Madonna rocksWhat is rock 'n' roll? Wait, that question probably requires too much thought for a Monday. Instead, ponder this: is Madonna a rocker?
My first response to the question is, "does it matter?" But since the announcement of Madonna's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the blogosphere has been rife with complaints that the pop star does not deserve the honor. The controversy is not about her contributions to musical culture, but whether her music actually is rock 'n' roll.
You know, my response still is "does it matter?" Return with me, if you will, to Madonna: The Early Years — 1984, to be exact. I know much of AfterEllen.com's readership is too young to remember 1984. But trust me, "Like a Virgin" was scandalous. As was Madonna.
She's done a pretty good job of staying scandalous ever since, reinventing herself over and over to keep her edge. Not every incarnation has been golden (American Life — ak!), but her influence on music — all kinds of music — is undeniable. So, to celebrate Madonna's enshrinement tonight, here are some of my favorite Madonna musical moments.
"Material Girl" was Madonna's second hit, but the first one I wasn't embarrassed to sing out loud in front of other people. Hey, I was brought up as a Southern Baptist in Texas. My first Madonna concert was in 1987 — the Who's That Girl Tour. It was a somewhat surreal experience for me because she was in Texas Stadium, where I had attended a Billy Graham crusade in my evangelical days. Both were religious experiences.
I think my favorite Madonna song still is the one that got her in the most trouble — 1989's "Like a Prayer." Madonna trivia of the day: "Like a Prayer" debuted in a Pepsi commercial, which had none of the controversial symbolism of the MTV version of the video. But apparently people couldn't separate the two videos in their minds, so Pepsi had to pull the commercial. Madonna got to keep her $5 million endorsement fee. Some prayer.
Remember when we learned that Madonna could act? Argentina wasn't thrilled with the casting of Eva Peron. But Evita earned Madonna a Golden Globe. And it earned the rest of us this rendition of "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." A friend of mine insists that I was with her at a concert in Madison Square Garden during the Drowned World Tour in 2001. She also insists that she doesn't do drugs. But I've never been to Madison Square Garden. If nothing else, I would've remembered these arms.
Madonna's last tour was the infamous Confessions Tour. I love this promo photo.
As usual, the performance ticked off religious groups, especially the song "Live to Tell." I can't imagine why. The new album, Hard Candy, is due to be released in April. Meanwhile, you can catch the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony tonight on VH1 Classic at 8:30 p.m. EDT. Best Buy also will carry a live stream. So, what do you think? Is Madonna worthy of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? What's your favorite Madonna song? Album? Outfit? Gratuitous bisexual moment?

MADONNA!
All the way! I agree with you, does it really matter if her music is truly considered rock and roll? She deserves it. She has made a ton of money for the music industry (and herself, of course. She is a very astute business women.) She is an icon. The first time I ever saw her was on American Bandstand and when Dick Clark asked her what she hoped to accomplish she smiled slyly at the camera and calmly said "I want to rule the world!" My favorite album is still her very first self titled album, song "Borderline", favorite video "Justify My Love", outfit all of them, gratuitous bisexual moment her and Isabella Rossellini *drool* in Madonna's SEX book!!!
*edited to add my unrequinted love of Madonna and her music will never die. And yeah! What the next two ladies said!!! She IS Rock-N-Roll! So stop the semantics and proudly induct the woman to her rightful place in the Rock-N-Roll Hall Of Fame already!!!
You wrote it right! As have all...
...I love Madonna! And she does rock! And get me on the dance floor too! Love the SEX book, it's on a table in my bedroom with other assorted photographic collections.
I think she does rule the world! She is the Queen of All She Surveys and she could add me to her view, for me happily.
I also love her first album quite alot and play it a lot also.
And thanks to the thread starter for all the videos and the pic of Britney and Madonna! I still think it's hot!
Absolutely Rock-N-Roll
I actually did a paper on women in Rock-N-Roll for a women's study class a while back, and
since that means I am an expert,I must say, she definitely qualifies in that category. If you go back to the basic roots of RnR; it came about in the 1950's as a blend of black rhythm-and-blues and white country-and-western music. The term "rock" can now be accurately used to describe virtually every genre of music that has spawned from that. All the various genres of music we have today are fairly brand new creations. "Pop" and "hip-hop" didn't exist, even fifty years ago.
Madonna most definitely deserves the honor, regardless of whether she's ever broken a guitar on stage or not.

