Martina tells all in her new Tennis Channel documentaryIn a welcome change from her last television series appearance, Martina Navratilova is the subject of an upcoming documentary, Signature Series: Martina Navratilova.
Airing exclusively on Tennis Channel, the show is the latest in the network’s line of original documentaries chronicling the careers of some of history’s greatest tennis players. Unlike the three previous Signature Series episodes — featuring Andre Agassi, Rene LaCoste and Pete Sampras — Martina is both subject narrator of the film.
As you would expect, Signature Series: Martina Navratilova covers the pro’s on-court victories that include 167 career tennis titles.
But Martina also talks about her personal life, including her defection to the U.S. at age 18 and her struggle to win over American fans. She also talks at length about her friendship and rivalry with Chris Evert.
I’m glad to see that a segment is devoted to Martina’s coming out process in 1981 and the reactions of her family and friends. As the first major sports figure to come out while she was still at the top of her game, Martina paid a dear price for her openness; it cost her millions of dollars in potential endorsements.
She also discusses her relationship with Nancy Lieberman, who was both personal trainer and lover. I’m interested to hear what she has to say about that time. Without question, Lieberman’s training took Martina’s game to a whole new level. But keeping the truth about their romantic relationship hidden caused Martina much personal pain.
(OK, that’s not Nancy, but don’t Martina and Signature Series: Martina Navratilova premiers June 8 and will air all month. Check the Tennis Channel site for exact times. Submitted by on May 7, 2009 - 3:00pm. |

Ah, Martina!
Had the good fortune to have seen her play several times back in the day--one match with Chris Evert(!). It was when I was reading Martina's autobiography on a sunny day in Copley Square in Boston that it dawned on me what was 'wrong' with me...
Heh heh.
heh. martina turned me gay
heh. martina turned me gay too... seriously. i was fascinated with her for some reason, didn't really know why, the buff body was certainly a lot of it (i was 16 or so at the time), and then i found out that she was gay, and it all started falling into place.
i saw her play a few times, too; she definitely had a great physical presence and was always classy. did not know that she and nancy lieberman were lovers- wow; i remember them claiming that nancy was straight and that there was nothing going on. ha. martina was ahead of her time, in terms of her willingness to be "out and proud." she has earned a great place in GLBT history.
I was like
I was like that's unbelieveable how alike she is to erin daniels!! Then I scrolled down!!!! Good one.

Martina
One of the first tennis matches I ever watched was one of Martina's last matches, against Chris Evert.
I' d love to watch that documentary, let's see whom I can talk into taping it for me ;)
The European channel arte.tv runs two series which often feature athletes "duels of our time" and something about heroes and Martina was featured in a least one of them. Having her tell her story herself will definitely be even more interesting :)

i'll have to keep an eye out
Nancy Lieberman
I am very interested to see how they portray her relationship with Lieberman. Although, it did in fact cause Martina pain to keep their relationship hidden, it was for a good reason.
Fascinating life
ok ok I'm curious and all but her life is even more exciting that what we know I'm sure. Painful too but the glory and joy make up for that. Get them Martina!
