Lori Petty directs her own story in "The Poker House"For many of us, the name Lori Petty brings to mind the very happy memory of A League of Their Own.
And the very strange memory of Tank Girl.
Now Petty has emerged in a different kind of role: director. Her film, The Poker House, which premiered at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival, is in limited theater release this week and will be out on DVD August 18. (Thanks to @melsil for the heads-up.)
The Poker House, which Petty wrote with David Alan Grier, is a true coming-of-age story based on her own life. Agnes (Jennifer Lawrence) and her sisters Cammie and Bee grow up with their strung-out, hooker mother Sarah (Selma Blair), a pimp “dad” and a house filled with gamblers, criminals and johns.
Agnes, who is 14, raises her sisters and manages the household while still keeping up with her schoolwork and basketball team. Reviews describe Lawrence’s performance as “commanding,” even when she doesn’t speak a word. Interestingly, Lawrence didn’t realize that she was playing Petty until well into shooting. The two talked to MovieWeb about the film: For Blair, the part of Sarah is unlike anything she has played before. She is almost unrecognizable when she takes on the character. Blair said that she worked very closely with Petty to make sure she got the role right. I’ll say.
The performance has been called Oscar-worthy. Here’s Blair’s take on The Poker House, also from MovieWeb. The Poker House is a difficult and disturbing movie, to be sure. But Petty hopes that the ultimate message is one of redemption. “Forgive people that are really doing the best that they can. You don’t know whatsomeone’s going through. You don’t know where they’ve been. You don’t know what happens when they go home. Treat everybody the way you would like to be treated and be thankful just to be alive. Don’t be afraid and don’t let the past affect your present.” That’s a strong message — and probably one that only a woman director like Petty could make. I’m looking forward to the chance to see it. How about you? Will you take a chance on The Poker House? Submitted by on July 21, 2009 - 1:00pm. |

Yeah Tank Girl
Didn't know that Petty was in A League of Thier Own but I LOVED Tank Girl as it was also my introduction to No Doubt and Gwen Stefani.
Technology Will Lead To The Demise Of Civilization As We Know It.
The pic is misleading
Actually it is
Petty in that picture from "A League of their own"... She was a red head (Well red head-sh) not a brunette.
But you are right, it was/is a great movie
[[EDIT]] Apologies, I wasn't aware that the picture had been changed!
The Poker House

They look like they are going to kiss in that last pic...Hmmmm...lol. Might have to watch this one, it sounds good. =)
Come on now...
The first photo is NOT Lori Petty! That's the character Evelyn Gardner!
You'd think of the 90% of the film that Lori is in you would have chosen one of those photos instead.
Nevertheless...looking forward to this! :)

Thanks!
I appreciate your patience. Apologies for the wrong pic -- that's what happens when I write a post late at night. I think it was Kit in the picture last night and somebody switched it, Potter-style.
I will find a suitable replacement and get it up ASAP.
No worries I was just
No worries I was just kidding...but yeah that pic is great. I love Evelyn Gardner and Jimmy Dugan (ha) but Kit is definitely the best character in that movie!

nice, thanks!
I love Lori Petty. Loved her in A League of Their Own (definitely rooted for her team when she got traded!) and Free Willy. Sad to hear she had a less-than-stellar childhood, but it looks to be a good, if depressing, film.
Anybody know if she is family, because I've always gotten that vibe from her, and she obviously doesn't shy away from gay films (she was also great in Prey for Rock and Roll), and her IMDB page says nothing about a husband/boyfriend whatever...
i haven't got...
any concrete evidence to display here but, lori petty is a woman that truly gives off the vibe and thats it... and its cool if it stays that way imo. I think she IS but, speculating just never gets us anywhere.
i'm not sure if that's my gaydar or my fire alarm ringing but,its hot as hades in here......."ladyj"
hehe that's
hehe that's AWESOME!

Hot damn.
So I first fell in love with Lori Petty in Free Willy. At 9 years old, it was my first "AHA!-I-like-chicks" moment. Reading this article just made my day. People used to tell me I looked like Selma Blair, and seeing that picture of the two of them is just... AHHHH. So loverly. :)

Free Willy
Yeah she played in Free Willy, the first movie. She was the one who trained the seals and she tried to train Willy too. Oh....good memories...loved the Free Willy trilogy, I grew-up with it. Now I know why I loved her character so much...lol
I'll have to check out that
The other day Selma Blair
Is Selma
