Poor ratings threaten "Life" as we know it

Life is good. In fact, it has become one of my must-see shows this season. Sure, I started watching for the same reason most of you did: Sarah Shahi.

I wasn’t entirely true to the show during Season 1 — until the writers’ strike. But once I started watching the episodes in succession online, I was hooked.

To my chagrin, however, I seem to be one of only a small number of loyal viewers. And unless more people start watching, Life is over.

Did I mention that Sarah Shahi is on this show? And that she plays a cop?

I’m not above appealing to your baser nature if it gets you to watch the show. But Life has a lot more going for it than just a hot female cop. In fact, AfterEllen.com has learned that this week, the show will have a hot guest star who happens to be one of our favorite honorary lesbians: Marvelous Maeve Quinlan.

No word yet as to exactly what Maeve’s role is, but do we care?

Honestly, though, I would watch the show even without hot women — even at 10 p.m. on a Friday night. (What? You have a social life? I have one word for you: DVR.)

Here’s the premise: Charlie Crews (Damian Lewis) is a police detective who spent 12 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Even though he has been cleared and received a multimillion-dollar settlement, he rejoins the force hoping to find out who framed him. During his time in prison, Det. Crews adopted a Zen philosophy and learned prison survival skills, making him an odd match for his impatient, by-the-book partner, Dani Reese (Shahi). Reese has some reputation rebuilding of her own to do, since she has just returned from rehab for drug addiction. Oh, and Reese’s father may be one of the bad cops who set up Crews.

This may sound a little convoluted, but great writing makes it work. Crews is quirky, but not predictable. Reese is cynical, but not hard-hearted. Instead of the usual mismatched partner cop show, we get stories that are rich and resonant — and we’re never quite sure what Crews and Reese will do.

Obviously, I’m very pro-Life, and think it’s a shame that formulaic shows like CSI and Criminal Minds are getting more viewers every week, while a much better and smarter show is at risk of being canceled.

Besides, Life has Sarah Shahi and those other shows don’t.

Will you help make sure Life goes on? Tune in to NBC on Friday nights at 10pm.

    Kinda sad that the writer's

Kinda sad that the writer's strike may end up killing this show. It got good ratings last season and was starting to gain a following... the strike stopped it dead in its tracks. I hope ratings pick up. I like the show and am eagerly waiting on more clues :D.

Life has to go on! it's one of the coolest shows on tv. like you said, smarter, better than many of these other shows that have viewers galore. damn.... :(

    NOOOO!

Life is probably my favorite show out there right now. How can this be? How can an great show like this be in trouble when Law & Order is still on with boring dialogue and stories we've seen before? It's not right.

    Nelson box

They really need to put a nelson ratings box  in every tv set. This way they will know for sure what we are watching. Instead of letting a few select people rate the shows that they watch.

There are always dumb blonde jokes all the time. But what they dont know is we just play dumb to get what we want. And it always works. LOL

    The Problem

"Life" this season has minimalized the female hot tough cops' roles on the show. Sure, Shahi still looks hot, but that's not good enough. She has to tase swimming pools with her partner in it, too.

What of the future of Lt. Karen Hot-and-Kinda-Butch? She appeared in the last episode, at least, but again it was the male character that saved the day, and the female that only got to sneer.

    Vanessa V.'s picture

    Lt. Karen Davis

She was in the last ep?? Damn... Now I have to see it.

After watching the 1st ep of the 2nd season, and realizing that they "demoted" Lt. Karen and replaced her with that sexist pig who spent the whole ep commenting on how hot Reese looked... I just stopped watching.

Yes, I'm on the Sarah Shahi drooling fan train, but ever since I saw Deadwood (an HBO deceased series) with Robin Weigert playing Calamity Jane... I'm just a fan of hers for life.

Seeing Robin and Sarah interact with eachother was the best part of this series. Now it's over, and I'm bailing out. *shrugs*

I love this show, I too got

I love this show, I too got into it by watching it online this summer after I broke my foot. It really is a great show, and I've been watching it on the NBC website, at least that way it'll actually matter if I watch it, and besides, I have no tv.

    ps Sarah  Shahi is amazing

    Oh my...

