Rudy from "The Cosby Show" is all grown upKeshia Knight Pulliam was 5 when she read for the part of Rudy Huxtable on The Cosby Show. At her audition, she kept looking away from the director, who finally asked her what she was looking at. "That's me," she said, pointing at the monitor. "How can you make me on the TV?"
Aw. That's the Keshia I want to remember. Little Rudy — smart as a whip and cute as a bug — or a goldfish.
Sure, I know that the actor and her character are two different people. I know that it's been over 15 years since The Cosby Show's original run. I know Pulliam turned 29 a few weeks ago. When I see pictures like this, I can deal with her growing up. You can still see a little of Rudy in her, can't you? Pulliam at the 39th NAACP Image Awards on Feb. 14, 2008 But pictures like this one, in which Pulliam clearly is trying to get as far away from Rudy as she can, make me wish I surfed the net a little less and watched reruns a little more.
I can almost hear Clair: "March up to your room right now, young lady, and put on the rest of your clothes." The Huxtables also would not be pleased with Pulliam's next role: a prostitute in Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail. Pulliam appeared in a 2006 episode of House of Payne, one of the latest unfunny attempts to clone The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and she and Perry apparently hit it off. Although it's not my cup of tea, Perry's Madea franchise attracts a healthy box office, and I understand why Pulliam would want the visibility. But the plot does not exactly make me wish the movie well: "The Lionsgate comedy centers on Madea (Perry), whose penchant for trouble-making lands her behind bars. She comes to the rescue of Candy (Pulliam), a fellow inmate preyed upon by a large woman named Big Sal." While I have no objection in principle to stories about lesbians in prison, I'm not too keen on Rudy playing a hooker in a homophobic movie. Am I overreacting? Is Perry's movie a good career move for Pulliam? Or does she think she signed up for a movie version of another Phylicia Rashad role, Medea? Hey, I'm trying to give Keshia the benefit of the doubt here. Submitted by on April 23, 2008 - 3:00pm. |

1st of all
Tyler Perry movies are not that great. They are all tv specials placed on a big screen, and Im always left thinking, this is too much too fast or, the acting sucks, or wha? Not trying to rag on Tyler Perry and his impressive accomplishments...But I'll go see his plays anyday anytime of the week..but his movies...no ma'am (i might be the only black person that has this opinion) And it has always bothered me that Tyler Perry is writing from a "black woman victim perspective" which can come off at times stereotypical and overdramatic...hmm sorta like a drag queen? Anywhoo..I spend money and support his plays, so I can say anything I wnt
2nd Keshia Knight Pulliam is fine as hell all grown up. And as her sorority sister Im bound to support her in all her trials and efforts regardless of what role she plays in...BUT I'm not sure I want to see her play bottom to Big Sal either
Oh my....
She did grow up into a lovely lady. I never really liked Tyler's stuff and I do not plan on watching his plays either.
Rudy All Grown Up
Obviously you haven't seen her in Beautyshop where she plays a womyn who plays men. She was so fine in that. It's hard for child stars to come to their own when they grow up. I just hope she bypasses sterotypical roles and go for the good ones in the near future.
Grown Child Stars 101
What Keisha is doing is no different from what Drew Barrymore did when she first came back on the scene: get as far away from the child character, so people can see you for what you are today.
Think about Drew's last few movies... they're a far cry from "Poison Ivy" which had tongues wagging when it came out.
As for Perry and "Big Sal" one thing I can say about his movies--they may be mediocre in some ways, but they are always better than I thought they'd be. Let's give him--and Keisha--some credit. We can talk more when it comes out.

Lamont!
Aw, I love the screen shot of Cliff, Rudy and the fishbowl -- poor Lamont, dead goldfish. Such a cute episode. I always appreciated the fact that Keshia K-P was adorable but relatable and at least somewhat genuine as a child actor. Contrast that to Raven-Symone, who was cloying and fakey-fake precocious as Olivia. (She seems to have some real talent now, but boy, she was crazy annoying as a little kid. To me, anyway.)
You know, I'm not sure I would be thrilled with any actor playing lez-bait for some big ol' prison mama. I mean, what a lame side plot.
Not that Excited
you said...
lez-bait.
that's funny.
heeheehee.

Tyler Perry's movies
Tyler Perry's movies generally revolve around the same storyline. Succesful black woman get scourned by a man, becomes hard to the world and doesn't see the wonderful blue collar black man in front of her. Add some gun totting and cursing by Madea and you have 90% of the movies he has produced. I'm tired of seeing this storyline. I agree with shedetective that his writing and work should remain on stage where overacting and audacious stunts are accepted. The plays don't really translate well on screen (ie. meet the browns..... I want my money and time back for that movie!).
I am proud of Tyler Perry and what he has done for black cinema. He has brought the figure of a positive black man into the forefront (is that spelled right). He is also big on uplifting and strengthening the black family. However the acting in the movies can be quite poor, and the writing can be a little preachy. I have seen ALL of his movies, and most of the plays so I figured I can express an informed opinion in this matter.
I don't think this a good career move for Keisha if she is trying to set her career in a upward direction. Unfortunately mainstream Hollywood already looks down on black cinema as like a subgroup. The eccentric nature of the Madea franchise doesn't help (I am aware it is supposed to be catering to an urban crowd). So if she is just trying to get some work, and possibly get stuck in the go nowhere circle of sterotypical black movies/straight to dvd movies then this is a great career move for her. Good luck to Keisha either way.
I apologize for this being so long, but I am avoiding paying attention in my embryology class.who knows?
who knows if this will actually invigorate her career? i doubt it, since when i think of other perry madea alumni (shemar moore, kimberly elise, god--i don't even know the other actresses names who were in madea's family reunion), none of their careers seem to have skyrocketed. kimberly elise is here and there in solid supporting roles, though.
raven symone was super annoying as olivia.
i'll be a die-hard fan of denise aka lisa bonet forever, even though the last movie i saw her in was 'biker boyz,' which came out years ago. which leads me to how very attractive sally richardson was in that movie playing a lesbian. how my mind wanders. lol.
