Kimya Dawson and her musical fruit

If you're a regular reader of AfterEllen.com, you know how much we love Juno around here. And if you've seen the movie, you know why. If you haven't, well, just quit what you're doing and go. Now. Your boss will understand.

One of the many signs of Juno's genius is the music. In fact, the soundtrack is so beautifully blended with the film that it's hard to imagine the movie without it. And last week, the album was finally released for those of us who like to have a physical recording to load in the CD player while we read the liner notes. (The digital version already tops Billboard's Top Digital Albums list.) Some of the artists — the Kinks, Belle & Sebastian, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth — are well known, but the heart and soul of the soundtrack come from singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson, shown here with her hair.

Dawson is perhaps best known as a member of the Moldy Peaches, which means that most of the general public has never heard of her. Juno certainly could increase Dawson's profile, given the film's popularity. The Houston Chronicle predicts, "Juno is to her what Magnolia was to Aimee Mann, only without the Supertramp." Dawson's style certainly is not for everyone, but I suspect that if you like the movie, you'll like the soundtrack.

Dawson's involvement in Juno was actually Ellen Page's idea. In an interview with Pitchfork, Page recalls that director Jason Reitman asked her what kind of music she thought her character Juno would listen to. "Immediately I said the Moldy Peaches and he, I guess, wasn't familiar with their work, so I hopped on his computer and I played the Moldy Peaches for him. The next thing I knew he'd fallen in love." Reitman's favorite, "Anyone Else But You," reflects the mix of wit, quirkiness and heart that makes Juno so endearing.

Other tracks are harsher, but Dawson's childlike voice makes lyrics like the anti-Bush "Loose Lips" sound like nursery rhymes. And the songs she wrote especially for Juno, like "So Nice So Smart," are the perfect mix of innocence and rebellion.

"I like boys with strong convictions
and convicts with perfect diction
underdogs with good intentions
amputees with stamp collections"

But the highlight of the soundtrack for me is the last song. Paulie (Michael Cera) and Juno's duet of "Anyone Else But You" is adorkable. As Blogger News says, "it's the icing on the cake of an already beautifully executed soundtrack." OK, that's a little much. But you get the idea.

Currently, Dawson is on tour to promote the Juno soundtrack — she's in New York this week. You can find her updated schedule on her Live Journal. Meanwhile, you can sample the album at IndieMuse and enjoy some movie highlights set to Paulie and Juno's duet.

Have you seen Juno? Do you agree with me that Ellen Page totally got cheated out of a Golden Globe? What do you think of Kimya Dawson and the Juno soundtrack?

    first?

I've been obsessed with Kimya Dawson for going on a year now and I was SO EXCITED to see Juno. She blogged about the movie quite a bit, and so I was eagerly anticipating the soundtrack, which completely fulfilled my expectations. I'm really really glad that other people are getting to hear her fabulous music.

<3 Kimya! (and her absolutely adorable daughter, whose name is PANDA.)

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    Kimya Dawson

I started listening to her last year when my sister gave me her cd. It is so innocent sounding yet the lyrics are twisted. and for the movie, it is going to be a memorable one. When I first watched the movie for the duet at the end I thought they sang "you sure are cute for two ugly people" but alas no, it is not that.

    Of Course Kimya!

Out here in Seattle we've been aware of Kimya's talent for a while. Everytime my friend and I find out she is playing we bust our asses to be there. One time she got the entire audience into a giant wrap-around hug. During shows she is super personable and down to earth. My favorite songs of hers are: I Like Giants, Lullaby For the Taken, Loose Lips, and The Beer . Kimya rocks and she is a very sweet and genuine person.

    Kimya's pretty awesome. I'm

Kimya's pretty awesome. I'm not a huge super fan, but I can't deny her greatness :)

The music for Juno though, is so fantastic. I just saw the movie this past weekend and fell in love. Ellen Page was totally robbed of that Golden Globe.

    Moldy Peaches

I've been a Moldy Peaches fan for years!  So glad to hear Kimya and Adam are getting their due.  The first time I saw them live was when they were opening for The Strokes on their first tour.  They stole the show.

Should have gotten that Globe. What a travesty.

Thanks for the article - it has inspired me to go download the album (hurries!).

I need to watch this film soon

I've not seen Juno, but i've loved the Moldy Peaches for ages. I watched the trailer up there and it looks like an amazing film, with a great talented cast and the Moldy Peaches seem like they will be a perfectly match to the film.

I need to watch this film soon

    Juno

Simply put, Juno is the perfect film. And it can't be perfect without a perfect balance of perfectly chosen music.

I'll still buy the CD. Call me old skool!