Isn't it sad that less interesting shows always get better ratings? And isn't it even sadder that not even Sarah Shahi (who looks so insanely hot as Dani Reese, I might add) can help that? Unfortch there's not a lot us Europeans can do about it but trust me, I will pray every night for the continuation of this show... (and not only because Sarah Shahi's stomach in Life is about the sexiest thing I've ever seen on TV.)

    Another pro-Life-r

Geez! I can't believe I just typed that, but it is true. Thanks to Sarah Warn I have latched onto another well done TV show ;) I do think it is in a class by itself. Solid writing and great acting has me coming back for more. Plus, Sarah Shahi is easy on the eyes. Oh, those tank tops, aviators, etc.... Anyhoo, everyone needs to jump on the Life train!! Woot, Woot!!

PS Yay, Maeve! I can't wait.

    debjordan's picture

    hate to say it

but didn't the l word wrap last week?
    A Muse's picture

    ...

TLW has some of the worst writing. besides Shahi knows she has the lesbians on board for her career. no need to go back to TLW. btw, they did wrap start of october returning to LA for pickups and exteriors ;)

    hot scene S02E02

In the second episode of season 2, there is a scene where Sarah Shahi's character is with another women almost undressed. It's not a sex scene but it kinda remember me of Sarah Shahi's character con the l word....super hot camen, anyway...you should watch the show because it's really interesting and Sarah Shahi is an amazing hot actress.

Say it ain't so! I love

    Say it ain't so!

I love this show and have recently become addicted to it. When I first saw the preview for season 1 I thought it was going to be lame and didn't bother watching it. Plus I didn't think that Sarah shahi's character could be any hotter then when she played Carmen de la pica morales. Well, it's true no other role will compare to that of te L owrd but I just watched season 1 online last month and absolutely love this show! I hate that it's on fridays but love that you can watch it online. Spead the word! Save the show!

    Please pump up the ratings!!

    For Life

There's a share of blame to go around for any slide in Life's ratings--certainly the writers' strike played a role, but also NBC's interest in running additional seasons of American Gladiators rather than rerun the first season of this great show and the decision to change its timeslot. This is a great show and you put it on Friday? You're just asking for lackluster ratings.

I will say, though...if Shahi's character ends up sleeping with her new boss, I think the show will lose one more viewer. I can understand the allure of Tony Soprano, but that guy? Don't even go there.

    **SPOILER**

I read an interview in TV guide, she does sleep with him, and she falls off the wagon too. So maybe she isn't in her right mind when she does?

    time slot for life

Has this show ever had a decent time slot? So far this season they've been shuffling it around, but I guess it finally settled into late friday night. It never surpises me to hear about a show doing poor in the ratings when they put it on at weird times or change the time slot too much. It's like they don't want to give it a chance
    Natazzz's picture

    Well...

I like Life, but I don't really think it's that good.

I certainly do not think it is much better than other shows like CSI.

    noooo!

i just started getting in to this show! it can't be cancelled before i find out that reese's dad is guilty (i don't know that, but homeboy sure acts guilty all the time). as a rule, i hate cop shows like csi, law and order, and all of their offshoots, but this show is different! plus, carmen is in it!

    Naah...

You had me at first with all the great arguments til you started dissin' my favorite shows. Not hot! I totally love CSI (now for three episodes when Sara's back) and Criminal Minds is my biggest obsession after Grey's Anatomy (of course).

I'd watch the show to see if I liked it IF THEY JUST COULD AIR ALLTHE GOOD SHOWS OVER HERE!

    Thanks for the heads up

I've never seen this show, but will definitely check it out now.

    What?!?!

I watch every week. I love this show. It's awesome. I'll be so sad if this show is cancelled. Sarah Shahi needs to stay in a holster. I love it.

    Not Again...

Here in Oz it seems to be rating fairly well (it doesn't hurt that it's shown straight after House I guess) and I love this show. I hope it doesn't go the same way as Arrested Development, which apparently just got the run around too many times and whichever American network it was on dropped it, even though the ratings here were HUGE.