Why Not??
Early Rock and Roll was nothing like the 'Rock' of today. So why wouldn't Madonna qualify for it. Can you compare any of the inductees to one another?
Brenda Lee vs The Clash?
Cream and Mahalia Jackson?
The Rascals and AC/DC?
Give me a break. Madonna was her own woman, did it her way and is still around. Her popularity and sustainability prove her worth. So quit the semantics and induct her proudly into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Totally!
You can say whatever you want about Madonna, but shes always rocked the world with her music, image and attitude. That to me totally makes her worth getting into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of fame. With the lines blurring between music more and more everyday, lets celebrate diversity like only this website can and stand by Madonna, lol. I say let her in and let her next album be as crazy as ever.
And in all honesty, Madge has always wanted to be a "rocker" so i say good for her, all that learning to play the guitar has finally paid off ;-).
Yes, I do think it matters
Interesting question
I think it matters if rock vs pop is a distinction recognized by the Hall of Fame. If other pop stars are inducted, then I certainly support her induction. I still wouldn't consider her rock, though.
"Like a Prayer" is still my favorite Madonna song. I think that was the album where she really came into her own as a substantive artist. And I have very strong college/coming out associations with the song. :-)
Madonna and Britney
the 2003?4? MTV music video awards.
I loved Madonna before I watched that. But when it happened, I downloaded the opening (I never had cable). I realized I was gay after that. And it also scored me my first kiss and an intensely hot make out session with a girl who I met at summer school, because she was obsessed with it too.
I love Madonna. So much. I'd make out with her in a heartbeat
Not Rock and Roll, But...
It seems that anyone who has at least one hit record will get in eventually, if they live long enough. The only rule for induction seems to be that the artist be around for at least 25 years. I think they should just change the Hall's name to the Mainstream Music Hall of Fame. I have never thought of Madonna as a rocker. I don't consider Leonard Cohen, Prince, or Michael Jackson to be rock and roll either, but they're all great in their own right. When I hear the list of new inductees each year, I usually roll my eyes at one or more of the names, but then I remember that R&B also isn't what R&B used to be.
For me, it comes to this. If someone has been around for 25 years, making music that influences other artists and the world at large, I can't really begrudge them an accolade, even one that isn't quite accurately named.
Though we choose between reality and madness, it's either sadness or euphoria.
-- Billy Joel
Hmmmm....
totally agree
Heart AND Joan Jett overlooked again
so right!
why do they keep passing over heart? but the big WHY is joan...she was through the roof cool at the R/R induction ceremony...but mo' ? that was just weird to see her inducted over joan...madonna is a pop rock...joan is a rock star!

No Heart
She deserves to be there but some others should go first
I agree 100% with everyone,
I can't condone this
Is Madonna a rocker ABSOLUTLY
i WAS BORN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE R&R REVOLUTION AND THEN IT MEANT TO BE OUTRAGOUS, DIFFERENT, TALENTED, OBNOXIOUS, ICONIC SOMEONE YOUR MOTHER WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO MEET OR EVEN WATCH ON TV.
DOES MADONNA QUALIFY?
ABSOLUTLY ON ALL COUNTS
I HOPE SHE KEEPS ON ROCKIN'
To Me the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...
i love this woman!
madonna is a real legend! she is amazing! i can't believe she was right where i lived in south wales in the uk, with her confessions tour and i couldn't go! that's what you get for being a poor student!
but i love this woman and she totally deserves it! she is timeless! to keep reinventing herself and fitting in with the current pop culture is pure talent. i hope she keeps on going forever!
She's pop not rock!
I think it totally matters, and maybe that's because I'm a fan of rock and metal music. Madonna is a pop star not a rock star and I have no problem with the Grammy's or other music award shows acknowledging her talents but NOT the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! She has back up dancers for crying out loud! There's no back up dancing in rock!
I'm not denying that she's had a hell of a career and has made some great music, but it's not rock and roll and I think it's a big mistake.
Thank you for posting all
Thank you for posting all these videos! I've just spent a happy 20 minutes viewing a brief overview of Madonna's career. :)
I still remember the first time I saw Madonna. It was 1985, I was watching Friday Night Videos (remember that show?) with my older cousin, and "Material Girl" came on. I was 5 years old and I've been a Madonna fan basically ever since. I never got to see her in concert as a kid, as I was a bit too young, but I did get my parents to take me to see Who's That Girl? in the movie theater. I lost interest in Madonna for a while after Like A Prayer (even though that is my favorite of her albums), which was probably for the better as I don't think my parents would've bought an album called Erotica for their 12-year-old daughter. My interest in her was revived when she did Evita, as I am a big theater junkie. I finally got to see her live for the first time on the Drowned World Tour and it was amazing. I haven't missed a tour since.
While Madonna's music may not be what we now think of as "rock 'n roll" she is most definitely a rockstar and a pioneer. Her music and her ever-changing personas have been with me for almost my whole life, and her image as a strong, independent woman has had a big impact on me as I've grown up.

Bless your Madonna lovin' heart! I LOVE MADONNA TOO! Some of the points made above are indeed valid, however. Alice Cooper, Linda Ronstadt, Heart, and Joan Jett deserve to be there already. I love all of their music too and it is true Rock and Roll genre. I still believe Madonna deserves to be there, but the fact that the others listed aren't there already is pretty disheartening. Is AC/DC in the Rock Hall Of Fame? Just asking. :D
*Thanks linster! Ac/Dc is there. The other aforementioned people are not. That isn't fair... =(
Inductees
Here's a link to the list of inductees. http://www.rockhall.com/inductees/inductee-list/
madonna is pop...
not bad or good but she is what she is...you see L7, Lita Ford, The Runways, Joan Jett, Heart and other women rockers passed over for Madonna and you have to wonder if they really will ever take women rockers as REAL rockers...so tired women not being played on the rock stations and junk like that...tired of calling in requests and knowing these d-jocks have no clue about the artist's song I am requesting...but you say Madonna and they can rattle off the songs and how they loved her torpedo bra and Brit' kiss...no hate to madonna or her fans...but geez can't we show some love to the women rockers who have picked up their axes and rocked it the hard way all these years?
www.myspace.com/lostactionfigure
She belongs in there
Adoration
I adore Madonna, and I totally think that she deserves the induction. I've been a fan since my wee baby days, thanks very much to my sister. The best memories of my childhood and times with my sister are linked to Mo. I'll always love her, even if Hard Candy is sounding horrible to me at the moment.
I am my own experiment. I am my own work of art. - Madonna
