Sarah Michelle Gellar fans look forward to foursome

I miss Buffy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book. It’s smart, funny and has a lot of the same sensibilities as the TV show. But one crucial element simply cannot be captured on paper: the flesh-and-blood goodness of Sarah Michelle Gellar.

This is how dorky cute Gellar is. InStyle recently asked her, among others, to answer the question, “What’s sexy now?” I love her answer: “Sexy is what you make of it. A library is sexy if you’re in the right frame of mind.” Oh, to be a book in that library.

I’m always happy to hear of new SMG projects because I just know one of these days she’ll get a part in which she can prove herself to be the kick-butt actress we know she is. Or at least one that calls for her to be scantily clad. Oh, please. You were thinking the same thing. So, in the spirit of dewy-eyed optimism, here are Gellar’s upcoming films, in order of scheduled release date.

1. Southland Tales
We told you earlier this year about this futuristic thriller from Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly.

After Southland Tales got abysmal reviews at Cannes last year, Kelly obtained funding to punch up the special effects and rework the movie, now scheduled for a Nov. 9 release. Cinematical describes the film as a mix of sci-fi, comedy, music and drama. That sounds Buffyesque, doesn’t it? And check out this cast — SMG joins Mandy Moore, Dwayne Johnson (The Rock), Miranda Richardson, Seann William Scott, John Larroquette and Cheri Oteri. Interesting mix. Add the Donnie Darko factor and we have a winner. I hope.

No trailer yet, but look for it any day now. Meanwhile, take a look at this funny (and NSFW) clip of Gellar as adult film star Krysta Now. Looks like Southland might at least meet the scantily clad criterion. It also could be a breakout role for SMG.

2. The Air I Breathe
If a great cast guaranteed a great movie, The Air I Breathe would’ve been the talk of Tribeca when it premiered this spring. Besides Gellar, the film stars Forest Whitaker, Brendan Fraser, Kevin Bacon, Andy Garcia and Julie Delpy. Its four overlapping stories, told in the style made popular by Crash and Babel, are based on a Chinese proverb that breaks life down into happiness, pleasure, sorrow and love. So far, so good.

Alas, the reviews were not kind. Variety called it “morosely pretentious.” Cinemattraction said, “it’s a vacuous waste of an hour and a half.” Yikes. The House Next Door at least praised the performances, so maybe the film will be retooled before its U.K. release in December. They did change the poster, but, IMO, not for the better. What do you think?

3. Suburban Girl
Originally billed as The Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing, Suburban Girl also premiered at Tribeca. It stars Gellar as Brett, an associate book editor in her first job in New York City. Brett’s in over her head until she falls for publishing legend Archie Knox, played by Alec Baldwin. Archie introduces her to the glamorous side of literary Manhattan.

I know, the thought of Alec Baldwin and Sarah Michelle Gellar doing the nasty is kind of icky, but apparently, it works. The film’s reviews, while not dazzling, found the movie pleasant enough and predicted box office success.

We’ll never know if they were right, since Suburban Girl’s distributors have decided to take it directly to DVD for release next January. You don’t have to wait, however, to see how cute SMG looks in glasses.

4. Possession
The movie-formerly-known-as-Addicted falls squarely in the remade Asian horror movie genre that Gellar frequents. The plot has promise, though — Gellar plays a woman whose husband and his semi-sinister brother have a serious car accident that puts both in comas. The brother-in-law wakes up claiming that he was the one married to her — and he knows things only her husband could know. The trailer is sufficiently creepy to make me want to see more.

Possession will be released in February 2008.

I’m sure I’ll see Southland Tales, but the others sort of leave me lukewarm. What about you? Is SMG cuteness enough to make you see a movie? Which of these sound like the best fit for her? And what book would you be on Sarah Michelle’s shelf?

    all these movies where ment

all these movies where ment to hit theaters early spring 2007 but they didn't. Reason? They all suck. I love Sarah but damn she has always had bad taste when it came to the movies in which she will star in.

If it ant Buffy The Movie, or Scooby Doo 3 I ant interested.

    The Grudge?

I love The Grudge. I'll probably see Possession, but is it me or does that trailer not have sound?

Oddly enough (ducking) I've never found SMG to be that sexy. I mean she's pretty and she's a good actress...but when watching BtVS I couldn't help thinking Spike was sexier than Buffy. Which is very confusing for a lesbian. Luckily, there was always Willow to unconfuse me.

    Sound

The trailer doesn't have sound and the source site doesn't, either. (It did yesterday!) Thanks for the heads up.

Here's a different source - we'll get it fixed in the post asap. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2xrqy_addicted-bande-annonce_shortfilm...

    ditto

Feel the same way as you do about Buffy being cute, and Spike being oddly sexy. Though I always preferred Tara, Kennedy, and Anya overall :)

    Morosely pretentious much?

After the let-down that was The Return, I think I'll skip the new flicks and put on some old BTVS eps.  Or pick up the new Faithlicious issue of Buffy (the comic) Season 8.

