The "Battlestar Galactica" finale: Frakkin’ fabulous or frakked up?

In some ways, the series finale for Battlestar Galactica was much more difficult for me than the end of The L Word.

BSG was one of the most consistently innovative, well-written shows on television. The finale was no exception, IMO. It didn’t resolve every question about every person, but by the end, I felt like my investment in the series was rewarded.

Spoilers ahead. Seriously.

I’m sure that being raised in the Bible Belt is a big reason why I was so intrigued by Battlestar Galactica. The finale reinforced my perception that the main issue explored by the series is how a rational, scientifically advanced world deals with the concept of a higher power/god. Specifically, that trusting technology to deal with human imperfections leads to failure. Even when those imperfections are hard to spot.

I’d love to hear your take on some of the finale’s highlights and revelations, like the fact that the “resurrected” Starbuck was an angel (or at least some kind of messenger of God) who fulfilled her mission and then frakkin’ vanished into thin air.

Or the discovery that the Earth on which Galactica landed was actually Earth 150,000 years ago.

I think my favorite part of the episode was the music, although the music always seems perfect. But Starbuck’s programming of “All Along the Watchtower” as the coordinates for the jump to Earth was inspired. I literally got chill bumps when the music played.

What did you think of the BSG finale? What was your favorite scene? Are you frustrated with any unresolved questions?

    BSG gone but never forgotten.

Gah I love this show so much. SO frakkin' much and it is the only finale that has gotten me in tears. Perhaps ER had a chance of doing that but it went downhill to boredom zone when the main cast started leaving. The finale was amazing as is almost every episode ever of this entire series.

As with all things, there's always a loose end. Daniel is one, but it's not like we knew about him from the start and spent so much time pondering over who or what he was, like with the 5th Cylon. I just wonder if there was really any point in mentioning a character who in a sense, didn't exist at all.

Also I wonder where the hell is Three? Someone really should of sent her an email telling her to meet up with them on Earth 2.0.

All Along the Watchtower being played for any scene for any film/show ever made will always enhance it&blow my mind. But it gives me actual goosebumps too whenever it pops up in BSG. Main example being a recent episode where Kara and 'her father' play it on the piano.

I'm not sure what the point was in some of the flashbacks but when they were followed by the present day moments they did work well. Laura's may of just been for eyecandy purposes only. We can dream.
Laura was my favourite character and I find it saddening and yet at the same time quite beautiful, that she really was the dying leader who found earth or found her way to earth. Adama's love for her(&his crew) had me in even more tears

I'm slightly confused about Kara being the Harbinger of Death though. In what sense did she end up being this doomsday bringer to the entire human race? Is this a foresight statement, that because she brought them to Earth in another 150,000 years everything will happen again?

Anyway I'll stop with questions, I loved the finale and it certainly needs to be viewed a few more times. I'll miss BSG and I'll miss the episodes that were always on the Galactica and the regular yet brilliant day to day routine of humanities survival against a race of robots trying to wipe them all out.

    How could I forget?

"I'm not sure what the point was in some of the flashbacks but when they were followed by the present day moments they did work well. Laura's may of just been for eyecandy purposes only."

How could I forget to mention this in my comment? So Roslin's big important, career changing moment was sleeping with a younger man? Why? It made no sense. I have always wanted to see her get some action with someone more attractive than Adama, but to make a one-night-stand her major turning point for no clear reason was weak.

BSG Finale vs. The L Word Finale

There couldn't have really been a wider gap in quality between the two finales of these shows IMHO.

I haven't even been able to bring myself to watch The L Word's, merely read a recap. The interrogation tapes on Showtime's website further fuel my disdain for all things Chakien these days.

Where BSG excelled as an innovative sci-fi series it delivered also in the finale.

NOT everything was resolved: what about the Daniel cylon? how can such a technologically-based society regress to the point where it takes 150,00 years (biggest "years later" leap in a tv show ever?) to become humans NOW? But there was just enough resolution to keep the die-hard fans happy.

Some say Roslin's end wasn't huge enough - but I say, how poetic, that this (by-in-large) woman of peace exited her mortal coil whilst watching gazelles grazing and flamingos wading on the 'Earth' she helped find. Apt I feel. (I cried like a baby when she went, but hey...)

