Samurai Girl: Heaven for female action fans

ABC Family has ordered a pilot for a new drama that gives me hope for the kind of female kick-ass action we haven't seen since Alias and Buffy left the air. The show, Samurai Girl, is based on the popular young adult book series by Carrie Asai (not to be confused with the Samurai Girl manga and anime series).

The pilot is based on the first book in the series, Samurai Girl: The Book of the Sword, which tells the story of Heaven, a girl rescued from a plane crash and adopted by a wealthy family headed by not-so-upstanding businessman, Konishi Kogo. The real action starts at Heaven's wedding, an arranged marriage that will unite the Kogo family with another powerful Japanese family. During the ceremony, a ninja assassin attacks, killing Heaven's brother Ohiko as he fights to protect her. Heaven runs away and begins to train as a samurai – in L.A. – in order to exact revenge on her brother's killer. If Heaven's bloody wedding motivates her half as much as Uma Thurman's did in Kill Bill, we're in for quite a ride.

How evil is her father? What is his real business? Why does her mother turn a blind eye to her father's questionable activities? What really happened in that diner when the screen went dark? Oh, wait.

Actually, this series has real potential. Luke McMullen, who wrote the pilot, worked on Alias. And the quality of Kyle XY reassures me that ABC Family can produce a worthwhile drama. We'll just overlook Greek for the moment. The prospect of an Asian heroine is certainly appealing, given the dearth of strong female (or male, for that matter) Asian characters on television. An editorial review on amazon.com describes the book as “cinematic and sarcastic” and says Heaven is “American-culture and film-obsessed.” I like it already.

Shooting begins this fall, so the next step is casting. Devon Aoki (D.E.B.S) comes to mind.

Or Rinko Kikuchi (Babel).

Both have sword-fighting skills and probably can pass for 19. Who else? I've been racking my brain trying to think of young Asian actresses. The fact that I've only come up with two shows how badly we need this show to be great.

Have you read any of the Samurai Girl books? If so, what you think about turning it into a TV show? And who should play Heaven? If it's someone we don't know, post a picture. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

    Zhang Ziyi? Chiaki Kuriyama?

I know Zhang is Chinese instead of Japanese but that usually doesn't stop film makers, after all, Zhang Ziyi did play a geisha. Plus she has amazing on screen sword skills and Chiaki 'Gogo' Kuriyama is just a beautifully wrapped ball of insanity.

I loved Devon Aoki in D.E.B.S and even Sin City (she didn't have any lines!) but did anybody see D.O.A? That awful excuse for a movie with Holly Valance as some wannabe badass martial artist? Devon was terrible in it, well... everyone was terrible in it.

I read one or two of these books a while ago and loved them, I'm really looking forward to the series but I just hope they don't mess up the casting!

    Yes!

    I can't believe I forgot Kuriyama! Outstanding.

    Gogo? YESYES!

Of course! It has to be her!

    Check out her: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiaki_Kuriyama

and her insane alter ego: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gogo_Yubari

if the woman can wield a nasty metal ball-on-a-chain then I'm pretty sure she can turn her hand to a samurai sword!

*has just bought a Samurai sword on ebay, oddly enough*

    absolutely...

Chiaki Kuriyama. There's no other acceptable choice. Battle Royale got it right - she is the coolest girl in the world.

    Park

Believe it or not, Grace Park is 33. Might be a bit of a stretch to play 19. Love her, though.

    Chiaki Kuriyama

Chiaki Kuriyama would be a cool choice. The success of this show, however, will depend on what mood it takes. What made Kill Bill so great was that it didn't take itself too seriously and had alot of fun with the characters and dialogue. If they play it completely straight, they better have a heck of a good writer otherwise we could end up with another Painkiller Jane.

    Chiaki, Devon & Quentin

I say they cast Chiaki Kuriyama or Devon Aoki and Quentin Tarantino should be involved with the project, it would be so kick booty lol

    Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

    yes!

I love the plot already. It's so brave a girl who leaves her normal life to become a samurai!

I am looking forward to knowing more about this show.

    Kuriyama Chiaki

She was in Kill Bill, Azumi and Battle Royale!

My other suggestions would be Ueto Aya and Shibasaki Kou (who Tarantino also wanted for Kill Bill along with her Battle Royale co-star).

Among them, Kuriyama is the most feasible choice cause IMDB (how reliable lol) says she's learning English.
