Maria Bello turns to a life of crime

After too many years of playing second fiddle to other stars, Maria Bello is ending this year on a good note.

Bello just signed a deal with HBO to executive produce and star in a new, as-yet-untitled series. The story sounds familiar: A woman whose husband is killed begins a life of crime in order to support her family. She has three sons she uses as henchmen. I guess the family that kills together, chills together.

I’m not clear on how this concept is too different from Weeds, but I’m happy to see Bello in a lead role. She always seems to be somebody’s wife, although she was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in The Cooler and Best Actress for A History of Violence. She also was on ER for a few seasons as Dr. Anna DelAmico.

Currently, Bello is in The Yellow Handkerchief with William Hurt and Kristen Stewart. The movie hasn’t been widely released, but reviews indicate that it’s one of the best indie films of the year.

A positive sign for Bello’s HBO series is that it’s created by Gary Lennon, creator of The Shield. Although The Shield got way too dark for me its last couple of years, I’d love to see Bello in a show of that quality. I mean, I’m always up for seeing more of Maria Bello.

I didn't like Weeds so I doubt I'd like this even though Im a big fan ,'I luv her!', big fan of Maria Bello.

    Love Bello

I really like Maria Bello. She was a tough bad ass in Coyote Ugly and I also really liked her character in Jane Austen Book Club. Nice to see her in a starring role now.

When you described the new show it didn't remind me of Weeds at all, it reminded me more of the film Fun With Dick and Jane and the tv show The Riches. The premise sounds good and HBO always turns out solid shows so I'll definitely be tuning in.

    Ave Maria!

I LOVE Maria Bello! I first saw her in the short-lived TV series, Mr & Mrs Smith, with Scott Bakula in the mid-90s (the show was so bad that it was actually fun to watch!). Then ER, then with Mel Gibson in "Payback" - all in a span of just a couple years. She was cruising from there. It'll be great to see her on her own show. Oh wait - HBO - UGH! I don't get that channel. Figures!

    Mr&Mrs Smith...

I forgot all about that show. I used to love watching that! Maria Bello was kick-ass and gorgeous in it.

    The first picture of Bello

The first picture of Bello is absolutely terrible, which is weird, considering all the pictures after are great.  The pixelation makes her look strangely old.  Someone might want to consider changing that.

Oh lord! That got my xmas-snoozing fangirl-brain to jumpstart! Whoa!

LOVED Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but can't remember why, besides Maria Bello of course.

Loved that Carter thought that Maggie (JORJA FOX!!) had a crush on dr. del Amico! Awesomeness! "I like your hair." Teehee!

Good to see Ms. Bello get

Good to see Ms. Bello get her own show, even if it is on HBO (which I don't have:(. ) Maybe it'll be on DVD.  I never got into Weeds though I do like Mary Lousie Parker.  Hope the show does well for her.

    Mummy 3

I just saw The Mummy 3 and barely recognized her in it.  Hope she hasn't been "tinkering" with her face?  She replaced Rachel Weisz as Evelyn O'Connell and was kind of channelling Kate Beckinsale.  Not much of a role as this version went off the rails imo.

Anyhoo, I would love to see her return to television - and will definitely give her new show a look.

She is beautiful. The first pic shows her age but I don't think it's a bad thing. I love the pic with her in a beater.
