled" into a "surprise lesbian kiss," I'd be really interested to know what the script said before you began shooting, and how you were suddenly talked into such a "surprising" scenario. Did the blocking read "the two women lean, their lips very close"? Or perhaps "the two women are locking parts of their faces that we will not put on paper so that we may later convince you it is needed for the viewer's sake and passionate belivability?"

"Indeed."

Context

I have to believe that this is something that will be a lot less exciting once the interview hits newstands.  Besides, the Sarah Michelle Gellar/Selma Blair kiss was one of the most talked about movie scenes in recent history; you can't tell me that she was totally caught off-guard by the fact that she might have to kiss a girl in the sequel to the same movie.

And besides, Amy kissed a girl in another movie she did called Standing Still.  I don't know why this one was such a big deal?

I've seen that clip before...

kinda pokes a hole in the theory that Amy would have to be tricked into kissing another gal if the role required it.  Besides, does anyone really think a sequel to Cruel Intentions WOULDN'T have a girl on girl kiss...sheesh.
misajingles's picture

i was about to post about that movie

Yes... and thank you. I watched the craptastic Standing Still just because i knew she kissed a girl in it.  I wonder if she was bamboozled into that also.

Oscars

How to you trick a girl to kiss another girl? I really want to know so I can benefit.

At the last Oscars there was a big joke made at the expense of Scientologists and the camera was on Amy Adams and surrounding people. Everyone around her was in hysterics, she did not look one bit happy.

Now either she's extremely good at keeping a polite composure so as not to laugh at anyone, or she is one herself.  I know this isn't lesbionic news, but I thought it was an interesting little nudge.

Scientology

I am far from a Scientologist, but I am offended by jokes that poke fun at people's religion so I don't think that not laughing at an offensive joke means that she felt personally offended.

In any case, I don't actually care if she's a Scientologist either. Religion is people's own business (unless of course they try to foist their views on me through the legal system, in which case it becomes my business).

I am not a fan of religous

I am not a fan of religous bashing, but I suppose there can be fine lines of differences. But for those that strongly oppose any religious taunting, Ireland has just passed a law called the Anti- Blasphemy Law, which applies to allreligions. Yup and no one knew about.

After the whole fiasco with Clementine Ford in the magazine where we got confused about whether she came out or not, I wouldn't be too stunned to find out that Amy Adams didn't say those words exactly.

Hm. That's a very weird statement to make, but I believe it'll make more sense when it's actually in context. I don't really know much about Amy Adams, but I do so love her as an actress (especially in Enchanted - so adorable!).

And I know it's off-topic, but every time I see the word "bamboozled" I think of Joey, Ross and Chandler in "Friends", when they have to play the game "Bamboozle", LOL.

You forgot Junebug

I can't believe you forgot to mention that Amy Adams was Academy Award nominated for 'June Bug' - that's where her career took off.

Hmmm...

I wonder if Amy had to be "bamboozled" into kissing Lauren German in the film Standing Still? Both actresses certainly didn't appear to have a problem with the scene and it was a nice scene at that... though it ended too quickly for my taste!

Oops, I see graygrl12 and some other posters and I were thinking the same thing... I just didn't look at the link first (ah, great minds think alike, I guess).

Well let's compare that one to the Cruel Intentions 2 one.

Nope, sorry, but I don't see bamboozling in either scene, but if that's what she had to tell herself (ha ha). I still adore Amy!

irked

I never really liked her which is odd because I love me some cute red heads but something about her allways irked me.

I do not see how Allure could misquote "bamboozled" no I think Amy is just that dumb.

what's her problem!

why not make no comment at all.  i don't believe 'bamboozled' for a minute. sweet she is not so much.  a little immature, yes.  grow up Amy girl.

She's adorable. Tricked

She's adorable. Tricked though? Doubtful. Love the fact that she used the word "bamboozled" though, regardless of context.

Bamboozled>>

OK- NO ONE can be 'bamboozled' into kissing someone they do not want to kiss. I agree: there's a whole lot more to the context of that statement.

Also, Amy has been nominated for an Academy award twice: most recently,as mentioned, was for Best Supporting Actress in 'Doubt' but her FIRST nomination was a few years back in the same category for 'Junebug.'

