Laura Dern gets "Enlightened" by HBO

I loved Laura Dern long before she brought Ellen out of the closet.

But her appearance as Ellen’s lesbian crush Susan in “The Puppy Episode” said a lot about Dern’s willingness to support the LGBT community before Hollywood jumped on the gay rights bandwagon.

In an interview with DeGeneres in 2007, Dern said she didn’t work for a year and a half after the episode aired. But she remained proud to be a part of such a groundbreaking moment in cultural history.

Thankfully, TPTB came to their senses and Dern’s career returned to full speed ahead. Just last year she won a Golden Globe for her performance as Florida politician Katherine Harris in HBO’s movie Recount.

Now HBO has announced that it is bringing Dern back, this time in a comedy series. In Enlightened, Dern plays “a formerly self-destructive woman who, after having a spiritual awakening, becomes determined to live an enlightened life, creating havoc at home and work.” Mike White, who became friends with Dern when she starred in his film Year of the Dog, is writing the pilot. He hopes to shoot it by the end of the year.

Since I never get enough Laura Dern, I couldn’t be happier about the prospect of seeing her on a series. And I think the premise is ripe for comedy, especially in the less restrictive creative environment of cable.

Are you ready to be Enlightened? Does this series sound like a winner? What’s your favorite Laura Dern role?

    I remember

that episode so well. I remember the emotions I felt and the excitement that it was actually happen. I also remember that I was actually susprised when Ellen came out on the cover of Times Magazine.

I also was very disappointed by people's reaction to both Ellen and Laura Dern after that ep aired. To not find work because of a character an actor/actress plays is just stupid. I know that we have made some progress, but it's still not nearly enough. There are still a lot of actors that have issues playing homosexual and/or bisexual characters because they fear the negative connotations associated with said roles. It speaks volumes of the Ms. Dern's professionalism that she didn't bat an eyelash when she played the object of Ellen's affection ten years ago. Good for her. She is one hell of an actress, and I'm glad she's going to be in a new show. I can't wait to see her in that.

    I heart Laura Dern

Not only was she a true ally when it wasn't the popular, safe thing to do, but she kept quiet about how it hurt her career for many years.  The latter made me realize that she was so sincere and classy that she would not try to use what happened to her advantage.  She did it for Ellen and for us.

    Laura Dern>>

I have loved Laura Dern for ages and ages! The very first time I remember seeing her work was when I was a kid and I saw 'Mask,' the Hollywood-version story of Rocky Dennis. Since then, I have come to greatly admire her for her choice in roles b/c she always plays these interesting and strong characters. I even loved her in 'The Siege at Ruby Ridge' although her character was a racist bitch. I LOVED her in 'A Perfect World' and 'Citizen Ruth.'  But my favorite role is, of course, in 'Wild At Heart ("LUUULLLAAAAA!!!!!!").' I can watch that movie over and over again.

Laura Dern- you get me hotter n' Georgia asphalt. I love you, woman! Thank you for being such an incredible ally and of course, I'll watch your show!

    I loved her in Inland

I loved her in Inland Empire, Lynch brings out such great female performances. She also played gay in Happy Endings. I'll give Enlightened a watch.
