"Speed Racer" trailer: CGI in high gearWhen a group of guys is huddled around a computer oohing and ahhing, it can mean only one thing: cars. You thought I was going to say porn, didn't you? Well, that's what I expected when I sneaked up behind them, hoping for a peek of something naughty. Instead, I saw this.
It's the car Speed's rival, Racer X, will be driving in the movie Speed Racer. In case you care, the car is modeled after ARTA's Super GT 300 car. That means absolutely nothing to me, but now you know. And just so your day will be complete, here's what Speed will be driving.
Since my main requirement for a car is leather seats, I'm much more interested in the movie itself, which stars, among other people, Christina Ricci, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman.
Oh, it also stars a monkey, er, chimpanzee. I understand chimps get testy if you call them monkeys. You know it's hard out here for a chimp. Speed Racer is written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski, to whom I will forever be grateful. Since the brothers were also responsible for a little movie called The Matrix, Speed Racer has been generating a lot of hype, especially about the 2000+ special effects — nearly three times the amount in most CGI-enhanced movies. Take a look at the trailer and see what you think. Speed Racer is due in theaters in May. Let's hope the actors are a little livelier in the film than they were in this press conference. Otherwise, I may have to just watch Bound again. How about you? Are you looking forward to Speed Racer? Do the cars make you all tingly? Wait, never mind that last question. I really don't want to know. Submitted by on January 16, 2008 - 6:34pm. |

OMG
Talk about cloitis interuptus ....
I saw the headline of the article and as I read "Speed Racer", my legs started to twitch, and my heart began to race. I would have experienced "a little death" had I not opened and read the rest of the article. Once again, "they", (whoever "they" are), are bastardizing one of the finest memories of my childhood. Just last year, my sister gave me a "retro Christmas", with all chidhood memories in the package: a Green Eggs and Ham coffee mug, a Kimba the White Lion DVD, and my prized possession, my Speed Racer T-shirt. Why must "they" ruin such greatness?
And why must Susan Sarandon be an accomplice to this criminal act?
I won't see this movie. I can recover from the trauma caused by that trailer, but not from a full two hour assault on my youth.

SPEED RACER!!!
I loved the anime when I was a little six year old baby dyke!!! I think this is the first anime I ever saw and since they didn't translate the openeings to catalan back then (the 90's), I still know the japanese lyrics of by heart (but have no clue what they're saying).
Here's the opening

But the Wachoski??? Really?? I personally would lick the floor they tread on (I adore them), but I think this is more a Tim Burton movie... I don't know...
Well...
Well I was actually going to translate the lyrics for you but... someone did it for me.

Hmmmm
Well, when I first heard that there was going to be a Speed Racer (my favorite show ever as a child) movie with Christina Ricci, I almost had a filmgasm. However, the whole thing just seems a bit too slick and serious. The fun of the show was in the campiness. I was kinda hoping for a Tank Girl-esque sort of thing.
Oh well,
"Go, Speed Racer, go!"
Oh no!
My curse in life is to pretend not to know what people are going to say when they say " do you know who you look like?" The answer is always either Christina Ricci OR Wednesday Addams.
Maybe i'll get that hairstyle she has going on in that picture above, just to make it that more obvious.

I love Speed Racer - I even had the collectible car (which my brother inherited when I moved to another country). I had been waiting in anticipation for this movie - it has two positive things going for it: Directors and casting. I think the casting choices were excellent (if you know ther personalities of the characters, you'll agree that Christina Ricci playing Trixie and John Goodman as Pops are great calls).
I only hope the film doesn't take itself too seriously. If it goes down that path it can be disastrous (see Bewitched!). But if it makes light of the absurdity and nostalgia, it can definitely succeed (see Charlie's Angels).
I
can't wait 4 the movie. Besides, after the Matrix, them brothers can't do no wrong in my book. Yeah, I'm an absolute fan!
The Wachowskis
Nothing official...yet
Roc did a post about this earlier (link is above) so you can get the story there. For the moment, the official word is that Larry still is Larry.

The rumor is alive and well, however, so I guess we'll all know eventually!

Speed racer was my hero as child. I have fond memories of the cartoon. I won't go to the theater to see this movie or rent it either...it will come out on cable tv soon enough.
Does anyone remember 'Kimba the white Lion'...? I used to love that cartoon also...any clips out there?
Speed Racer - forever printed in my head
I was four, and it was 1967 and Speed Racer was my favorite cartoon on TV. One afternoon at my aunt's house I was outside playing by myself, while my mom was inside getting a hair permenant from my aunt. Anyway, there I am outside pretending I was Speedy, and singing at the top of my lungs while roaring around in my imaginary sports car, "Go Speed Racer! Go Speed Racer, Go SPEED RACER GO!!!!!!!!!!!" and having the time of my life. Well, my little fantasy came to an abrupt end when I tripped over a brick on the patio, and went head first into a piece of cast iron furniture and split my head open. My head bled like something out of the movie Sybil and I still remember to this day my whole face and little print dress being covered almost completely in blood while my mom and aunt tried to stem the flow of blood in the bathroom. My mom and aunt soon took my to the hospital (with my mom bitching about not getting a complete permenant) where we waited for a few hours until the doctors eventually sewed my head up, with me screaming my little head off as I was being held down by four nurses (they never told me what they were going to do!) Anyway, I still have a 2 inch scar on my forhead thanks to my obsession over Speed Racer. Will I see the movie? Probably? Do I want a cool car like the Super GT300? You betcha! :)
Mary Poppins forever on my lower lip...
I can relate to that slightly...
I was obsssesed with Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins when I was seven to the point I grabbed my grandma's umbrella one day. Climbed to the kitchen's worktop, opened the umbrella and jumped.
I gracefully hit with my upper jaw wide open against the opposing worktop in front of me and broke a tooth in half. The tooth pierced through my lower lip producing one interesting hole that had to be severely stitched later. Fortunately the scar grew smaller as I grew taller, and I had my tooth reconstructed with dental cements, but it's still noticeable right under it.
I have hated Julie Andrews since.
no. no thank you. movie

OKAY...
Watching Speed Racer as a child must be the seminal moment of becoming a lesbian...
Like a lot of you ladies, as soon as I got home from school I hit the TV and watched Speed Racer! Of course, it was in reruns at that point (circa 1982)...
I'll give it a chance...because if these guys are as ground breaking as they were with Bound (camera shots/plot)...and the Matrix...it should be one helluva ride!
Cool!
I use to love this cartoon when i was a kid. I don't know about the tone of the movie though, was said eariler the fun of the cartoon was the campyness of it.
Just have to check it out and see.
Those are awesome cars
I used to watch A LOT OF Speed Racer when I was a kid (here in Latin America the translation was Meteoro), but the anime was fairly old, must have been the 2nd or 3rd repetition on tv. I used to love that show, my brother and I always watched it (yes, I was a baby dyke back on 1995). And I also digged Captain Tsubasa (or Super Campeones, here in Latin America). Those were the two best old animes we watched, but Captain Tsubasa continued with new chapters and better graphics, the show was even sponsored by Adidas!
It's great that the movie is being made by the Wachowski brothers (even though I'm not a big Matrix fan, since I haven't seen much of the movies), but it would be great, judging from the trailer. And the cars! I LOVE CARS. And I love those cars!