The battle scene with the Cylon colony was amazing! Ramming them with the Galactica - genius! The fragile truce broken by Tyrol strangling Tory - exciting! The colony getting nuked accidently and fortuitously by a dead raptor pilot floating in space - breathtaking!

The clever realization that Caprica had her own subconsious Baltar chatting to her all along was a nice touch too.

Starbuck as an Angel, and not a Cylon after all - intriguing.

I groaned slightly when we learned they all landed on what was to become our earth eventually. (A bit trite and twee and preachy etc?) BUT when they showed those clips of robot toys and the little group of robots marching together then that female Japanese teacher robot, it sent a shiver down my spine.

Finale - ur doin' in RIGHT.

At least in MY sci-fi land.

Ilene, takes notes and try to do better next time...

...if you watched the preview for the upcoming spinoff prequel you met daniel, they made a point of introducing one and only one character by name....daniel....and yeah we knew what had happened to him, cavil had him destroyed w/no possiblity of resurrection....

to me i read the landing on earth 2.0 as not landing on our earth, the decimated one they'd found earlier was our earth, this new earth was unspoiled and pure, unless we frakked it up......150,000 years later...oops, still preachy none the less

Kara Thrace and Her Special Destiny--good band name?

    A few things.

Where was Three? While we all (I'm sure) love Lucy Lawless, she stayed behind on Earth 1.0, unfortunately. She was the last of her line/model, so when she died on the irradiated planet, there was no chance for her.

Kara Thrace is totally the Harbinger of Death, she and her special destiny. She didn't bring the human population to a literal, physical death, but she changed them forever. When she brought them to Earth, they started fresh and new, not holding on to anything of the past. In that sense, she was the death of the old order.

And could I love "All Along the Watchtower" more? When they first introduced it, I was wary. Why use contemporary (in a sense) music? But it fits. And it can be so haunting and powerful. My favorite rendition of it was when Kara played it on the piano with her father. I can't wait for the soundtrack to come out so I can listen to it over and over. I still get goosebumps. And while I'm on music, "Roslin and Adama" always brings me to the verge of tears. So beautiful.

    eohl's picture

    Kara Thrace as Starbuck

When watching the very first episode of BSG and finding out that Starbuck was a woman? I was VERY excited. Then watching further episodes, I'm afraid I never took to Katee as this character; her acting was all over the place and a wee too much over acting at times. The original Starbuck, Dirk Benedict will remain my favourite Starbuck.

BUT, saying that, I had goose bumps and my favourite scene in the last episode was hearing "All Along the Watchtower" as Kara put in the jump co-ordinates based on a very precise dot picture produced by one small, but very important young girl. It reminded me, that as adults we often overlook or ignore the importance of what a child can offer their society, tribe or family, how children can assist and provide solutions if given the chance. Remove them from our lives and we are the poorer for it and sometimes it takes a crises to recognise just how important they are. This scene reminded me that God could use anyone for His purpose, believers or non, old or young.

As for Kara being the harbinger of death. Often death is seen as final. An end. I see death as being just a turning point, an indication of coming change, just the start to a new beginning, as do many religions.

The ending with the look at life today and where we are going with robotics made me smile and shake my head. Why? Did you see the homeless person sitting under the window? This scene to me prompted the thought that it is important to look at and work in the present towards todays needs, and that there is more than a 'possible' future to worry about, but a society that needs fixing first, now. It was especially poignant given the economic times where the needs of the number of homeless and destitute need to be addressed and thank the Gods we were lucky to have such shows such as the current BSG that makes us stop and think, reflect on what is important and how it relates to today’s issues.

I also believe that too often we repeat our mistakes.

    "I'm slightly confused

"I'm slightly confused about Kara being the Harbinger of Death though. In what sense did she end up being this doomsday bringer to the entire human race?"

That is the least ambiguous aspect of the finale.    Kara brought doomsday to the human race by way of enabling Lee to unilaterally condemn all the survivors of the high tech colonies to a new stone age.

I expect the pilots like Lee and Athena had survival training, just as our own pilots receive.  They learn to make fire,  eat bugs,  build crude shelter, etc.   But how about all those computer repairmen,  space warp engine mechanics, lawyers, trillium processors, and all the other various specialists that make up a space faring culture.  Now suddenly and totally deprived of tools, medicines,  and the safety and support of numbers as they are scattered across a globe, what are their survival prospects.  Note how the news story of "Eve" specifies this was a YOUNG woman at her death.

