TV’s “most underrated actresses” rate high with usIf AfterEllen.com knows anything, it’s actresses. So when erstwhile AfterEllen.com blogger carolinagrrrl, who now collects embarrassing stories for dude TMI! (and occasionally attends class at law school), tipped us off to EW’s latest list, “16 Wildly Underrated Actresses,” I wasn’t surprised that they’re all quite highly rated by us. As usual, the list could use more diversity (the selections were EW readers, not the editors), but all of the choices are good ones. Here are some highlights:
Alyson Hannigan, How I Met Your Mother Yes, she’s underrated. And yes, we know it’s ridiculous. Alyson was a revelation as Willow, but when I watch HIMYM, all I see is Lily. It’s an acting miracle. Remember when Elisabeth Moss was Zoe Bartlett on West Wing? Or when January Jones was Ashton Kutcher’s girlfriend? Or when Christina Hendricks was flat-chested? OK, I made up that last one, but you get the, um, point.
Katee Sackhoff, Battlestar Galactica Face it, Starbuck would not have been as, well, Starbucky without Katee. And if you need convincing that she is indeed underrated, consider this: Nip/Tuck recast her character Dr. Rowe with Rose McGowan and apparently thought no one would notice. Wrong.
Brooke Smith, Grey’s Anatomy Sigh. As much as I love Calzona, I will never forgive Grey’s for summarily dismissing Brooke without explanation. The reader who nominated Smith said that Sara Ramirez deserves a spot on this list, too. Agreed.
Maura Tierney, ER I can’t imagine ER without Abby. And much like Abby, Maura provided consistently brilliant, intense and often raw performances without ever winning an Emmy. Take care of yourself during breast cancer treatment, friend, so you can show us your acting magic again soon.
Yunjim Kim, Lost Kim has long been recognized in Asia, but her stellar Lost performance has been thus far unrewarded at awards festivals. My love for Lost waxes and wanes, but my love for Sun never fails.
Sarah Shahi, Life
Oddly, Sarah is listed in the publicity about the list, but is not in the EW gallery. Weird. Not that it stops us from knowing a Another odd thing about EW’s list is the lack of African American actresses, especially given the possibilities. Chandra Wilson, Wanda Sykes, Vanessa Williams, Pam Grier — I could go on and on. But that’s your job. So, check out the “official” list and tell us what you think. Who makes your list of underrated TV actresses? Submitted by on October 21, 2009 - 4:00pm. |

I'm surprised Lisa Edelstein
Me too! I was so sad she
I know!!! She has done some
Aaaah Starbuck
I love Katee Sackhoff, Alysan Hannagain, Brooke Smith and Maura Tierney, and when I go on about any of them, the only one my friends have heard of is Alyson (yes we are indeed on first name basis) thanks to Buffy in part, but mostly American Pie (a film I hate on the prinicple of being a flute player)...and there are so many other underated actresses out there it's sad...although it being late and my being useless I can't think of any others right now :S sorry!
Good article btw
Joining the Starbuck love
Yesss.
Brooke Smith. For the WIN.
אני קורא, אז אני פשוט צריך לשמוע אותך
What exactly is underrated about Pam Grier?
I've never been impressed.
I've never even been indifferent.
Mostly, I've just been irritated by her acting.
But if we're talking underrated and overlooked, I'd nominate the women of "Big Love." Every single one of them.
YES
yes yes yes. to all.
yes.
Gotta agree
about Pam Grier. I just don't get the "wow" factor.

um, yeah
m'kay. Guess I should limit my "wow factor" comment to acting.
After all, there is no other Foxy Brown except Ms. Grier.

list includes...
Mia Kirshner, Sheetal Sheth, Marylynn Rajskub, Elizabeth Mitchell, Chandra Wilson
how do they define "rated"?
All of those actresses deserve recognition, for sure. Actually, I think Chandra Wilson might not have made the list because she has actually gotten noticed for her work - hasn't she been nominated for an Emmy at least a couple times? Same with Wanda Sykes - everywhere I look lately she's there. (not complaining, in case that's unclear!)
I don't really keep good track of how the mainstream media/awards are "recognizing" people, so I don't know who is missing out. But I would put much of the "supporting" cast of Grey's there just because they still seem to be supporting when they definitely deserve to be leads - Sara Ramirez, Sandra Oh, and Chandra Wilson for sure.
On the comedy side, both of the women in How I Met Your Mother are great. Alyson Hannigan of course, but Cobie Smulders too and she seems to be even less well known. I've also been watching the next show, Accidentally on Purpose, with Jenna Elfman, who is pretty much a comic genius. The rest of the cast and the writing are not the greatest, but she is awesome. I remember her being great in Dharma and Greg too.
Good list. Any execs reading this??
maura tierney
same here
Four More
I agree with the person who suggested Summer Glau on the EW list. That one episode of Terminator where she visits the library every night was stunning. Also, I know not many people watched In Treatment the first season, but Mia Wasikowska, who played the young gymnast, was exquisite. And newly underrated is Lea Michele of Glee. She was on Letterman a few weeks ago and he had no idea how amazing she is. And then there's Lauren Graham. Until she wins an Emmy, she will be underrated in my book.
I totally agree with you on
I totally agree with you on Lea Michele and Lauren Graham

