Pam Grier brings on the bad in "Smallville"

Finally, a TV producer remembered that Pam Grier deserves better than a variation on the line “Don’t mess with me, girl.”

According to EW’s Ausiello, the inimitable blaxploitation badass will join the cast of Smallville as Dr. Amanda Blake Waller (no relation to Miss Kitty), #60 on IGN’s list of Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time.

Amanda “The Wall” Waller has been part of the DC Universe since Legends #1 and rose to power as the head of Task Force X/Suicide Squad a covert team of former supervillains who do dirty work for the government in exchange for amnesty. She became Secretary of Metahuman Affairs during Lex Luthor’s presidential administration.

No word yet on The Wall’s storyline, but it will start with the second half of January’s two-part “Justice Society” episode. I have little doubt that massive ass kicking — and hotness — will be involved.

If you haven’t watched Smallville lately — and, admittedly, I gave up a couple of seasons ago — you are missing a fun season. I had a private catch-up marathon not long ago and found myself remembering why the show used to be a guilty pleasure. With the promise of Grier joining the cast, looks like I have yet another Friday night TV dilemma.

Who still watches Smallville? Are you pumped by the prospect of Pam Grier as The Wall? What’s next: Kelly Lynch as Nightshade?

    More than just a villain

will admit that I don't watch Smallville except when I hear Black Canary is in an episode, as I'm in love with Dinah Lance. But I am a DC comics fan, and I think it's unfair to call this character "DC comics villain 'The Wall'" - It's not a villain identity in the same way as Two-Face, Deathstroke and Mr. Freeze are. It's a nickname applied to her by the occasional characterand not an 'official' pseudonym.

The reason I make the distinction is because Amanda Waller is not just another villain. She's a complex, shades-of-grey character (I'd nominate her as 'greyest character in the DCU')  who more often than not ends up on the 'right' side by virtue of working for the Government against threats to the status quo.

Suicide Squad is for my taste one of the best titles DC has produced, and is tragically unavailable in trades. I'm hoping a raised profile for Waller in Smallville and in the rumoured upcoming Suicde Squad movie will recitfy this.

    Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is for my taste one of the best titles DC has produced, and is tragically unavailable in trades.

I was fortunate enough to buy them all as they came out, but surely it's not that difficult or expensive to put together a set from the cheapo bins at your local comic mart? It's very, very good but also not much sought after by the average post-Image comics fan. Also, there's a one-shot revival of the title by Ostrander coming out in the next coupla months as part of Blackest Night.

Hmm, it's about time I reread SUICIDE SQUAD - must drag them out of storage. Last series I reread from start-to-finish was PLANETARY. Ten bloody years to produce 27 issues (and three x-over specials), but it may well be writer Warren Ellis' masterpiece. And who do we think should play Jakita Wagner if PLANETARY is ever filmed?Personally I keep seeing her as Jennifer Garner.

Oh, I have  access to the issues, I just

    a) prefer reading trades rather than floppies

    b) would like to give my new-to-comics friends trades of the title and tell them 'read this', the same way I have done (with great success) with Birds of Prey and Secret Six.

And I already have the revival reserved for me, because that and The Question are the only Blackest Night tie-ins I'm actively excited for.

    Fair enough

I'm not sure exactly the phrasing you're referring to, but you're absolutely right that "The Wall" is not a reference to her persona as it is for other supervillians in the DC Universe. Thanks for clarifying!

I don't know much about DC

I don't know much about DC comics and I have no idea who "The Wall" is, but yep I still watch the show and it has been pretty good lately!

    NO!!!

    No! No! No! No! No!

Just when "Smallville" had begun to redeem itself, this bit of casting news comes out. I thought I was finished with Pam Grier when that horrible show about those ridiculous lesbians ended.

If her moment in the "Smallville" sun only lasts a single episode, then I'll suffer through; any longer and I boycott.

Either way, her portrayal of The Wall had better be a little less Kit, a little more Foxy Brown. Please.

    ~~Lois and Clark!~~

    Yeah, I still watch

Yeah, I still watch Smallville. And I will continue to watch until there's a series finale. I am enjoying the story so far this season. Plus is doesn't hurt seeing Cassidy Freeman (Tess) and those lovely green eyes.

The addition of Pam Grier won't affect my viewing habits, but good for her.

    Gave up

Watching last year.  It wasn't so much that the storylines were poor, but it clashed with something else so I had to cancel the recording.  Oh, it was Survivor and ER.

But I really hated the damn Chole/Jimmy relationship.  I mean, seriously, that was agonizing to watch.  He was such a one-dimensional boring character.  Then whenClark had Chole's memory wiped I was over it.  That was the only really interesting thing that happened over the last few seasons.

Maybe I'll catch up on some reruns and try to catch Pam on,  but I doubt it.

Yes, I still watch Smallville coz I enjoy the love-hate relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

Anyhoo, is it just me or Clark and Oliver Queen has some gay subtext going on there? LOL! Everytime they're talking, I always have a feeling that after their chat, they're going to just kiss. LOL!

So, Pam Grier's gonna be on Smallville eh? Sweet! Yeah, I agree w/ what was said above, we should all hear her say "baby grrrlll!" LOL! :)

    Guuurrrlll meets Superman... and lives?

Yes, I have been watching "Smallville" since Day One, and am continually amazed at how drastically the show has changed over the years.  The only original cast members left are Tom Welling (Clark Kent/Superman) and Allison Mack (Chloe).  They got rid of Pete (Clark's black friend in high school), Lex Luthor (the brilliant Michael Rosenbaum), Lex's father Lionel (John Glover), Lana Lang (the vibrant Kristin Kreuk), and Clark's parents (Annette O'Toole and John Schneider).

Not only have they gotten rid of a lot of great characters, but all of the adults have disappeared from the show.  If you are an adult on a CW show, boy, are your days numbered.

So, since this show already jumped the shark years ago, the addition of Pam Grier won't hurt or help.  However, since she is an adult, she won't be on the show for long, maybe a few episodes.  Callum Blue (from Showtime's "Dead Like Me"), who is playing the Kryptonian villian General Zod, won't last long either.  It is too bad that we live in such a youth-obsessed culture.  There are so many fine actors and actresses in their 40s and 50s, but they are mostly reduced to playing somebody's mother or father, which is ridiculous.

At least the eye candy on this show remains compelling...  I miss Kristin Kreuk, but Erica Durance (Lois Lane) doesn't hurt my eyes, if you know what I mean.