It's ironic, but the ONLY farmer we know to have survived the colonies was Baltar.   And since all mankind traces to Eve,  we see this was the only successful outpost.  The rest would have died miserably, and probably soon.

Thanks a lot Lee.  Were Kara not the harbinger of doom she would have left Lee on the nuked earth and brought 3 to the new Earth instead.

Btw,  did anybody notice the scale of the Galactica in the scene attacking the Cylon base?  If I understood correctly Tigh said they had to jump to within a kilometer, and the external shot shows the nose of Galactica a very short distance from the base before they resume and ram.   Extrapolating that indicates Galactica was at least 15 kilometers stem to stern.
    TVL 's picture

    Kara

I always thought that Kara was supposed to be the Harbinger of death for the cylons, not the humans. Because the cylons intergrated in the human society they would eventually produce offspring with them therefore ending pure cylon life as they knew it. It also makes sense because at the end when they show "fantasy" Baltar and Caprica, they are looking at the magazine talking about the mother of the whole human race which is Hera- the half human, half cylon kid. She took them to the stone age to learn from their mistakes and as you see when they show the "future" they were creating the machines all over again.

    Finale

My roommates and I usually all watch BSG together every Friday night, so you can imagine our consternation with the finale scheduled for the first Friday of Spring Break. We all watched it separately, sobbed uncontrollably, and then had multiple AIM and phone sessions processing it as we watched it again and again. I'm so sad that BSG is gone--it was such an excellently written show with such strong female characters--but I'm ultimately glad it was ended when it did.

    Fabulous

I don't think I have words left about the finale, after having talked about it all week-end with fellow fans, but I loved every minute of it, it was haunting, beautiful, spiritual, inspired, brilliant and frakkin awesome. I cried several times, said frak a lot, and basically looked at my screen with pure despair when it was over, I just couldn't believe it was finished.

This show is to me the best show on TV, and it will be that way for a long time, I doubt any show will reach the quality and the depth of the writing we had on BSG.

    So say we all.

It will be a long time before a show of equal caliber will come along.

    cosmiccowgirl's picture

    it was okay

I have gradually lost my obsession for this show, and I feel like the finale was the best we could have hoped for given what led up to it. They had sort of written themselves into a corner with the religion/supernatural stuff. It is probably for the best that they didn't try to over-explain Starbuck or the head characters. In general I'm not a big fan of supernatural explanations.

I agree that Starbuck programming "All along the Watchtower" as the coordinates of Earth was awesome. However, it was a total cheat that the earth they found is this earth. The way they found the first earth was using our constellations. So am I to understand that both earths have the exact same star patterns???

I think Kara was the harbinger of death in that she brought about the death of humans and cylons and brought forth a new race of hybrids, aka, us.

To me the biggest disappointment of the show was Roslin. She has always been my favorite character, and I hate what they did with her in season 4.5. She gives up her leadership role and plays practically no part in actually leading the fleet to the new earth. By the end she's a ... nurse? WTF? It has always been clear that she would die in the final episode, but I would have liked for her to get to do something--ANYTHING--on her way out.

The ending was a lot more upbeat and a lot less dark than I was expecting. I don't know if this is good or bad. I almost felt a little cheated that more people didn't die. I mean this show is supposed to be dark and edgy, and not one main character who wasn't pantently evil (Tory, Boomer) or already dying (Roslin, Sam) was sacrificed. Helo was supposed to be dead--I cried for him. Bringing him back especially was cheating.

Overall, it coud have been a lot better and a lot worse. The quality of the whole series was so uneven--sometimes utterly brilliant, sometimes embarassingly bad. The finale sort of embodied the whole show in that way.

I did want Roslin to have a

I did want Roslin to have a more epic diving ending to it all. Considering who she was and what she was, I htink she deserved alot more. The only time she did anything or came alive was with the Hera Opera House conclusion on board Galactica in the finale. But I kinda knew from the moment you saw her weezened in the hospital ward, that we weren't going to be given that brilliant spectacular moment of her doing something so awesome our jaw dropped so I had to live with it.