I agree the most with the
I agree the most with the Chandra Wilson comment. That woman's talent is outstanding. She doesn't get enough praise.
Ditto on Sara Ramirez. And I think Jessica Capshaw is flourishing on Grey's - seems she is a great actress too! I've never been impressed by Shahi's acting, but she is real hot, so I'm surprised she's as under-rated as she is!!!

Wow, Elisabeth Moss looks
Wow, Elisabeth Moss looks SKINNY. Didn't she (or her character) have a baby at some point? It looks like she's wearing a corset or something. Ouch.

I definitely agree with
I definitely agree with Maura Tierney being underrated. Same with Parminder Nagra, and anyone in ER who wasn't George Clooney. God, I miss that show...
I'm glad they included Allison Mack on the EW list. She's probably the best thing to come out of Smallville, and let's face it, Clark would be completely lost without Chloe, let alone Lois.
I am loving this list.
I am loving this list. (And the shoutout--thanks, Linster!) Definitely with many of you on the Chandra Wilson sentiments, and Sara Ramirez should have definitely been officially on the list.
I would also suggest Kerry Washington and Allison Janney. I know Janney has had some bigtime roles and has a dedicated following, but she still doesn't get the notoriety she deserves. I used to think the same thing about Jane Lynch, but Glee is definitely changing that.

Totally agree with Katee Stackhoff but i was kind bummed
to see no Katey Sagal love- She was hilarious as Peg Bundy, Cool as hell as the voice of Lielaa and now shes one of the best parts of FX's Sons of Anarchy.
I love Katey Sagal and think shes immensly underated...both as an actress and as an incredibly attractive middle aged woman.
Thats my nerdy two cents.
OT
<3 pats
CSI girls
Sarah Shahi = NUMBER ONE
yeah, sarah shahi is
yeah,
sarah shahi is amazing.
Kristin Chenoweth
Kristin Chenoweth has to be the MOST underrated actress EVER!
I mean, God, the women has talent, is incredibly hot, sings like you could have never imagine a petit lady like that could sing...
And yet... she still can't get a job!
I just don't get it...

"Another life saved by girl on girl action"
But she just won an Emmy
Yeah but...
I do because not even with that emmy she can get a job...
Not even with an Emmy! How can you call that? Unfair? Injustice? Stupid? I still believe she is underrated as her, now dead, show was...
How is that no one can see the magic in this woman? Well no one who can give her a show... I mean.

Tracie Thoms should have been on it
I fell in love with her when I saw her in Rent(how cute was she as Joanne?) and think she is brilliant and so versatile as an actress. When I saw her in other stuff(Like Cold Case) I didn't recognize her, she has that ability to change her face I think. I wish she'd be in a romantic comedy...Preferably a lesbian one but I'll take anything
...not that I'm not objective
Poor choice of words?
I know that all of you at AE are probably some of the most sensitive and thoughtful writers out there when it come to political correctness, but I have to admit to be taken slightly aback when I read:
"Get over that breast cancer, friend, so you can show us your stuff again soon."
I know it was meant as playful, but telling someone to "get over that breast cancer" in conjunction with "show us your stuff again" (even though I know you were refering to her acting skills) is a tad distastful in my opinion...please don't hate me.
I completely agree
Yikes!
I vote
Tyne Daly. Easily the most underrated television actress ever.

Oh yes. I loved her on
Dragon Dancer
She is supposed to be on "Burn Notice" sometime next year, and has made appearances recently on TV (she was in a "Grey's Anatomy" ep.)
Cheers!

Recognition of Underrated Actresses
I love the show Lost and I could never keep my eyes off of Yunjim Kim, definitely one of the most underrated actresses. She has a stunning appeal about her-her acting, her aura, her looks-everything. She had me at the movie The Joy Luck Club.
I'm so glad you mentioned her.
I agree w/ the posters about Tracie and Jasika

I agree with most of the picks up there but Lena Headey should have been there as well, she is amazingly talented and unfortunately under-used.
