Adele, Alicia Keys and Katy Perry are among Grammy nominees for '08If the Grammy Awards are any reflection of the general population's musical taste, it would appear that we all appreciate women artists, as long as they are country singers, pop stars or paired with a male counterpart. This year's Grammy nominations have been announced, and while women are prevalent, they are also shut out of some key categories. Janelle Monáe's song "Many Moons" is up for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, but her full-length debut Metropolis: The Chase Suite was not nominated for any other awards. The only woman in any rap category, in fact, was Estelle, who collaborated with Kanye West on the track, "American Boy." Otherwise, it's Lil' Wayne's year. (Did they not even give a listen to Yo Majesty?) Janelle Monáe The Ditty Bops' Summer Rains was nominated for Best Album Packaging, and Cynthia Nixon was nominated, along with Beau Bridges and Blair Underwood, for Best Spoken Word Album, as they all participated in Al Gore's recording of An Inconvenient Truth. Unfortunately, that's where the lesbian representation ends. In faux-bisexual land, Lady GaGa was nominated for Best Dance Record and Best Dance Album. She has stiff competition in the latter category, however, as she's up against Cyndi Lauper, Kylie Minogue, Robyn and Brazilian Girls. (My vote is for Robyn.) Lady Gaga Katy Perry received one nod for "I Kissed a Girl" (Best Female Pop Vocal Performance). That's still one too many, if you ask me. Surprisingly, she was not included among her peers Adele, Duffy and Sara Barellies in the Best New Artist or Record of the Year categories. It's great to see that M.I.A. is receiving praise for her song, "Paper Planes." It's up for Record of the Year, and will hopefully win against Adele's "Chasing Pavements," Coldplay's "Viva La Vida," Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" and Robert Plant/Allison Krauss' "Please Read the Letter." Maybe it'll bring her out of retirement, at least after she pops out her baby. M.I.A. Here are a few other nominations: Song Of The Year Adele Best New Artist Duffy Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Katy Perry Best Contemporary R&B Album Mary J. Blige Best Female R&B Vocal Performance Alicia Keys Who do you think should win in February? Submitted by on December 4, 2008 - 12:00pm. |

Huh?
Alicia Keys
So the Emmy people are
So the Emmy people are trying to suggest that I Kissed A Girl wasn't autotuned to within an inch of it's life? You can hear Melodyne on there!
I have to say though, the Brits are representin' this year. :D
www.myspace.com/stopstartstall - acousticy music type stuff.
Im Yours
Jason Mraz
Pink
Hopefully Pink will take her category and send Katy home empty-handed.
"That which you believe becomes your world."
ALICIA KEYS ALL THE WAY
ALICIA KEYS is going to win!!! she is so great but J-Hudd vocals are on point too.
Sara Bareilles!
She's just FANTASTIC! She's a great songwriter, pianist, and vocalist. She just might have it all. Remember that time when you couldn't get "Love Song" out of your head?
STOP KATY PERRY!!!!!!
Who votes for the Grammies?
the picks!
American Boy is Estelle's track, not Kanye's! (as noted in the nominee category....)
hoping Robyn wins, been spinning her album since '06, and it's about time she got some recognition. how many times can you reissue a record, anyway?
great to see adele getting some recognition! honestly, i love MIA, but the radio destroyed Kala for me. Lady GaGa is also fabulous. Oh, and Robert Plant and Allison Krauss - absolutely gorgeous. one of the best albums of the year!

Why not
I wouldn't mind if Katy Perry won, I mean, she does have a great voice :) Aside from that, all the nominations are pretty decent :) I'd like to see P!nk win something though, and Adele, they're both awesome artists.
You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.
okie dokie!
Katy Perry
and 'great voice' can't be in the same sentence ever. She looks great, voice?...not so much.
But yeah, A grammy should go to any one of these artists
'vivalavida' of course:)..'love song'..'superwoman'...'I'm yours'.. and Ne-yo for best R&B album..

I'm like Swayze, you be Baby
katy perry
She deserved more nominations, i kissed a girl was the song of the summer
and no other new artist has been more iconic this year and done so much
she is so nice as well, i saw her live and got her autograph and she was very nice
Grammys
Why are the Jonas Brothers listed as a new artist? Haven't they been around awhile? I remember my niece talking about them over a year ago.
I absolutely love Viva La Vida, but I don't know that it should win with the current lawsuit against Coldplay for plagiarism. Listen to Joe Satriani's If I Could Fly - I can definitely see why he sued Coldplay. Listen to the chorus.
As far as Katy Perry is concerned - I really don't care for any of her songs. It's kind of neat that a song titled 'I Kissed A Girl' is up for best female pop performance, but if it wins then it's not going to do anything good for the gay and lesbian community. [shrugs] I think she exploited the idea and I don't really want to see her win for it. It's like T.A.T.U winning for 'All The Things She Said'.