The only part I really didn't like, as in almost hated was the ending. I do not want to see our Earth in this Sci-Fi space opera fantastical show and I certainly don't want to see the ending of this show being full of clips of toy robots. I get the message you were trying to get across RDM, but it was already here from the start of the first episode of BSG. It wasn't needed

Still she must be kicking herself if she found out how things played out :D

I also wanted her to have something more final. I thought we'd find out why she was special enough to see the Final 5. Was it because of some divine intervention or simply the dying process and rebirth of the skinjobs happened to trigger something within her systems?

Best 2hrs and 11 mins of tv ever

I loved the finale. Especialy Kara's ending. I really did not like Starbuck this season, so to know that she was only a temperary ghost/angel/whatever was a really good way for me to justify not having to remember her from this season at all.

The music has always been one of my favorite parts of the series and I think the finale totaly lived up to that standard. Although, I do think 'All Along the Watchtower' might have been a bit overused a little bit. It seemed like it was in every important scene.

    Frakkin' amazing!

I still can't get over it.  It ended so well, left me in tears. The way the opera house scene played out was just beauitful and the fact that they found Earth. I wish Lucy Lawless had been in the final but oh well. The finale honestly made up for the rest of this season. I was getting really disheartened at how lame it was turning out to be.

    Good but not Great

I am a huge BSG fan, and an even bigger Starbuck fan (so much so I went as her for Halloween this year and bought her dog tags).  As far as the finale went it was okay.  I wouldn't call it fantastic and it had its flaws but it brought a majority to close and ended up happy which was a plus because I was preparing myself for the worst.

A few of my problems with the finale:  Starbuck being an "angel", kind of a cop out I feel as a fan.  Cavil just killing himself out of character, he atleast would have tried to take Adama with him.  The flashbacks, I didn't find them as needed as I guess they wanted us to believe.  The flashforwad ending of Ron Moore in time square; I think we get the point, AI in Robots BAD.  And one of my personal upset was not even a good by hug for Saul and Adama on camera.  Their relationship was a big plot point for both of them and not even a handshake and Goodbye Old Man I will Fraking miss you.  Oh yeah and Starbuck disapering on Lee and being an "angel", haha.

Some of the parts I loved and thta made it a good finale:  Yaya they found another Earth!  One of the best scenes was watching the Galactica go over the moon, I jumped up and yelled "NO WAY!!!".  Good to have them end up with some hope.  The Chief killing Tori, that sequence was filmed real well and rocked, what goes around comes around.  I loved that Saul and Ellen ride off into the sunset together, they are so frakked up they deserve each other.  I also loved Caprica Six and Baltar ending up together.  Baltars character come around full cricle which I thought was great.  Lee Adama finally kicking butt again.  All the action and the graphics were killer!  And finally I liked the beautiful ending of Roslin, she got to see even if for a shirt time, she got to see the Journey to the end and to a happy end.

All in all for a finale it was good and wrapped up pretty much the series well.  I think for a long time people such as my self will question the writing and ending of the Starbuck character but otherwise I think this show is by far all together one of the best TV shows to really challenge you and make you think for this gerneration and several to come.

    TheWeyrd1's picture

I was late in arriving to the show and did the catching up thing

via the summary episode before last season.  I have to say, not being there at the beginning and seeing all the details first hand and not in recap version probably explains why the finale was a tad confusing to me.  I would like another 8 minute recap episode thank you...lol

As for some of my impressions.  Kara was weirdly too girly in the flashback scenes.  I wondered why I recognized the music, but didn't put it together until reading this post.  I missed Lucy.  Wasn't she supposed to be in the finale?  I don't get the reasoning for having a new show with the Cylon point of view since it seems like the way this one ended it was actually coming from both human and cylon point a views concurrently...

    Vaxen's picture

    Loved it, pretty much

So much of the Starbuck story line was unresolved, including the signifigance of the scenes with her mother a season or so ago, the Cylones examining her when she was in the baby factory, and the Harbinger of Death angle.

Got to wonder about the signifigance of letting the Centurians fly off with a "they earned it."

One of my favorite moments is Baltar and Caprica waiting for the attack when both of their angels appear.  Nice way to tie up that mystery.

In general, I agree with all the other good things that were mentioned so far and will miss BSG.

