The Razzie Awards: What’s not hot in movies

The night before the Academy Awards, another ceremony served as a worthy prelude. No, not the Spirit Awards — that show is far too classy. This awards show selected the worst of the worst for a Golden Raspberry Award. The big “winner” was a familiar, um, face.

Paris Hilton tied the record for the most awards, scoring worst actress for The Hottie and the Nottie, worst supporting actress for Repo! The Genetic Opera and worst on-screen couple for her pairing with either Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore in Hottie.

Sadly, I missed Hilton’s tours de farce, but the Razzie Awards have my respect based on her fellow nominees for worst supporting actress:

Carmen ElectraDisaster Move and Meet the Spartans
Kim KardashianDisaster Movie
Jenny McCarthy Witless Protection
Leelee Sobieski 88 Minutes and In the Name of the King

I saw 88 Minutes. It took me a week to get the smell out of my clothes. Will someone get Leelee Sobieski a new agent?

Hilton’s competition for worst actress:

Jessica Alba The Eye and The Love Guru
Cameron Diaz What Happens In Vegas
Kate Hudson Fool’s Gold and My Best Friend’s Girl
The entire cast of The Women

I’m still ticked off about The Women. Even Jada Pinkett-Smith as a beautiful lesbian couldn’t redeem it.

The Love Guru earned the most Razzies of the evening, for worst actor (Mike Myers), worst screenplay and worst picture.

The trailer alone was enough to convince me the awards were well deserved. I won’t deface AfterEllen.com by posting it, but if you must see it, be my guest.

Check out the complete list of “winners” at the Razzie Award website and let us know what you think. Did Paris Hilton deserve to sweep the female categories? Was The Love Guru the worst movie of 2008? What are your personal picks for the 2008 worst of the worst?

My parents dragged me to see

My parents dragged me to see The Love Guru. Its only saving grace was an appearance from Mariska Hargitay.

    Hmm

Can't parents be arrested for things like that?

    88 Minutes wasn't THAT bad..

But The Love Guru definitely was. I still don't know how I maneged to suffer through the whole thing, especially cause I watched it at home and didn't have the guilt of paying and leaving in the middle.

But the worst movie of the year was Disaster Movie, no doubt about that.

Or maybe Dance movie. Was that the same one? They are all so freakishly and horribley alike.

    my best friend dragged me

    I laughed all the way

I laughed all the way through Love Guro! It was bad, but I thought is was good bad. But then again I some times have the humour of a teenage boy. :)

I happen to enjoy the Love Guru

My friends and I found it quite entertaining. It clearly wasn't trying to be a serious contendor in terms of the Oscars. It's job was to entertain and that I think it did well. It even made fun of itself, comparing past Mike Myers movies... it made me laugh and having Mariska H. make an apppearance was icing on the cake.

I think the new Madascar movie was bad. Actually walked out of that one. Wall-E was boring but quite intellectual... maybe I'd give it an award on principle.

Indiana Jones was also boring. Completely missed the mark.

I think the worst movie of the yr should go to either: Meet the Spartans or Disaster Movie. Really?! Would would agree to make these. At least The Love Guru is playing on a familiar type of movie goer - a guaranteed audience [i.e fans of the Austin Powers flicks]. What were pple thinking when they made these two? Epic Fail?!

    88 Minutes

I hated that movie. However, I rather do like Leelee Sobieski (which is likely why I managed to tough through the whole thing), and I can't help but agree that she needs a new agent.

    HAHA

"I saw 88 Minutes. It took me a week to get the smell out of my clothes. Will someone get Leelee Sobieski a new agent?"

You cracked me up :D I got forced to see it and I don't know the people who did anymore! I am not kidding :p

But I am shocked that The Women didn't "win". It was a horrible, horrible movie! The housekeeper was the only one who got nice lines and was neat in general. Jada is always beautiful but seriously...why did no one tell her that she doesn't play a dude? (I will get into trouble for that, I know, but I so didn't like it!) I was trying to write a review about the movie but hated the portraying of almost all the female characters so much that I was too sarcastic even for my own taste (and that's hard to reach, though).

Nice roundup, TheLinster! Like your posts a lot!

    The Women was crap.

The only good thing out of it was Cloris Leachman.

    Umm.. sex and the shi**y!

How could the Razzies miss the sex and the shi*ty now prolongated and made into a feature of real movie length - damn it even the show's finale episodes were a 100 times better. That chick flick was a complete torture - I can't believe I got dragged into that.. damn my friends! Luckily I didn't pay live money, but I will never get my wasted time back. The script was thinner than a church waffle and the humor was a fart joke..

    Repo! the Genetic Opera

Paris was actually surprisingly good in this, probably because she basically played herself (a spoiled rich girl who was always in the media). I don't know about the other films she was in, but she definitely did not deserve a Razzie for her role in Repo!.

    Repo

I personally thought that movie was hysterical, and that Paris was actually mildly attractive in it. Especially without a face...lol
