Pokey Chatman to Russia, with love for coaching intactI grew up believing that Russia was a huge, red monster. Of course, I also believed that I'd survive "the bomb" by crouching under my school desk with my hands clasped over my head. Still, I have a hard time thinking of moving to Moscow as a fresh start. But that's exactly what it is for Pokey Chatman.
Chatman, who resigned as head coach of Louisiana State University earlier this year under a cloud of sexual innuendo, has accepted an associate head-coaching position with Spartak Moscow Region professional basketball team. This is no Russian exile. Last year, WNBA stars Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Tina Thompson and Lauren Jackson played for Spartak during the off-season, and Spartak won the 2007 EuroLeague Women championship.
Spartak owner Shabtai von Kalmanovic is known for his generosity with players. How generous? Bird and Taurasi lived in a rent-free, six-bedroom villa with an indoor pool and sauna. They had a cook, an interpreter, a driver and plane tickets between Moscow and the United States. Plus salaries around $400,000 for the six-month season. Chatman's perks are similar, with a salary rumored to be $500,000. Needless to say, she's excited about it. "It is a great opportunity because [of] how it positively affects every other aspect and the momentum it builds," Chatman said. "It doesn't take away what I want to do with the basketball camps or my consulting. I can still do all of that and coach basketball at the highest level with the No. 1 team in the world. The pieces all fit." Chatman recently spoke about her abrupt departure from LSU for the first time since she left. Her story is much different from what we heard from LSU officials. Most striking is that not a single LSU authority discussed the situation with her. Chatman's associate coach — and subordinate — Bob Starkey delivered the message that she needed to step aside. This, after a 20-year career at LSU.
Although Chatman hasn't addressed the allegations that she had sexual relationships with players, she doesn't have to worry about whether any rumors will affect her job. Her new boss, von Kalmanovic, has been accused of everything from trafficking in African diamonds to being a KGB spy. After a tough year, things for Pokey Chatman are looking up. I, for one, am glad. Show me the money!
This is a great opportunity for her to pocket some serious cash and she will also have a great time on the European circuit. Chance of a lifetime. I know it was hard for her to leave LSU, but maybe this will help heal the wounds. I don't believe for one minute that she had sexual relations with "players", as in plural, as has been implied. If she had them with "one", or none, whose business is it. Unethical? Maybe, but perhaps she was in love with someone, or maybe it didn't happen at all. It's not like it was a coerced relationship, since I don't hear the alleged player speaking out. They're adults. I think she's a person of great integrity and if she did so, she didn't do it lightly. You know how we ladies are when we get bit by the love bug. At least we're not lecherous old men. We tend to engage for very different reasons, largely emotional.
Peace out! Pokey to Russia with love, go for it! and send me a Tshirt!
I've Got Mixed Feelings
I can't deny that I've got mixed feelings about this.
Ultimately, I'm happy for Coach Chatman--the job she's landed in Russia is about as close to NBA level as a woman can get (considering money, talent, fame, etc.), so this step is huge. That said, this whole situation still bothers me and a part of me wishes that she'd stuck around and fought back...not just because, as a fan of the game, I want to know what really happened, but because the broader implications this issue has in terms of race, gender and sexuality.
For more info about the team Chatman's joining, I recommend this ESPN story from a few months ago: Rolling in Rubbles.

gossip
Some gossips /“not important information” : his (Shabtai von Kalmanovic's) ex-wife Anastasia von Kalmanovich left him for woman - Russian rock singer Zemfira (she played basketball too - and did it pretty well - she even was captain of the national team) . All three denied or ignored questions. Well everyone still believes in this story.
She was her producer and then they separated - they insisted “just professionally”. But his relationships with Zemfira still are good.

A good solution
This is probably the best place for her right now. If she did what she was accused of, she can't be involved in college basketball for a while. As a college coach, you just can't get romantically involved with your own players. The power dynamic is too big of an issue. I don't have a problem with a 36-year-old sleeping with a 20-year-old (or whatever the scenario supposedly was), but if the 36-year-old holds the key to the 20-year-old's college education, her playing time, etc., then it's completely unacceptable.
Regardless of how poorly her departure was handled -- and it was handled as poorly as it possibly could have been -- she had to go. But it shouldn't stop her from coaching professionally. And Russia is indeed a great place to make good money. Plus, coaching that team will give her tremendous experience leading world-class players. It's a great opportunity for her.
(I realize I'm not adressing the issue of, "Yeah, but what if she didn't do it?" I'm not addressing it because Pokey isn't. She's never publicly said that she's being falsely accused. Which I think is a huge mistake, unless she isn't being falsely accused. Would you sign a resignation letter over something you absolutely did not do? I sure as hell wouldn't.)
Time to grow.
I'm happy for Pokey Chapman. I sincerely hope that she focuses on seperating her career life from her personal life. We'll never know what actually took place and frankly I don't want to know. I do know that small things can be blown into huge things and really, after so many years in the game, you either know better or just don't give a damn. I'd like to believe that possibly her actions if having an opportunity to re-think them would have produced a different out come.
I've witnessed the media for the majority of my life crucify people without regard and women have it the worse. She's managed to keep moving and that is what makes her a survivor and possibly a good coach. I wish her wisdom above finance first.

On To Better Times
I wish her nothing but the best. I am sure she was really hurt and not too happy about the way her name was spread all over the internet, newspapers and tv without any proof of truth. Pokey is a classy lady and I am sure she will release more details in her own time. I really believe she was setup. I read on another site that this incident took place over 15 years ago while she was an assistant coach and that it was supposedly handled at that time(don't know if it is true or not but the poster was from LSU). If this is true and it was addressed, then the incident was used years later to get rid of her. She might have made a mistake that came back to haunt her when it was convenient for LSU.
I am glad she is getting this opportunity in Russia and I also believe she will get another coaching job at a Div I school in the states sooner than a lot of people think. In fact she stated that she was offered a position at such a school in May 07. Pokey is a damm good coach who loves the game and athletic directors are all about winning. She a proven winner and after some time passes I believe she will be back on the scene IF she so desires.
