News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Our favorite fictional females who don’t take crap from anybody

News of how ABC is wimping out on some of its strongest women characters reminded me of a list The Park Bencher recently compiled of “Twelve Fictional Females Who Don’t Take Crap From Anybody.” This seems like a good day to remind ourselves of such characters that have both survived and thrived onscreen — and to give us incentive to demand more from film and television producers.

Here are some of my favorites from the list.

Princess Leia, Star Wars

Leia may have needed a better hair stylist, but she was the voice of reason in Star Wars. She survived Vader’s torture and Han Solo’s attitude. Without her, the Empire would’ve been little more than Egos in Space. With her, the Federation refused to lose — and she won most of her battles wearing little more than gold lamé underwear.

Maude, Harold and Maude

Harold and Maude is my favorite movie. Of. All. Time. It, quite literally, changed my world. And Maude’s love of life and refusal to give in to societal expectations for a “woman of a certain age” are big reasons why. We tend to overlook her strength — she was a Holocaust survivor — because she is such an eccentric. I defy anyone to name a character with more courage.

Sarah Connor, The Terminator

Sure, we love Lena Headey’s version of Connor, but nothing can beat the original, the kick-ass, cut heroine played by Linda Hamilton. I was warm for her form, but it was her fighting spirit that really inspired me. If only Sarah Connor could run for Governor of California.

Liz Lemon, 30 Rock

The real power of Liz Lemon is often hidden behind smart girl glasses and bi-curious shoes. But Lemon can match wits with geeks and NBC studio heads in the same half-hour. And even when she succumbs to a bout of drunk dialing, she’s smart enough to know that the only opinion of her that matters is her own.

Take a look at the rest of the list and let us know what you think. Who are your favorite take-no-crap women? How can we keep strong women characters on TV and film?

    Xena!

Why is Xena always left off of these lists?  And Gabrielle for that matter.  Talk about 2 women who didn't take crap from anyone.

    YES SARAH CONNOR!

    No Xena

WTF?????? Xena beat the hell out of the entire Persian army ALONE, killed gods and came back from the dead more than once :-O You just don't get any more badassed than that!
    Contraryone's picture

    Oh yes

Xena definitely should be on the list. I'm also wondering - what about Ellen Ripley?
    wickedgrrl's picture

    twisted but...

Roseanne Connor from back in the day.  Sad but she was my hero on the "don't take crap" front as a kid.  Well, her and Darlene.  Heck for that matter, Darlene Connor could be on this list.

Then of course there was She-Ra: Princes of Power.

The ladies of Charmed also come to mind.  Mostly, Pru and Piper cause the other two took a lot of crap.

Rita Lee Lance from Silk Stalkings still has to be one of my favorite female cops.  Not sure if she belongs on this list but its still nice to remember the smile, the eyes, the shoulder pads.

Oh.  Evil Willow and Faith also come to mind.  I'd say the Buffster, but I think she took a lot of crap that say Faith walked away from or defied.

    mustang_sally's picture

    Trinity

never took ANY crap--not even from the guy she loved. She blatantly told Neo to go to hell if he had a problem with her decision....being the sexy ranking officer that she is.

She is the epitome of badass-ness.

    My initial thoughts:

    Lorelai Gilmore

    Veronica Mars

Buffy/Willow/Faith/Anya - all the BtVS female characters seem gutsy

    Cuddy (from House)

Ashley Davies (actually, Spencer as well I think..)

    RIPLEEEYYY!

Why is Sigourney Weaver always forgotten and under-rated! Ellen Ripley doesn't take it from nobody!

That's to name but a few of her characters who aren't interested in other people's BS ^_^

    Captain Janeway!

You just have to love her no-nonsense-screw-the-Temporal-Prime-Directive-and-keep-the-hot-Borg-around attitude. With all those awsome ladies in space today she gets sadly and undeservedly overlooked.

For further proof just check the reasons why she rocks WAY more than Picard.

    My favourites are:

    25. Three words: Compression Phaser Rifles.

    52. Doesn't need her first officer's permission to blow up her ship.

    72. Q asked Janeway to run away with him and she refused. Q asked Picard's girlfriend to run away with him and she accepted.

-> I imagine I know the answer to what would have happened had Janeway asked Picards girlfriend to elope with her... ;)

    Melissa Hsu's picture

Once again you see me baffled.

A list of "fictional females who don't take crap from anybody" and no Xena and Gabby to be found anywhere? You must be kidding me.

