Where’s the magic in ABC's "Eastwick"?

Imagine a show about three gorgeous women who discover they are witches.

No, not that show. I’m talking about Eastwick, ABC’s new show based on the John Updike book and movie of the same name, The Witches of Eastwick.

I admit that I tend to watch any show about witchy women, probably because I wish I had magic powers. But early reviews of Eastwick have not been kind. And if the lack of chemistry and stiff acting in this clip is representative of the series, I can see why.

Being a normal lesbian woman, I believe that any show starring Rebecca Romijn (Roxie), Lindsay Price (Joanna) and Jamie Ray Newman (Kat) deserves a chance to succeed, purely in terms of female watchability.

But personally, I’m not up for a Desperate Housewives or Lipstick Jungle clone. Nor am I thrilled about the prospect of watching yet another show in which women sit around the kitchen table discussing penis size and submit themselves to an “enigmatic stranger,” especially one as arrogant and unlikable as Darryl Van Horne (Paul Gross, who was wonderful in Due South).

Granted, if Roxie, Joanna and Kat spend a lot of time dancing around in that fountain, I’ll probably make room for Eastwick on my DVR.

But I need a little more than what I’ve seen so far before I’ll commit.

What do you think of Eastwick so far? Will you give the show a chance?

    i didn't think this was a good idea when i first heard of it. i loved the movie but i don't think the show could do any better or at least as good as the movie.

    Oh Linster....if you were going to have a Charmed pic on there, how could you have left out Pru?  I cried when she left the show.

    As for Eastwick?  How do you follow Cher, Michele Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon?

    I don't have hopes for that.  How many cherries can the townspeople cough up anyway in a series?

    I know. I boxed myself in to 3 women with the lede. It was a struggle, but the better image won out. Oh the Sophie's choices we have to make here!

    Yeah maybe my standards are low, but you had me at beautiful women and magic.  I always loved the film and wanted them to make a show out of it.  I just hope the first season isn't like the movie but longer- I imagined a show taking off after the movie with the women fighting off Daryl's attempts to get to their sons with him, the scandals of being three women in some sort of innapropriately close relationship in a big mansion, careers, dating non-demonic people etc.  I wonder, since these women are not the ones from the movie if this is supposed to be Van Horne's second attempt on Eastwick women- like these three will also uncover a legacy of numerous Eastwick three-somes- think the premise of Catwoman the (aweful) movie here.

     

    Anyways, I'll watch it till it's canceled for sure.

    I'm all for the female characters with magical powers, but three witches who need to summon a man to solve all their problems?

     I think I'll pass.  

    Granted I haven't seen the original, so maybe I'm wrong, but that's what the preview looked like to me.  No thanks.

    It looks like a really lame version of Charmed. And I already thought Charmed was kind of lame.

    This may be a little late given the posting, but I'm trying to keep an open mind. I loved the original, although it always irked me that they derived their power from Darryl. This time around, however, having seen the pilot, (maybe it's just me projecting, but...) I thought they made a distinct decision to make the powers inherent. The premonitions and other clues seemed to make the powers or the onset of them exist before Darryl came on board, and that he may have increased them, but only through increased self-awareness (which yes is problematic but still attributes the powers to the women inherently). At least that's what I would like to think...

    I noticed that there is nothing about the lesbian story line in it, or sorta lesbian storyline in it, with Joanna and her best friend. I just get this like gilmore girls feeling mixed with charmed (minus the demons and what not) from this show but i still watch it, maybe its cause when i am bored i watch shows on abc.com.
