"Weeds" returns for a fourth season this summer

The grass is always greener on the other side of California. At least, that's what Nancy Botwin is hoping in Season 4 of Weeds. (Fair warning: spoilers ahead.) If you're still catching up on Season 3, just move along, folks: nothing to see here – except Mary Louise Parker, of course.

Still with us? OK, first, I feel the need to get a little Season 3 hangover out of the way. In an apparent effort to prove that they have first-hand experience with their subject matter, Showtime producers have entered Mary-Kate Olsen in the Emmy Award race for best guest actress. Olsen played Tara, Silas' Bible-thumping, pot-inhaling girlfriend. Interesting stunt casting, sure. Emmy worthy? Well, you decide.

Whatever your opinion of the performance, Mary-Kate's role apparently went up with smoke along with Weeds' fictional setting, Agrestic. The Botwins have high-tailed it to Ren Mar, a beach community near the San Diego/Mexico border. Unfortunately, two of the show's more interesting regulars, Conrad (Romany Malco) and Heylia (Tonye Patano), didn't make the move. (Although a late-breaking rumor has it that they may show up from time to time.)

That’s sad news, as far as I’m concerned. I will especially miss Heylia, whose diva dealer attitude was a nice foil for Nancy. But the changing of the ganja guard is in keeping with a new direction in the story line for Season 4 – and a necessary one at that, since Nancy no longer is a naïve widow forced to sell pot to pay the bills. “What began in the original pilot as a suburban housewife who was making ends meet by dealing dime bags has turned into the story of a woman who is a drug dealer,” executive producer Roberto Benabib told the New York Post. “As she’s changed, the show has changed.”

In fact, Nancy chose a home close to the Mexican border to, well, grow her business.

Fortunately for us, Celia Hodes (Elizabeth Perkins) apparently has followed the Botwins south and remains a leafy green thorn in Nancy’s side.

Perkins told the National Ledger that she’s relieved to be back, given the way Season 3 of Weeds ended, but she’s not sure where the plot is going. What she does know is that her character is in trouble. “Celia is in hot water because everybody’s pointing the finger at her because her house is where the pot was.” Hopefully, more Celia means more Isabel (Allie Grant), whose lesbian-leaning sexual orientation is a constant irritation to her mom and a constant source of humor for us.

Other good news comes in the form of several cast additions. Albert Brooks, one of my all-time favorite comedians, will play Nancy’s father-in-law, Len. And, according to TV Guide’s Ausiello Report, the gorgeous Julie Bowen is on board as a single mom who will play cougar to Nancy’s son, Silas (Hunter Parrish). MILF-weed? Yes, indeed.

Between now and the Weeds season premiere on June 16, let’s keep our fingers crossed that we’ll see some smoking hot promo pictures like Dorothy Snarker shared with us last year. Meanwhile, you can pick up the Season 3 DVD and soundtrack on June 3.

Are you ready for Season 4 of Weeds? What do you think of the changes? Are you still hooked on Mary-Louise Parker?

    So looking forward to season

So looking forward to season 4!!  Mary Lou is my biggest crush at the moment (which has resulted in a lot of Weeds and a lot of Fried green Tomatoes watching)!  Can't wait to see where the show is going to go from the season 3 finale! Love you Mary-Lou!!

    I gotta say, I lost

I gotta say, I lost interest when she changed from the widow trying to make ends meet, into the full-blown dealer.

I don't have a problem with anyone smoking some weed now and then, but when they start teaching their kids to deal, lie, cheat ... it ain't fun for me anymore.

    It's just t.v.

Lighten up tease! Don't bother being judgemental of fictitious characters.  You are missing out on great writing.  Join the fun.

Weeds is one of the best written shows ever!

    :-)

    In defense of tease...

I saw Weeds on it's first season, and I really liked the show. I haven't watched since first season, so this opinion is only based off of this site, the people who have posted, and the kids I work with in treatment.

Yes, this is a fictitious show, but it is also a show that sends a certain message to viewers. I can't tell you how many of my kids at work ask if I've "watched Weeds" and had a good laugh about it. Is the show funny? Yes. Is the show "lightening up" the reality of drug dealing and parental exposure of drug culture to their children? Definitely.

While I'm all for freedom of speech and artistic expression, I'm not so much for taking what this show is teaching us lightly. Very few young people who do watch this show have the maturity to process it's fictitiousness. Unfortunately, those who are using, or have the prediliction for using are the ones least able to process information like this appropriately and most likely do not have parental figures who mediate viewing practices. I'm not just talking sixteen to eighteen year olds, I deal with children as young as ten with substance abuse disorders.

