"Sunshine Cleaning" is a woman's film – and we don't mean chick flickImagine a movie written by a woman, directed by a woman, starring two women, targeted at women.
No, it’s not a stinker. It’s Sunshine Cleaning — and it’s a winner.
As Dorothy Snarker told us last fall Amy Adams and Emily Blunt team up as sisters Rose and Norah who start a crime scene cleaning business together.
Sunshine Cleaning is written by first-time screenwriter Megan Holley and directed by Christine Jeffs. Oh, and Mary Lynn Rajskub plays a lesbian.
I snuck into a sneak preview — OK, I was invited — and, although the promotions have made much of the fact that this movie is “from the producers of Little Miss Sunshine,” the similarities end with Alan Arkin and the word “sunshine.” And Albuquerque. And a cute kid.
Seriously, though, this movie is not sunshiny, and that’s probably why I liked it so much. It’s not depressing, by any means, and much of the humor is of the dark variety.
Adams and Blunt have terrific chemistry and, despite their hotness, are completely believable as women who have made some bad decisions along the way and are now just trying to make their lives better.
Rajskub plays reserved lesbian Lynn (we’ll have more about her on the blog next week) who meets Norah at a “cleaning.” The relationship between the two feels unfinished — probably because a good bit of it ended up on the cutting room floor — but one scene that did make it to the movie is worth the price of the ticket. I’ll give you a hint: It has to do with a candy necklace. An edible candy necklace. If that’s not enough to convince you to see it, then what are you doing at AfterEllen.com?
Sunshine Cleaning did really well in limited release last week and will open in major cities this weekend. Look for a wide release next Friday. (And if I haven’t quite convinced you yet, check out Women & Hollywood’s “Why You Should See Sunshine Cleaning.”) Is Sunshine Cleaning on your list of must-see movies? OMG
LOVED it
just saw a screening this week, and it was fantastic. though, it wasnt what i expected - it's definitely a lot darker than the trailers made it out to be. (so dont expect a total comedy).
emily blunt and amy adams are absolutely fantastic, and Mary Lynn Rajskrub is really engaging to watch. also, the actor who plays amy adam's son does a really good job - but while i love alan arkin, im feeling a little eh about the fact that his character is so much like his from Little Miss Sunshine (loving, if not somewhat misguided, grandfather).
as for the lesbian storyline, i was actually pretty confused by it. at first i thought Lynn was gay, and then i thought she was just sort of a loner. afterward, my friends and i all concluded she wasnt gay, but apparently we were wrong? would have loved to see where that could have gone. OH, and another standout - Winston!
okay, enough rambling. go see this as soon as it comes out!

ok, if you were confused...
then I'd be in the middle of the desert LOST! lmao.
but since there was a mention of the whole "candy"....can't wait!
hey, adams and blunt together sounds like a treat. :P
Lynn
I'll do more about Lynn next week. The character is a lesbian, yes. Maybe it was clear to me because I knew that going in. Interesting.
you had me at edible...
I can't wait
This movie was great
I saw it last weekend and I really enjoyed it. There were some absolutely beautiful and moving moments in it.. i.e. Emily Blunt under the train platform and Amy Adams sitting with the widow on the bench. Acting was superb in it as well. I really loved the relationship between Emily Blunt's character and Mary Lynn Rajskub's character as well (I even wished they had gone a little further with it, but I can understand how that would have been messed up considering the secret Emily Blunt's character was keeping)...
The only part I didn't like is the part in the bathroom towards the end, I thought it was a bit too dragged out. They didn't really need to talk about their childhood trauma, it was already so alive in their characters throughout the movie (because they are good actors!) , I could feel the pain they carried already so strongly...talking about it kind of ruined it a bit. The script in this moment and at the end felt like it needed to be tightened up a bit. But aside from this small nitpicky detail, the movie was really fantastic and I highly recommend it :)

going to see it TODAY! :-D

I love Emily Blunt.
My Summer of Love is one of my fave movies, and not even because of the lesbian content. The characters are just great.
I'll definitely be seeing Sunshine Cleaning and hopefully lots of other women will too. Unfortunately the bombing of several dozen Chick Flicks hasn't sent the message that no one really wants to see that crap. (Kate Hudson is going to have to rethink her career strategy altogether)
Although, the worst Chick Flick ever, "He's just not that into you" did well at the box office, so maybe I'm wrong.
Well, at least we could get them to diversify a little more. :) Buy a ticket!
I love
I love humour of the dark variety.

ohemgee! edibly candy
ohemgee! edible candy necklaces make me think of the first girl who kissed me. quite innocent though. she would always wear them to college and ask if anyone wanted a candy piece and like stretch it out and i'd get close and eat some. i started buying them a lot myself :p one time someone was like, why don't you take it off first and i was like O.o i never even thought of that cus it wasn't how she did it..

I really want to see this
Amy Adams
Love Amy in most movies I've seen her in.. however after seeing her in Enchanted I had a hard time with this one because her voice would just make me anticipate her breaking out into song! ;) But still good!

excited about movies again
It is so nice to be excited about seeing movies again. For so long I didn't care whether I saw something in the theater or not. From a girl who used to watch EVERY movie in the theater. I saw the previews for this during The Reader and was thrilled it was being advertised there. Can't wait for the wider release.

DittO!
Nice
I've been waiting to see this movie and I'm so happy it comes out soon. My local "artsy" theater will have it next weekend but I'll be back at school so maybe I'll come back and see it. I can't wait to see Amy&Emily's chemistry for myself. I think based on what I've seen I'll like the movie a lot. The clip was entertaining too, can't wait to see it.

Definitely
I will definitely see it. I think it's crucial for women to support women at every opportunity, especially in the Arts.

Looking forward to this one...
I rarely go see movies at the theater these days, as they seem to come out so quick on DVD that I figure... eh, why bother? However this is one movie that may tempt me into getting my butt off the couch and heading back to the theater.
I'm a fan of both women and their body of work thus far, so to see them both together in a film makes me curious as to how they play off each other. Then to add Mary Lynn Rajskub to the mix and I'm an even happier camper (love her as Chloe on "24" and wish she and Janeane Garafolo would get to mix it up some more on the show).
Thanks for the review!

This looks extra incredible!
I'm going to see this today!!
Really, how could I not?
Quick question for anyone who's already seen it -- would it be an awkward one to see with my dad?
loved sunshine cleaning!
it was a great movie! glad i saw it. wish the ending would've wrapped up the characters more...but at least it was open-ended. excellent acting all around, more reasons to love amy adams and emily blunt. this movie somewhat reminds me of a show i miss so much: Six Feet Under.
and yes, it's a "safe" movie to watch with your dad :)
how are they going to dress
Great movie
:-(
It's not playing in any theatres near me!
I wanted to see it soooo badly.

Oh dear...
I just read a spoiler there on youtube from a guy/girl whos already seen the movie...safe to say i'm not going to amazing measures to see it now. :( Sad times. Although with that said Emily Blunt is in it so I do really have to see it...it's like the law!
sunshine cleaning
just saw it yesterday
and I really enjoyed it!
Emily Blunt is just too funny, I've liked her since The devil wears Prada.
And the storyline with Lynn seemed unfinished to me! They should have met another time at least or Norah should have send her a postcard from her trip or anything!
Oh, and I totally want to eat a candy necklace from Emily Blunts neck now!
Emily Blunt is s adorable in
