The "Witchblade" movie: Who’s sharp enough to play Sara?Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me a dozen times, shame on you, again — especially if you’re a production company that has sucked me in time after time with the promise of a great, comic-based female action hero movie or TV series. Case in point: Elektra.
Jennifer Garner as Elektra, for all her tight, skimpy outfits, awesome abs and ass-kicking goodness, was not the Elektra of comic books. She was more like Elektra on Xanax. Sure, I watch the movie every time it’s on, but I’m superficial that way. Catwoman was even worse — so bad that I haven’t watched it more than once, despite the presence of Halle Berry in this outfit.
But now comes an announcement that I want to be excited about: a live-action version of Witchblade is coming to the big screen. Do I dare to hope again? Witchblade is a familiar story: In each generation, a female is chosen to receive special powers to slay, er, fight evil. In this case, the power comes via the Witchblade, a conscious weapon that looks like a jeweled gauntlet when not in use. If the right person wields it, the Witchblade heightens the wearer’s senses and transforms into whatever it needs to be to protect her. If the wrong person tries to wield it, she loses her arm — harsh. The current Witchy woman is Sara Pezzini, a NYPD homicide detective. Even if you’re not a comic fan, you probably remember Witchblade from the TNT series starring Yancy Butler as Sara. (This shot is the cover of the series DVD, coming July 29.)
Opinions about the series were mixed among Witchblade comic fans. I liked it personally, but I didn’t read the comic book until I watched the show, so I’m not speaking as a true 'blade geek. In any case, the show got decent ratings but was canceled after two seasons, probably due to Butler’s too frequent (and not too effective) visits to rehab. We don’t know much about the upcoming movie yet, except that it starts shooting this fall in Australia. Top Cow, publisher of the comic, is involved in production, so I assume the story will mirror the comic book. I am of two minds about that possibility: A devil on one shoulder reminds me that in the comic, when the Witchblade activates, it shreds Sara’s clothes in the process, leaving a lot less than the full-body armor depicted in the television version. How can I not want to see a movie featuring a scantily clad, butt-kicking female? In my other ear, an angel whispers about the comic book’s rich mythology. Past wielders of the Witchblade include Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Boudica, Elizabeth Brontë and Marie Curie. Imagine a film that introduces the mythology and segues into a new TV series, Tales of the Witchblade, with a different beautiful and fascinating heroine every week. Call me, Top Cow; we’ll talk. Until the producers tell us more, we are left with the difficult task of speculating on who should play Sara. We already know finalgirl’s pick.
But in case Rachel McAdams has other plans, we have to be ready. Megan Fox would certainly be worthy of Witchblade transformation.
And we know that Sarah Shahi has special powers — and looks very nice with very little clothing (you’re an idiot, Shane). She also knows how to play a cop.
However, one name came to mind and just won’t leave — not that I want it to. Our own “Ladycop,” Christina Cox: hot, buff and tough. You can see it, too, can’t you?
No, then who? Who is your chosen bearer of the Witchblade? And am I a fool to hope that, at last, a good female action hero movie is on the horizon? Submitted by on May 14, 2008 - 3:00pm. |

Yancy Butler / Christina Cox
I concur!
And that's all I'm going to say on this ;)

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
Have to agree
I didn't even know who Yancy Butler was until Witchblade and now I can't imagine another actor stepping into that role. It'll be interesting to see who they come up with. The more I see of Rachel McAdams the more I believe she can do anything.
It might be nice if they choose a completely beyond hot unknown actress.
Yancy butler
Christina Cox/Jill Wagner
Megan Fox is just too young for the part.
Christina and Jill both have the badass-ness the physic and experience to do the part right.