Not Perfect, but great Fracking finale

I think this review summed it up perfectly - not everything was answered, but it really stayed true to the series and gave us action, character and plot in a thoughtful and emotional way.  I think I only missed seeing Lucy Lawless return in some form and I would have liked a glimpse of Daniel.  Seems to me he had to be Starbucks dad who gave her the music notes.  Couldn't Ellen have seen a picture of Starbuck with her dad and just commented how much she missed seeing Daniels face.  It could have been very subtle - but I so appreciate how much love and care went into this finale.  Unlike the L Word which always used a jackhammer when a scalpel was needed.
    tellofilms 's picture

    Daniel= Starbuck's dad

I totally agree and thought they were going to bring that around too- which means Starbuck is really the first hybrid - which I think is very interesting and would make sense that she was the "Harbinger of doom" and knew the coordinates from Hera.

I also thought her disappearing was a little too easy.  There was the huge mystery and I thought it would be this wonderful answer that made such sense.  I would hope angels would come back with a bit of a better sense of themselves than Starbuck.  they also never explained her new raptor- it's an angel too?

I love this show and was pleased with the ending except for Starbuck's storyline.  That really ruined it for me and she was my favorite character.

BTW- great comments from everyone- I've loved reading them.  Best commentary on the finale that I've read thus far.

    Likes: I really liked the

Likes: I really liked the fact that Starbuck and Lee did not end up together.  It made it different from almost every other show.  I also liked the fact that in the end, Starbuck is forgotten, like all of us are.  It was depressing, yet really neat, to put the characters lives in perspective...that we can get so wrapped up in these people that are just blips in time.

Dislikes:  The episode as a whole seemed like it was not written by the same writers.  I hated all of the flashbacks.  To make Roslin lose all of her family to an unseen car wreck, dramatically stand in a fountain in overwrought mourning, and prance around in lingerie after sleeping with a young "hot" man, was so dissappointing.  The other flashbacks were superfluous at best.  Frankly, it seemed more like the L Word than BSG.

They did not give Chief a fitting end.  Chief was always the most standup guy, and it would not be realistic for him to kill Tory.  Chief was never in love with Callie and Callie was about to kill her child when Tory tricked and killed her.

All in all, it was not the worst finale ever, but it did not reach the level of excellence that previous episodes had.

    ambivalence

i thought the finale was overwritten in parts and hit us, the fans, in the head with metaphors designed to highlight connections/relationships we didn't need highlighted (Lee and that frakking bird comes to mind), but am hopeful that when the box set comes out and i watch the series from beginning to end i will begin to love it.

nothing tops the finale of Six Feet Under for me though -- cried like a baby when Claire drove away.  every time i watch it.

    Gaius & Cultivation

I really liked the finale, for many of the reasons mentioned in the thread already.. But I really, really, liked the final moment between Caprica & Gaius when Gaius starts talking about cultivation, and has to stop as he realizes, and then begins to cry, and Caprica tells him she understands.

Gaius was one of the characters that really provoked me in the show. I think like Caprica I always wanted so desperately to be proud of him, and that really was the greatest thing lacking in his character.

He did so many horrible, terrible things--betraying humans time and time again--and then is able, in that moment, to recieve forgiveness and understanding, and, I think her real gift to him--the hope from another that he does, in fact know about 'farming.'

    Loved this show!

    drbambee's picture

My eyes also welled up ...

... when Baltar, the smartest man on Caprica (the planet, not the Cylon) came to the realization that he can farm.  I think it was a sort of metaphor that tied the whole series together.

    I cried like a baby...

I honestly can't put into words how much I love this show. It's a shame that a wider audience never really got a chance to find it because of it having a "sci-fi" label attached to it, but it's so much more than that. So so so sooooo sad it's over. Although this does mean the whole series will hopefully be coming to blu-ray soon! (one shining spot)

As a whole, the finale was fine. There are things that I wish didn't happen but I understand why they did it that way. I was really pulling for a happy ending between Lee and Kara but it just wasn't meant to be and the flashbacks showcased that.