    Love.Her.

    Totally love her.

FWIW, Air I Breathe was one of the most buzzed about flicks at Tribeca and actually got pretty good reviews overall from what I can remember. Obviously they weren't all great though as those snippets show. Performances themselves were reviewed as being good for Air, Suburban Girl and even Southland Tales where it was the script that was regarded as unweildy. Suburban Girl going to DVD is one of the weirdest decisions I've heard about in quite some time. Either the production company are a bunch of screwups, or they chickened out over the Alec Baldwin controversy because the film is good.

All it's going to take is one big film and SMG could really become a big deal in Hollywood. Hope it happens.

Oh god, Sarah is so hot. I

Oh god, Sarah is so hot. I love her. I love her a lot. Sarah fighting is a main reason I still enjoy Buffy, because I'm sorry, but girls kicking ass is supremely smoking.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Swoon

I actually came off a plane from London-LA a few years ago, and who was ahead of me in the passport control line and at the baggage carousel but SMG! Lord, she's tiny. Even with no make-up, in a knit watch cap, and after a 12 hour flight she still looked great. She was very funny at the carousel. She got excited that her bag was the first one off the plane and fairly squealed. Seth Green was on the flight too but I, ah, wasn't quite as engaged by him. He's really tiny too!

    I'd love to see...

SMG play a librarian. In those glasses. You know what they say: reading is sexy...

    Buffy

http://www.whedon.info/Buffy-Season-8-Comic-Book-Issue-7,23926.html just in case anyone wants spoilers for the season 8 issue 7 Buffy comic. It's the first six pages, and I'm sickly obsessed with it. I miss Buffy too.

    Yeah, we need Buffy back

SMG has never worn any other role as comfortably as she wore Buffy. I want to see her back in her Slayer skin.

    Cruel Intentions

I never cared much for SMG as Buffy despite being a big fan of the show.

I loved her in Cruel Intentions though *grin*

Ooh, me too. Love the movie,

Ooh, me too. Love the movie, but only because of her. Such a twisted, evil bitch. Amazing. And I don't care if it was exploitative or not, her kiss with Selma Blair was really hot. It was one of the first lesbian kisses I ever saw and I had no clue why it made me feel so funny on the inside. I figured it out pretty soon, though.

    Southland Tales

The first clip I saw from Southland Tales was this.  I couldn't stop laughing when she did that "zero, zero, zero" thing.

    My Own Notion

`My fantasy is to see her as a bisexual rookie detective chasing a serial killer. Will Smith would be billed first as her older partner dealing with burn-out but her story would be major too. A Dnaiel craig type as the serial killer because it's too small a part for Bond himself, LAuren Bacall as Gellar's grandmother whog ives her soem good advice. And, in a small but critically important role as SMG"s exasperated schoolteacher girlfriend, who's so tired of the "go away a little closer" stuff in their relationship she takes a summer job out of state, Amber Benson. I have this scene in mind with them in translucent footless catsuits . . . unfortunately I don't write either screenplays or mysteries.

Seriously puzzled about _Suburban Girl_; it hardly seems like the "type" of movie that would go direct-to-DVD. Which means it probably by definition can't be a break-out role for her. Plus Driect-to-DVDs aren't given much reviews in the dailies so elss visibility there. Plus I don't own a TV so I won't be seeing it, which si a bit hypocritical since if it weren't SMG the movie wouldn't interest me.

_The AIr I bReathe_ sounds, well, kinda spooky, in a good way tho.

    Interesting

The first moments of that Southland Tales Clip made me think she'd be the Patrick Swayze of the film. I'll definately try to get my hands on that film and not just because Sarah's in it. Donnie Darko is one of my alltime favourite movies so i'm really curious what crazy brilliantness Richard pulled out of his hat this time.

Until that glorious day comes, i'll be re-re-re-re-re-rewatching season 6.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is ridiculously attractive!

I made fun of Buffy in high school until I watched it, then I was hooked.  I think you almost have to see her as Buffy to get it.  I wasn't attracted to her until I watched that show and then she became this icon of the perfect female in my eyes.  She's so charismatic and intelligent.  I also like that she doesn't mince words in her interviews.  She's unafraid and unapologetic, which can't be said for most actresses who strive to be liked, if not adored by all.  I don't always agree with what she's saying, but I love her confidence and conviction.  A smart, quirky, beautiful woman like her will always have my attention.

I'll go to anything she's in to show support.  I'm a very loyal fan.  I like the premise of "Possession"; creepy thrillers are right up my alley.  I was a little disappointed to hear "Suburban Girl" is going straight to DVD.  I hope Hollywood continues to recognize her talent.  I also hope she kisses another woman on film sometime soon.  "Cruel Intentions" can't be the end, it felt so much like a beginning.  That may have been the moment I really knew I liked girls.  I'm sure I'm not alone.
