Women top the 100 Best Comic Book CoversLast week, Whitney at Pop Candy gave us the heads-up about the countdown of “100 Best Comic Covers” at 1979 Semi-Finalist, aka Kelly Thompson. Kelly admits to including “a high number of badass chick covers, as I am a badass chick.” Judging from her picks, I’m inclined to agree. Here are a few highlights.
98. The Amazing Spider-Man #29 I don’t remember seeing this cover before — and I think I would’ve remembered. The John Romita Jr. drawing of Spidey’s GF Mary Jane beautifully captures the conflict of being in love with a superhero.
63. Wonder Woman #198 This Phil Noto cover makes me think that Wonder Woman somehow got trapped in a Norman Rockwell painting — and boy, is she pissed.
51. Astro City #4 This Alex Ross classic is another of my favorites, although I would rank it in the top 10. The expression on the woman’s face is a story in itself — and the contrast between her and the female superhero is what Astro City is all about.
40. Optic Nerve #2 I hope you read Optic Nerve. Adrian Tomine has a gift — and this was one of his first covers. Anyone who thinks comic books have no depth needs to see this illustration.
30. Love and Rockets #5 Several Jamie Hernandez covers made the Top 100 — this is my favorite. I love this aviatrix — and her rockets.
19. The Spirit #4 Plenty of comic book covers show a man carrying a woman. Flipping that image is reason enough to love this Darwyn Cooke illustration. But the detail is what pushed the cover into the top 25.
1. Batgirl #45 Hmm. I heart James Jean, but I’m surprised that this cover is No. 1. Kelly loves the badass expression on Batgirl’s face, the juxtaposition between Batgirl and the stylized villain and the high heels. OK, I made up that last one. Of course, I can’t choose a No. 1 at all. (Even deciding which covers from Kelly’s list to show here felt like Sophie’s Choice.) How could I ever choose between my two favorite Strangers in Paradise covers?
Or Buffy and Wicked Willow?
And my heart would be broken if I left out Fone Bone in love from Bone #11.
So, I leave it to stronger people to choose the best of the best. What is your favorite comic book cover? What do you think of the selections for the Top 100 at 1979 Semi-Finalist? If you have an image of your No. 1, feel free to post it in the comments. Submitted by on August 10, 2009 - 12:00pm. |

I was totally unaware...

I was hoping that Love and Rockets would make the cut! Every issue of that series is awesome on so many levels. It's so difficult to find a good LGBT-friendly comic that features female characters, let alone Latinas.
I'd really like to see it made into a film someday.

Runaways!!!!!
Love it!
I'm a big fan of Joss Whedon, and the first time I had heard of Runaways was when I was at the bookstore in the graphic novel section and I saw Whedon's name in big gold bold writing on the cover of Runaways: Dead End Kids. I bought it and I love it, but I haven't had a chance to read any of the other ones.

Fone Bone!
I'm reading the Bone series right now and Fone Bone is so cute it hurts.
Also a couple covers from the Y: The Last Man series are lesbo-rific. I'm not a huge comic book reader (but I'm trying) and they're on the top of my list.
Yay!
I quite like ECHO

I like to get several issues in one purchase so I can read them back-to-back :)
Back to SiP: Tambi rocks, and I quite like this cover, too

The more I look at the Buffy
The more I look at the Buffy comics the more I think I should be reading them! I was a massive Buffy fan. Are they worth a read?

You can get the paperbacks pretty cheap these days so no worries there.
This is good!
I really love the SiP nouveau covers from Vol. 3, Issues 51-53.
The Gotham Girls (#1 - 5) covers are my all-time favorite.
I also quite liked the latest Supergirl cover (#43).

Gives me the chills, too. Whenever I see that cover I always think of her saying, "Bored now." just before she obliterates Warren.

Pree-1990s Comics
Just to prove you can find older comics with powerful women on the cover, here's issue #11 of Howard Chaykin's brilliant early-1980s comic AMERICAN FLAGG! - which was way ahead of its time.
.
Cool
American Flagg!
It's actually been collected recently in a couple of TPBs, so the stories are available. Here's a cover gallery of the original comics. I almost posted the cover for #22 here but settled on the more sedate #11 instead:

Great thread.
Great thread. Purgatori?Wonder Woman/Hack Slash are my favorites.
I saw a cover which had two schoolgirls making out, I forgot the name of it though.
Thanks for linking - and a correction!
Hey
Thanks for linking - of all the sites, blogs, forums, etc., that have picked up these posts you guys are definitely the nicest and least critical - I'm going to have to hang out here more often.
I did want to make a correction though - that first cover - the Amazing Spider-Man #29 with MJ on the cover? It's by John Romita Jr., not Lee Weeks. There was some conflicting info about it on the web and since I don't own that issue I wasn't able to confirm, but I got confirmation today and it's Romita Jr. If you're able to correct your post great - if not, I guess we'll let this stand as the correction. Apologies to Mr. Romita Jr. and Mr. Weeks for the confusion - and to you Linster for the inconvenience.
Thanks again for linking - and reading!
Best,
Kelly
Corrected!
Wormwood!
I love this list. Here's one from Wormwood that I like.
You ladies are representing
You ladies are representing Buffy and Runaways admirably, so I have to speak up for the women of Fables.
Fables #8: Rose Red as the boss of The Farm, and what a cute boss she is.
Fables #71: Cinderella is the most badass woman in Fables!
Damn