Kara's ending upset me the most just because I feel like her character deserved more of an ending than that. I don't really care for "interpret your own endings" anyway so this just pissed me off more than anything.  Starbuck was just such a bad ass character that I kinda feel like she went out with a whimper. AND she was supposed to be the harbinger of death? Who exactly was she the harbinger of death for? She saved them all. Not exactly the angel of death. I get what they did and why they did it, it just depresses me and that makes me mad. Grrr. I just wanted her death to be more, the same for Roslin's.

Also, this doesn't really pretain to the finale exactly but if Hera's blood helped Laura once, why couldn't it help her again? I loved her character and loved how strong she was and after finding out about what happened to her family, I loved her even more. Sad, sad. Adama & Laura's scene in the finale made me weep like a little baby and my heart physically hurt because you could tell how much their characters loved each other.

I just wanted everyone to live happily ever after, haha. I guess it's the romantic in me :) Adama & Laura, Starbuck & Apollo, Saul & Ellen..and even Gaius & Caprica.. Lee kinda got the worst of it, he lost Kara and his dad at the same time. Poor Lee.

I loved the battle of the first hour, the last stand of what could have been their last day. So great.

i think it's too soon for me to really fully think about the end though.. I refuse to believe it's all over.

I was new to BSG this season primarily because of the talk about it on this site.  So I am wayyyyyyy behind on what went on prior to this season.  Happily, I can go back and get the DVD's and catch up!

I liked that Kara was an angel.  It was a much better conclusion than her being a Cylon.

I did not know of the Caprica/Baltar angels so that area was a bit shaky for me.  It was the angels that then appeared in the very end scene in the future?

Adama and Laura at the end was a beautiful send off.  I wondered if he would take himself with her and maybe crash but I am glad he proceeded with his life.

All Along the Watchtower....one of the greatest songs ever.....wonderful use of the song.

    So long, Galactica...

I have mixed feelings about the finale.  I can't say that I was disappointed, exactly, but I didn't love it.  Well, I loved the first half, but the second half, after landing on Earth, not as much.  Do think we could have done without the coda at the end, but then where would RDM have put his cameo?  My theory of when the whole series took place (in our very distant future) turned out to be completely wrong, so maybe that's why I wasn't thrilled with the ending.  :P  Really, though, I loved the way the Opera House visions played out, I LOVED the scene of Kara punching in the jump coordinates and how that all tied together so nicely (my favorite part of the finale, actually), I'm so glad Boomer got some much needed redemption, and I really thought Baltar getting choked up at the end when he tells Caprica that he knows something about farming was a nice touch.  I won't list all the other things I liked, or the things I didn't like so much, or I'd end up summarizing the entire episode.  But as for Kara's exit, which I think is probably one of the most controversial parts of the finale.. well, I'm not sure how I feel about that.  I really don't know whether I love it or hate it.  I think I just hate that she's gone and BSG is over.  Gods, I'll miss this show.. but Starbuck.. oh Starbuck, I'll miss you most of all.

    stunning

i was jumping out of my chair freaking out through most of it.

kara entering in the coordinates through "all along the watchtower".  *chills*

And bear mccreary is a musical genius.  period.  his use of the ORIGINAL battlestar galactica themesong as the fleet floats off into the sun?

breathtaking.  i have to go watch it again now.

    Great ending to a great

Great ending to a great series. I choked on several scenes. The creators clearly took their time for a well-made send-off of these characters. That's how every show should end. very well done. It will be sorely missed.

I have high hopes for spinoff series Caprica... let's see how that one goes...

I'm going to miss the frakkin' show so much it hurts.

BSG has been nothing short of outstanding, as a whole.  I have always especially loved the fact that, whether you noticed or not, it had the best written female characters in television history; and that most of the episodes centered around the 4 female leads: Laura, Starbuck, Caprica, and Sharon.  Hell, even the finale centered on the rescue of the mother of us all, Hera Agathon.  Ronald D. Moore and David Eick did more to present positive female characters than any other show out there.  Ever!  Thank you, gentlemen.  I can't wait for future projects from these two men, especially when the work together.

I'm going to give myself some time to process the finale and then I'm going to take a week and watch the whole series over from beginning to end in one long marathon.

Battlestar Galactica, you will be missed.  Oh, I'm going to start crying again.

    No regrets

Penny, better late than never right?  I don't regret not having seen the earlier episodes because now I have a chance to start from square one and see it all without having to wait to see what happens eventually.  That does not spoil it for me, and in fact, it takes the pressure off so I can enjoy all the facets of each episode.