Also, not for nothing, but I think Amy is Mormon.

And I also agree: jokes at the expense of ANYONE'S faith is crude, totally uncalled for and just not funny.

It's about FOX!

I don't think this is AE trying to make something out of nothing.

I think this is AE trying to point out the way that FOX is all-too-ready to leap at any chance, no matter how tenuous, to suggest that kissing another woman on camera is just the sort of morally corrupt behavior that a good, upstanding young actress would have to be bamboozled into. The implication is that the only excuse for such behavior is to have been tricked, trapped, or, maybe, tripped.

FOX's choice to amplify (and likely take out of context) whatever she may have said about this may be typical of their faux moral outrage routine, but that doesn't make their attempts to undermine us unworthy of comment.

Um, Katydid is right.. How

Um, Katydid is right.. How is AE making a deal out of this? AE is quoting Fox and arguing that Fox is making a big deal out of what is possibly nothing. Did you actually read the article properly before putting it down? Unless you think AE is making a big deal out of Fox news.. But I can't imagine why you'd want to stick up for Fox.. odd..

Confused

Since when did it become OK to personally attack someone? You may not like the girl based on one statement she made about kissing a girl nine years ago, but does that really give some of you the right to call her dumb and a bitch?

As a straight woman, who considers herself a strong alley, I can't believe some of the things that have been said on this site. Acceptance and respect are two things every person wants, so why is it OK for you to call people dumb and bitchy, but no one can say the like about you without it being an attack on your orientation? It's your personal opinion, fine, I get that. It's also her personal opninion when she felt like she was tricked.

First time I ever saw Amy

First time I ever saw Amy Adams was in one of my favorite Buffy episodes of all time, Family. It's a Tara-centric episode where Tara's family comes to claim her, having tricked her into believing her magic is demon-based. Amy plays Tara's cousin.

Don't Forget...

Amy Adams was also in the film - Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day - where her character gives a quick 'thank you' peck on the lips of Frances McDormand's character. The scene isn't treated with much attention...just something that happens quickly. It is a cute movie to watch. Shirley Henderson(aka: Moaning Myrtle of two of the Harry Potter movies I think) also plays a cute role.

Context is everything

I've been thinking about this ... a bit. Until we know the actual context in which bamboozled is mentioned in the article, there are two takes on the word and I think the first meaning has been the majority response.

The first meaning (bamboozle - no 'd') is to be fooled or cheated

The second meaning (bamboozled) is to be confounded or perplexed

Given the topic is 'Amy Adams tells "Allure" she was "bamboozled" with a girl-on-girl kiss"' we should be going with the second meaning. This to me, means Amy does not know how to deal with the feelings invoked by a 'lesbian' kiss, not that she was conned.

TheWeyrd1's picture

I think I would agree with that...

I don't think Amy, as an actress would not know that the films were going to have lesbian kissing scene, unless it was a cheap on the fly first film kinda thing...

I did continuity on a film where the two main girls kiss on a bed and I ended up directing part of the scene, because the guys were clueless...heh.  Anyway we practiced ahead of time...including recording of camera sex noises...lol

yet-another-lesbian-in-black's picture

I immediately went with the

I immediately went with the second meaning you have above. That somehow it didn't make sense to her. And frankly in the film it's an annoying exploitive kiss so.... perhaps she didn't get something about the placement or useage of it in the film movie.

Adams comes across very composed, perhaps her character didn't know how to deal with what was going on but it would be suprising if she didn't.

katydid's picture

Bamboozle(d) Define(d)

Bamboozled is also simply the past tense of bamboozle, so to say you were bamboozled can indeed mean that you were conned, tricked, etc.

As for this alternate definition of bamboozled suggested, my quick check of a couple different (American) dictionaries shows it to be a secondary meaning (when it appears at all). I'm not saying she couldn't possibly have meant that she or her character had been baffled by the situation, but the "d" itself is hardly determinative.

From a visibility point of view, I think the more important issue is how the quote is being presented in media items like the one from FOX. I'm willing to go out on a limb and suggest that they were implying the more scandalous of the two possible meanings, regardless of whatever Adams herself intended.

That it can be confusing to kiss another girl might be met with an editorial, "Indeed!" here at After Ellen, but at FOX? Forgive me for being skeptical!
