TV Alert: "ER" says goodbyeER has been good to us. Well, at least relative to other long-time network series. From Maggie Doyle (Jorja Fox) to Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes) to lesbian patients who were treated just like straight ones, ER has done its part for visibility.
Sure, we’ve had our quibbles with the way certain things were handled. Maggie was a wonderful character — a good doctor, a feminist with a sense of humor and a smart, confident lesbian — but we had no more than a hint (she ran into an ex) that she had a personal life. Which, of course, never stopped us from imagining ourselves as part of it.
We all melted along with Kerry when Kim (Elizabeth Mitchell) flirted with her, eventually bringing her out of the closet.
Then we groaned at her storyline with Sandy (Lisa Vidal) as 1) Sandy outs Kerry before she was ready by kissing her in the ER, 2) the two nearly break up on one episode because Sandy refuses to consider pregnancy and then — poof! — a year later, Sandy has a baby with no explanation of how they resolved the issue and 3) the story devolves further into stereotype when Sandy dies and Kerry faces a custody battle over the baby.
For the most part, however, ER has been ahead of the curve in terms of including lesbians in their cast of characters, both doctor and patient. When Dr. Weaver left the show, she was happy and in love, in a new relationship with an attractive and successful woman.
And this season, ER brought lesbians one of the best gifts of all: a story of a
The pair’s commitment to one another even served as an object lesson for a straight doctor.
Remarkably, ER has been on for 15 years.
Its original stars moved on, but changes in the staff never really affected the show’s quality or ratings. And the current cast bears little resemblance in size, personality or chemistry to those first docs and nurses.
But even though ER has not been must-see TV for me recently, tonight (9 p.m. ET) I will watch the two-hour finale and say goodbye to County General along with the staff. Shows like ER don’t come along too often and I, for one, will miss it. What has been your favorite part of ER over the years? What will you miss the most? Will you be watching the finale tonight? I used to be crazy about this show in the mid-90s!! many tv shows later, it is still, in my opinion, one of the best shows to air on tv....it will be missed.

I've loved Jorja Fox and Elizabeth Mitchell and caught all their episode in reruns... thankfully there will always be reruns. The end of an era comes to an end. It's hard to believe. This show was so ground-breaking in so many ways.

Jorja will be on the retrospective tonight
Laura Innes, Lisa Vidal, Elizabeth Mitchell, Jorja Fox
All of these women are strong and beautiful, each with their own side. I think that Elizabeth's character Kim would have been great for Jorja's character Maggie. Lisa's character Sandy and Laura's character Kerry were perfect together. I always pictured Susan Lewis hooking up with either Chuny Marquez or Carol Hathaway. I would have liked to have seen Susan with Kerry though too.
All my love, stay tuned for the series finale and some fun extras. Thanks for a wonderful 15 years!
Jorja & Maria
This used to be one of my favourite shows
I stopped watching a few seasons ago, but for many years ER was the show for me to watch.
It was a really good show and the lesbian storylines were a nice added bonus.

ER
I'm sad that ER is leaving
I'm sad that ER is leaving the air -- I have never missed an episode, have watched all the repeats on TNT and truly fell in love with the show when Abby walked thru the doors. With reality TV taking over the air waves, ER was always my dose of medical non reality. It brought us lots of great guest stars, lots of wonderful actors who might never have visited out living rooms if they had not been on the show. ER brought us a lesbian storyline when no one else really was and dealt with it well -- Ok, they killed the gf at one point, but such is life. It was a wonderful 15 years and I'll still tune in to watch the reruns, it's like going home again --