    If there's anything I have a problem with it's

one person telling another to "lighten up" when she gives her opinion.  If tease has issues, she should be free to express them with others telling her she's wrong.

    no harm intended

but when a person says it's okay for a widow to make ends meet selling weed but then will judge beyond that point... it sounds hypocritical and not exactly a strong statement as a result.  So, I just thought tease might enjoy opening herself up to some good t.v.

no harm intended gals... lighten up.

    Can't Wait

I'm really looking forward to season 4.  I thought season 3 was amazing and I hope they continue the trend into the new season.  I'm actually glad Conrad isn't returning as a regular but I will miss Heylia.

I'm hope they don't skip over anything, you know, like start the season with those dreaded "2 months later" logos.  I really want them to get deep into the fact that Celia snitched on Nancy.

    I cannot wait!!

I fell in love with this show the first time I saw it! What ever changes they make I'm sure it'll still work!

Any chance of getting the Vlog with Emma & Jen back for the recaps?

    yay!

Cant wait for the new season, I've loved Weeds since the very first episode, really sad to see Hayliah's not moving though! I love that Celia follows her, it seems a bit weird, but why the hell not! yay for Julie Bowen too, I had just started to really like Denise on Boston Legal when they kicked her off (she had to compete with Rhona Mitra for my attention during season one and that is one battle no one will ever win!)

    I Miss U-Turn

I thought the third season of Weeds was terrible, so I was looking forward to seeing if the fourth season could right the ship, but....no Heylia or Conrad?

This is not starting off well.

    Eat a Cookie

Ugh! Talk about crapcasting!. The Olsen twin impressed not at all--on par with a guest appearance by Paris Hilton.

Will miss the terrific characters Haylia and Conrad but thank the gods that Celia Hodes will return-- Elizabeth Perkins should be nominated for an Emmy rather than the Olsen thin mint...

    " I love Shane "

Love the t-shirt ^^ Is it the L Word's Shane? Or the Botwin kid?

Anyway, I can't wait for season 4, I loooooooooooove this show

    thelinster's picture

    It's L Word Shane

If you follow the link in the sentence about Isabel, you'll see in the video that she mentions the L Word. It's a funny segment – watch if you have a few minutes.

I love Conrad so that's kind of upsetting but I guess I'm just glad the show will be back soon!

And to answer sweetdebie's question...her shirt is the L Word's Shane.

I've only season 1 and some

I've only season 1 and some of season 2 so I'm quite curious about where this whole thing leads. I'll admit the reason I keep watching though is I love Mary Louise Parker and Elizabeth perkins is awesome so I'm glad she's still around.

In real life I wouldn't have anything to do with

a Nancy or a Ceclia...however, in make believe I love watching the scrapes they get themselves into.  Add the fact that Ceclia is hotter then hot, and the most fun character I love to hate, and I can't wait for the next season.  I just hope the funny looking kid with the scary bug eyes went to live with a relative -- the kid creeps me out.

    Love Heylia

even though she's probably a big homophobe.  Nancy, Celia and Isabel are a blast to watch, too, and I can't wait to see them in season 4.  Plus, it's like pot pornography watching all the fabulous weed they have on the show.  Also, got my undies in a bundle for the next season of Big Love.  If only one of them would come out as a Lesbian.  abbie

    heylia's homophobia

I never thought of it that way, but I bet you're right! Love the character and actress though.

And Pot Porn is also spot-on!

    Good news!

I just watched all the seasons in about two and a half sittings six months ago. Hopefully Conrad and Heylia make it back into the show!

    I just loooooove

Weeds. OMG Nancy (MLP) is such a ...... MILF! She is so hot, the script is superb and I loved all three seasons. Too bad Heylia and Conrad will not appear only sporadically. 'Cause Nancy and Conrad had such great chemistry and Heylia was always a good match for Nancy. I can't wait for the 4th season!

    TBreen's picture

    oh yeah!

I am sooo glad they greenlit this series for another season! Thanks for the low-down Linster!

    Whether she's just trying to

Whether she's just trying to make ends meet or she's a full on drug dealer with her own empire, I still love this show. The characters are great (okay, okay, mostly... I am not forgetting the Olsen twin) and the story lines are fabulous. This show is what television should be. The writing is some of the greatest around, and the chemistry between actors is unbelieveable. But no Helyia and Conrad? I am devastated. But I will still be glued to the screen.