Relax ladies, Ripley is on the list.

I would also add 7of9, Janeway, Major Kira, Scully, Wonder Woman, Miss Croft (the rendered original, not the Angelina version), and Joanna Black.

I would not include Leia. She didn't really kick ass in my eyes.

Whoever rigged up this list, The Force was obviously not with him/her.

"I imagine I know the answer to what would have happened had Janeway asked Picards girlfriend to elope with her..." I guess we all know that answer, don't we? ;)

edit: Uh, forgot a few. Mara Jade (who could resist a woman wielding a purple Lightsaber?), StarCaptain Joanna, MechWarrior Diana Pryde and Khan Marthe Pryde of Clan Jade Falcon, Founder Alicia Tseng of Clan Ghost Bear. OK, that was probably too nerdy. Sorry.

My hopes are pinned on Mad Men

It's so sad that most of my favorite tough fictional females are off the air by now.  I was thinking Buffy, and even her crazy counterpart Faith, and Veronica Mars.

And how about the original 'maverick', President MacKenzie Allen from the wonderful and all-too-brief Commander-in-Chief ?!  It was all I could do to keep myself from writing in Geena Davis' name on my ballot today.

I worry that the only way we can keep our strong female characters on tv is by making sure that the ladies, queers, and the people of color get in there and push for both quality and diverse writing and programming!  And we need fairminded executives -- people who won't get 'cold feet' about a gay storyline (ABC, I'm looking in your direction...I don't even like GA, but it's still infuriating).  I'm afraid we just have to get in there ourselves.

I think that there's hope though -- because of AMC's Mad Men.  That show has a male producer/creator -- but he's clearly devoted to producing a good show with good characters, and he's hired excellent writers (some of whom wrote for BtVS) and actresses.  Betty, Joan, and Peggy are flawed, and very vulnerable, and all struggling to get by (in different ways) in super patriarchal worlds -- but I think they're all on the way to some serious empowerment.  Can't wait to see what happens in season 3.

    Strong Women

The characters that I loved as a kid (and who my mother would say made me gay):

    Ellen Ripley from Alien

    Sarah Connor from Terminator

Reba Mcyntire's character from Tremors, lol

We were a B-movie watchin' family! Which must be why I love seeing a woman shooting an automatic weapon...except in the case of Sarah Palin.

    Xena for sure!

Xena definitely should have been on there. Linda Hamilton was my first crush although I didn't realize I was crushing because I was like 8 or something.

Also, Carrie Anne Moss as Trinity from the Matrix...

    Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil

    Kate Beckinsale in Underworld

and I really liked Rhona Mitra in Doomsday although that movie was odd.  I'm looking forward to her in Underworld:Rise of the Lycans

    Trinity - The Matrix

Xena and Gabrielle - Xena: Warrior Princess

I CAN'T CHOOSE, LOVE EM' ALL

Xena and Gabrielle are at the top of my list. Hey, they kicked ass in skirts, different dimensions and several life times!

Lara Croft, she kicks ass in short-shorts and is soooo dreamily smart about History, Mythology, Archeology, etc

Faith, brunette , leather-pants wearing, rouge vampire slayer (is it hot in here? Nope it's just Eliza Dushku)

Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton not the new one): Just cause she could fling me across the room for not including her on the list.

Uuummm, any character ever played by Michelle Rodriguez? Cuz she'd look  tough just eating a frozen yogurt. (even if it were vanilla with sprinkles and gummy bears)

Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) She was in Indiana Jones and The Raiders of the Lost Ark- She kicked Indy's ass, I still remember his face it was hilarious.

Detective Cruz - tough female cop on 3rd Watch, damn she was hard. I wouldn't say no to playing with her hand cuffs though.

    Scarlett O'Hara?
Ingrid Magnussen (the novel of White Oleander)

    Just to add

Joyce Wischnia kicks ass in The L Word, and looks good in a suit doing it. I love Jane Lynch.

Miranda Bailey. I sometimes wish Grey's Anatomy could just be the Dr Bailey Show, with an all-female-doctors-all-the-time storyline. Only in my dreams, I suppose.

Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Batman Returns. Meowrrrr!

    Fey & Fisher!

I SO agree on Tina Fey & Carrie Fisher. I watched Star Wars just last week and fell completely in love with Princess Leia. How cliche is that?

And Tina Fey, well, what can I say...she's simply amazing.

    "Close...but with a 'j'."