Sarah Shahi is hot. Very. And Damian Lewis is pulling off Crews so nicely at the moment... My one beef with the new season is that Chuck the Paramedic from ER is their boss now? I honestly think Reese is gonna deck him coz he's a deadset sleazebag.

~Can't everything be like before when it overcomes me?~

    countrycomfort's picture

    The Allure...

...of Sarah was also the reason for my initially watching this show. But I love the show regardless of her presence. I actually think she is a more than competant actress and not just a hot specimen of the female of the species.

It just really irks me that the networks pull out all the stops for the Heroes, Grey's and realities of the world (not to belittle Heroes and Grey's. I like both shows.) and yet  shows like this and American Dreams are treated like afterthoughts. I realize America's viewing habits have evolved with DVR's and Internet viewings but the summer was a perfect time to replay S1 even if it was on USA.

As far as NBC airing Life on Mondays this season, they were keeping the spot warm for Christian Slater's show and at the same time exposing Life during the week b/c they KNOW Fridays are a death sentence for most shows. But even here they dropped the ball by not doing mad pub for it. It just makes me feel that the suits don't really care. I know PR costs money but you have to try to make a critically acclaimed show with passionate viewers, a success.   I just hope we can get 13 episodes out of this year so we can have a dvd set.

It would also be nice for  television producers and the suits at NBC to realize the find they have in Sarah Shahi. She is a draw for those who appreciate a sexy woman. Hopefully this will be her biggest break in the biz.

    I Love Life!!!!

    I LOVE LIFE

I have to speak up in

I have to speak up in defense of Criminal Minds.  It's a pretty good show that goes deeper than "team catches serial killers, rinse, repeat."  There's good characters, intriguing storylines, the occasional thoughtful moment, and sprinkles of humor.  Each of the team members is supposed to be paralleled by a character from Arthurian legend, which sets up some interesting metatextual discussions regarding their behavior and ultimate fates.  I'd say I love it about equally as much as I love Life.  And, CM has Paget Brewster and AJ Cook bringing some Shahi-esque levels of hotness, and there's an equal likelihood that they'll also get to bring out the kevlar and gunplay.

    that's why

ohhhhhh THAT's why it wasn't on monday...when did this switch happen?
    Melissa Hsu's picture

    Initially, I was gonna

Initially, I was gonna watch this show anyway, but seeing Shahi as part of the cast was a definite plus. Something about her with a gun, a badge, and a kick ass attitude.......

SS is great, but the women who play Crews' ex-wife and the lawyer are also a treat (two treats). So that's 3 and good things come in three's.....like Neopolitan Ice Cream.

    Why, NBC? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

    Melissa Hsu's picture

    We also love

Jessi and i  also love Crews' ex wife too. She is our reason for watching it.

Edit: actually I should say Jessi likes crews' ex more then I do.

There are always dumb blonde jokes all the time. But what they dont know is we just play dumb to get what we want. And it always works. LOL

    i hope

I hope Life keeps going. I started watching because of Shahi too but then, I love the brother-sister kinda relationship between Shahi's character and D. Lewis' character.

the dialogue's well written. and right, Shahi...hellloooo!

    debjordan's picture

    it's the network's fault

Everyone is confused with all the different timeslots- I've been watching it on line...do they count that?

    I hope it stays!!

    NBC killed this show, not

NBC killed this show, not the writers strike. They were so focused on Heroes and their new shows (new Christian Slater and the awful new Knight Rider) that they never advertised Life. A crap campaign plus a death sentence time slot will kill any show.

Plus, NBC should know that Friday at 10 is BATTLESTAR GALACTICA hour! [...not that it's on right now. But it will be!]

    Yay Maeve!!

I've loved this show from the beginning (I must be one of the few other loyal fans) but I didn't realize it was struggling so much. I can't wait to see Maeve though.

    A Possibility.....

Tonight NBC is airing the 2 hour premiere of Crusoe. It got an excellent review in the NY Daily News...4 stars. If this show is a "hit" then as a lead in to Life it could be a thumbs up for more Life.

Watching Crusoe now. Hope I like it.