I do remember BSG when it was first on many many years ago, and did get that they used the original theme music.  Nice touch!

Kind of like Spielberg/Lucas using tidbits from their other movies in the Indiana Jones series.

    So Fracking Good...

I was introduced to the series after it was already well on its way, but it quickly became my favorite series, and I consider it to be the best show on television (now, I suppose, previously on television).

The ending, while it didn't have everything that I wanted, was beautiful, heart wrenching, and it gave us closure for the most important aspects of the story. I admit that I cried like a baby with Roslin and Adama's storyline, all the way up through the end. It was such a pretty way for her to go... though I agree with some others who have commented that I feel she could have done just a bit more and done that one last fantastic thing before they found earth, even. But, I'll take that she was still helping out in sick bay, and the look in Adama's eyes when she radioed the 'all set' was priceless. I loved his scene with her grave, and commenting on where he would build the cabin... I actually would have prefered they  end the show there, with Adama looking out into the horizon with that brilliant sunset.

As for Kara... I don't know what to do with her storyline. On one hand, I love the way it ended, on the other, I hate it. Though it would have been a bit cliche, I really wanted her and Lee to be together. From the beginning of the series and through the flashbacks, it's just obvious that they are meant to be. I would have liked to see more emotion from her on her exit, and damn, they should have made the boy cry. I kind of like her role as an angel, but I think I would have liked it more if she had just been someone who had been chosen by g(G)od to carry out the mission.

One of my favorite things, and I was surprised by this, was Baltar & Caprica. Baltar is finally acting human (an ironic thing, considering his role in all this and his relationship), and I loved the happy ending with Caprica. I almost squeeled myself out of my seat when both their angels appeared at the same time, and they finally realized what was happening. I also loved the realization of the Opera House, that was so beautifully done.

A couple random gripes: 1. Tigh and Adama. Their whole flashback was together, and yet they didn't say goodbye to each other. That's odd.  2. Daniel. Nuff said. 3.Cavil. It was extremely odd that he just gave up like that and killed himself; dispite the fact that he knew he was done for, I would have thought he would have at least tried to escape, or take someone with him.

While I'm not actually familiar with "All Along the Watchtower" outside of the show, I have to give kudos to Bear McCreary for some amazing music. It was one of my favorite things in the series. I went a little crazy in the high of the finale and ordered the first three seasons of music, plus the miniseries, as well as preordering Caprica.

Overall, I will miss you, BSG.

    Theories

I really, really enjoyed the finale. I thought it hit on a lot of the themes they'd been building all series long, and gave us some good closure. Was it perfect? Nope. I think having Starbuck turn out to be Daniel's daughter would have made more sense, but then maybe that's something they'll deal with in the spin-off?

A friend of mine has an interesting theory, though, that kind of blew my mind and I can't believe I didn't think of this before:

Earth 1.0 was our Earth, only a great deal of time in the future. When Starbuck jumped the Galactica it was right over a black hole, something that could, in theory, cause a time-jump to occur. So say Galactica actually jumps back in time a few hundred-thousand years, and re-finds Earth, only this time it's Earth at the dawn of mankind. They land and mingle with the existing population, thus leading to modern humans (that'd be us), who are essentially the descendents of human/Cylon hybrids from the future. And modern humans end up being the Final 5 type Cylons that Tigh, Ellen and the rest were part of (which makes sense, considering they claim to have last known each other 2,000 years prior on Earth, just before it got nuked--and their journey afterward to what would become the colonies includes all of the Lords of Kobol legends from earlier in the series).

All of this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

    Hey, it could work! :)

    Showtime

should have hired the BSG writing staff to handle the L-Word's final season.  Maybe Jenny turns out be an angel or figment of everyone's imagination...or maybe just a harbinger of doom.

My favorite scene was Lee commanding his assault team into the breach; using hand signals, and seeing the redstripe centurions follow his orders...epitomized the rebel-cylon/human bond for me.

Question about what Kara said to Sam

Was it just me or did Kara whisper to Sam "I don't love you" before he said he would see her on the other side? I have been debating this with my bff for a week. And neither one of our DVRs was clear enough to hear perfectly.

     Help!