Witchblade
The TV series was a big favourite of mine - particularly the first series. Yancy Butler was brilliant as Sara, and such a shame she couldn't kick her addiction. I'm pleased the show is finally coming to DVD as my VHS tapes are long gone!
As for the new series, you can bet it will be some young thing you've never heard of with big hair and big boobs who will be about 23.
Yay!
Christina Cox! Ultimate badass-ness! I'm glad lots of people agree :)
They've got to be crazy to NOT keep the clothes shredding. I've got to read up on Witchblade now...
It would be nice
It would be nice to see Yancy Butler back as Sara Pezzini, but I think Christina Cox could fit nicely into the role. Some other candidates that I can think of would be Liz Vassey (the other Ladycop) and Rose Rollins (plays a convincing badarse in Girltrash). Anyways, I am thrilled the DVD for the TV series is being released soon. Yum.
witchblade
ahh...
yea...Miss Bennett would be kick ass...or Christina

Catwoman sucked soooo bad...omg. I want to love a film that is based on a female comic book character but they never make a script that is good, or even semi-good.
My fingers crossed they finally do wonder woman...I really feel that is the only character that will be a blockbuster hit.

Please - please - please, let's not take the stunning wonder of what was Witchblade and put it in the hands of Jennifer Garner. While I agree that she does have talent, there is no way in the world she could do what Yancy Butler did for Sara Pezzinni...
Of all the ladies on the list Christina Cox is the only one who could even begin to wield the gauntlet...she has the acting chops and the stunts and fight scenes would be easy for her - but most importantly she can pull of that brooding-affected-traumatized-butch thing that Pez is...
Rachel McAdams could likely do a decent job too but somehow I don't think she could be gritty enough. After all Witchblade is not one of the high gloss comics its more Frank Miller than Marvel.
But in the end Witchblade was Yancy Butler's triumph...after years of slogging through ditzy and invisible roles she owned this one...which is why I don't think this movie should be made without her...even if only to pass along the Witchblade to a new wielder - enter Ms. Cox!!
They Shouldn't Do It
Yancy Butler did an awesome job at playing Sara. I loved Witchblade, and I've been waiting for it to come to DVD. I'm gonna get it the day it comes out.
Honestly, they should not remake it again. I don't care who's supposed to play Sara this time around, it just shouldn't happen.
But, if they're gonna do it, I would vote for Christina Cox. She's amazing, and I think she would fit the role.

Christina Cox - oh yeah!!
Christina Cox - oh yeah!! I'm sick of bad comic adaptations, I mean, even Spiderman 3 sucked (and it had venom in it! VENOM! How can you possibly go wrong with that?!), but strangely enough, I watch every single one in hopes of it actually being good. But if they do Witchblade with Christina Cox? I'm definitely there.... she is hotness incarnated.

Casting
I loved the original with Yancy. My my, those eyes!
Of all you mentioned, Christina Cox is my fave. Perhaps they will do a search for an unknown? I bet Jillie B could totally do a superheroine.
blade o' witches
I was inexplicably excited about Witchblade when it was on TV and i was devasted when the show was cancelled. Of course, i'd like to think the fact that i was in either junior high or high school serves as an excuse for any excessive enthusiasm.
At any rate, i was pretty "ho-hum" about suggestions until Sarah Shahi came up. I think my eyes nearly bugged out of my head just thinking about it. But as insanely sexy as that would be, i just can't picture her doing superheroine flicks. She's got enough badass attitude to pull it off though, and i'm not sure who else i'd pick for the role.
I miss Yancy!
Like so many others, Yancy Butler will always be Sara Pezzini to me because she was my first exposure to the character and -hello- she both kicked ass and stole my heart. She just seemed to perfectly embody the character's strength, vulnerability and righteous attitude while looking amazing on a bike.
But of any young up-and-comers out there, I'd like to see Vanessa Ferlito who was in Quentin Tarrantino's Death Proof from Grindhouse. She is the character, when Kurt Russell's character asks whether she is afraid of him, says yes, then when he asks whether it's his scar she responds "It's your car." According to IMDB, she is a regular on CSI: New York, which I don't watch. She's half Italian, from New York and would also be welcome to my heart.