Might I add
I'm going to miss ER so
End of an era....
ER was the only hospital show I actually loved and kept watching. I think I've watched it for a good 5 or 6 years and then caught the reruns of the first few seasons. But they started airing it on really rotten times over here, so I couldn't watch it anymore. God, I loved that show :D Carol and Abby were my favorites when it comes to nurses (yes, I do realise she's a doc now ;) ) but as for doctors Susan and Lizzy Corday were the best :D
Oh wait.. there were guys in the show as well... Hmm... well, that's easy; Carter!!! he was so funny :D Back in the good old days, when they had that whole close group cast and the characters really had lives and hung out together :)
You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.
Cast shots and a timely exit
Though I agree with the sentiment (lately, I've found it hard to tell who we're supposed to care about and who's just a day-playing doctor, so towards the end I was just rooting for all our favorite nurses/support staff who've been there all 15 years), it's not fair to compare the cast sizes based on those two pictures. Really, in the second one, the only characters who even have names are the ones in the front row--actually, I'd argue that there are *less* main players now if you want to base it on those two shots.
And though I definitely support NBC's decision to end the show (despite my rampant fanage of the show--or probably because of it--I'd actually argue that it came a few seasons too late, though I can't pinpoint an exact place where it should have been cut off), it's without a doubt the end of an epic television era, one that shaped an entire generation of television drama and taught us more than a thing or two about inclusiveness and humanity in doing so. ER, you will be missed.
Sad
I have watched every single episode of this show, and I am gonna miss it. ALOT! Okay, so it hasn't been as good these past couple of years, as before. But it's still one of the best show's on TV, IMO.
Abby and Carol were/are definitely my favorites.
I've been watching since I was 14
and I'm going to miss it. I have to say that I don't think the show has had the same amount of chemistry in the last few seasons, but it's still been good (never felt like abandoning the show).
One of the most riveting hours of TV was when Carter and Lucy McKnight were stabbed (and Lucy was killed) and Carter's addiction. Very good. I loved Kim and Kerry, but wasn't excited with the way it was resolved, or much of what Kerry went through. Though Laura Innes was always fun to watch.
Romano (Paul McCrane) was a hoot. Jorja's character was always a cipher to me; they just didn't flesh her out enough. So many strong, powerful, highly competent women. Quite rare in TV history, me thinks.
Great ending. Fitting tribute to a fantastic 15-year run!
Goodbye ER....STAT
I'll definitely miss ER. As if I don't get enough hospital drama at work...lol.
They had great characters, interesting storylines and fairly realistic depiction of medicine in action.
I was disappointed they killed off Sandy. I thought she and Weaver were a great couple. Also loved Elizabeth Mitchell as well.
My other fave women were Sherry Stringfield, Parminder Nagra, Maura Tierney and what was the name of that blonde pediatrician that Carter dated for a while a long time ago? Her too!

Long live ER
Thanks, ER
The Laura Innes, Elizabeth Mitchell coupling kept me watching for months and helped give me enough courage to start dating women again. Soon afterwards I met the love of my life, Anne. We'll be celebrating our 8 year anniversary this month.

More..
Blonde pediatrician...Glenne Headly!
Also forgot that Mariska Hargitay was on there and Gloria Reuben and Ming Na.
Lots of great women!
Wow, just looking on IMDB....many stars in shows now were on ER way back when
including George Eades (CSI) David Krumholz (Numb3rs), Lucy Liu (tntm), Daniel Dae Kim (LOST), Liz Vassey!!!!,
Great guests too: Louise Fletcher, Pat Carroll, Ed Asner, Bob Newhart, Martha Plimpton,
Charlotte Rae....I better stop now!!!!
ER!
I had stopped watching religiously a few seasons back and I barely watched any this season, but I watched the finale last night. I loved watching the credits, is that weird? The recent seasons haven't had the opening credits like that, and they brought them back and I got goosebumps. Those credits are just amazing, they really capture the spirit of the show.
I thought they did a good job of the ending, with life just going on, another trauma coming in. Nice.
I was sad that we didn't get to hear or see anything about Kerry's current life. We saw Benton's son, Greene's daughter, heard about Carter's personal life, but nothing about Kerry's son or personal life. Kind of sad. But I'm glad they brought her back.
loved evey single episode!