I concur. Here's another name: Vera Farmiga!
I love the witchblade
I'm surprised to see so
I'm surprised to see so many Yancy-Sara fans... For me she couldn't have been less of a Sara if she tried.
I'd vote Shahi, on likeness at least, she's got it. But I agree with katie that I'm yet to see an actress that can embody Sara.
Which makes me wonder how would an animation play out instead of live action. Ever since I started reading Witchblade I thought it'd translate great into screen, and having both flavors of format to see Sara kick ass... too good to be true.

I am soooo excited that the dvds are coming out, on my birthday no less. :)
For me, I would love Yancy Butler to reprise the role. IMDb puts her last roles last year doing the soap As The World Turns as Ava Jenkins. I don't watch it so have no idea about the role, and she's got one film (looks like a B level flick) due out this year. Perhaps an offer could be made. :)
Christina Cox is a good second, though I'm still waiting on a renewal notice for Blood Ties which is still likely. It's not been ruled out.

More Love for Yancy and WTF re: CatWoman
I want to add my voice to the Yancy Butler love fest. She is hot hot HOT! I have pre-ordered the DVD and was likewise devastated when it was cancelled. I would love it if Yancy returned to the role however that is certainly not going to happen. As for the Anime - I thought it was pretty bad -too much silicon and not enough character depth ... The comic is brilliant which is why it is so hard to translate it well to the screen. Of the women listed only Christina Cox could even come close to pulling off so complex a character convincingly. I would LOVE to see her in that role! Regarding the Hate - On almost everyone seems to have for Cat Woman I'm going to state for the record I liked that movie, No, it was not brilliant or life-altering but it certainly wasn't nausea inducing (like Ultraviolet! -which I had to turn off) Also Ummm that purple outfit??? When precisely did Halle wear that in the movie??? - I think Catwoman was slammed by the (mostly male)critics b/c instead of a "happy Hollywood" ending She goes off Without the Cute Guy to forge a life of HER OWN MAKING. For me the best part of the movie was the statement at the end - that there is no place in "his World" for a woman like her. Our society is still very hostile to truly free-thinking - truly independant women, so in that sense that movie was spot on! I also loved it's portrayal of the "beauty" industry and how Sharon Stone was the extreme embodiment of the psychosis brought on by our obssession with youth - surface beauty with out depth or experience - something that I have never understood - Give me an experienced self assured Woman over a pubescent Girl anyday!

but how about lovely smart cathy debuono ? those arms...
Christina Cox!!!
Christina Cox?! WTF!!!!!
Are you blind????
I've shown up to this discussion a tad late but couldn't resist posting after reading the first things out of Sicksteen's mouth..."She's ugly!!!!" ????? That statement is what really deserves a WTF, my dear.
Christina Cox, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful women to ever walk the planet. She has strong features (as well as a strong body) that make her unique and totally tasty. Come on! How do you not get weak in the knees from that little dent in her chin?? *sigh* Her smile, those beautiful eyes....geez!!!
I think Christina is a total package - she's got the beauty, the acting talent and the fighting skills to pull off any action role - Sara Pezzini included.
Ready to Scream or Cry.....
I fell asleep watching WB's Witchblade series. Yancy Butler?! What the H were they thinking? It sucked so bad I couldn't get through the first 3 episodes! Every time Yancy talked I thought she was going to cough a lung up. Her voice is like nails down a chalkboard to me. The story line was boxy and predictable to the point that I wanted to gouge my eyes out.The witchblade was like a piece of the tin man's arm. Sorry I'm an avid fan of witchblade and I got the impression the witchblade was a breathing living thing and much more fluidity involved in it's application.
None of the suggestions have much appeal to me. They may look grest practically naked but lack in acting experience. I can't believe no one's offered up Jessica Alba! True she may not fit the description perfectly but she has the attitude, the body and the experience to pull it of. Plus her voice is much sexier. SHe was awsome in the first season of Dark Angel. Not sure what happened in the second, I think the writers got their meds altered. I hope they don't follow in the footsteps of the WB. If they do it's destined to be a big disappointment.