    Juno & Kimya

My girlfriend and I were rolling on our chairs laughing in the theatre (the rest of the crowd was clearly enjoying it but there was a minority who was really into it like we were).

Regarding Kimya, I've known her music for a long time - story: I first met my girlfriend when she was visiting Brazil at my hometown, Sao Paulo in 2001. One of our first dates was shopping for this obscure music I had never heard of that she said I would love. Describing it, it sounded dreadful.

She had been outside of the US for a few months and had been trying to find it everywhere without luck. After a few used CD stores, we came across the CD: The Moldy Peaches! When I first listened I was not immediately hooked, it's very unique - but it grew on me. Ever since then it's become one of our main go-to CDs (great for long car trips!). So much so that when we were watching Juno we both had a hard time not singing along.

I hope Kimya gets a little more notoriety with the attention she's getting from Juno - Ellen Page definitely made her a big favor. Aside from that, I think her performance was fenomenal and even though she has not been recognized with an award yet, it's not entirelly unlikelly that it could become an Oscar nomination. She'd have my vote.

    Phone: Juno?
    Juno: No, it's Morgan Freeman!

    LOL!

Edit: After reading this I decided to check out Kimya's blog and she'll be in Philly this weekend - I just got tickets: A sure way to score girlfriend brownie points ;)

    Soundtrack

I'm definitley in the minority here, but I just got the soundtrack and I do love it, just not the Kimya Dawson tracks (I think I'm also in the minority of not adoring Juno, no matter how cute Ellen Page and Micheal Cera are).  She's just a bit too cutesy for me.  I did love the rest, though, especially "Superstar", "Sea of Love", and the Belle and Sebastion tracks.  Oh, and "Vampire" is awesome and hilarious.

    amazing soundtrack

i bought the soundtrack before even seeing the movie, and knew then that i couldn't possibly be disappointed. and, of course i wasn't. :)

    pure perfection

    adorkable boy and..

    hotttttt girl and...

    great story and film and...

    perfect music!!!

it was all just great! i downloaded kimya and the soundtrack right after i got home from seeing Juno, after I resisted going back in the theater to watch it again right away! I am obsessed with her now, though i kinda wish i was one of the cool kids that knew her BEFORE the movie, ha, oh well.  Download the song 'Underground' by her too, I love that one! ("so i tattoo instructions on my ass, don't ever put this body in a casket...")

And Ellen Page! Good god, how I am obsessed with her! She is hot and I am in love with her voice! Shouldn' t she just tell us she is at least bi already?! Ha, I just want her to be.

    Ellen being bi (or not)

"Shouldn' t she just tell us she is at least bi already?"

Hold on to your horses, Camnista :) It really doesn't matter if she is or not. She just has ideas and views that are so awesome and left field, she might as well be, regardless of who she sleeps with!

And I say this even though she's my daughter's age:) Tee hee.

Kimya's "So Nice and So Smart" :)

I was lucky enough to see Kimya Dawson perform @ Southpaw in Brooklyn on Sunday and she was absolutely wonderful. She was beyond humble and actually seemed quite embarassed by the newfound fame Juno has brought her, yet incredbily grateful to be able to do what she loves. She even said something to the effect of, "Please never run up to me on the street-- I don't do this for fame and I just really appreciate you all coming out here today. I love you guys and let's just be friends." [But with lots of adorably awkward pauses and voice cracklings.] :)

I think the honesty and candidness of Kimya's lyrics, as well as her humor and clever way with words, contrasts with the simplicity of the music itself, which really mirrors Juno's character as well, who is witty and wise beyond her years in ways, but also realizes she is young and has a lot to learn.

Juno is, in my mind, at least, the best film of 2007 and a definite must see if you haven't already had the pleasure

    Kimya and the Moldy Peaches...

I was beyond thrilled to hear both the Moldy Peaches and Kimya to have songs featured in the movie, especially since "Anyone But You" (my favorite MP song) was played! It's sad that they only have one album together, but really awesome that both
Kimya and Adam are still releasing material. Glad that they're getting exposure over this. :)

Oh, and I loved that Sonic Youth was also on the soundtrack!

more people should know about the MP

the Moldy Peaches are the most under-rated artists out there, im glad they got the kind of exposure they did in Juno. it'll tell more people out there about what an awesome thing they're missing out.

    pannenhilfe's picture

    You'r so right!

But I think anti-folk is in general under-rated (and expecially in the US)

I fell in love with the Moldy Peaches shortly after they broke up - I would do just anything to have the chance to see them ...

But to be honest, I like Adam Green better than Kimya ... don't know why, but I can't listen to her solo tracks ...

    queeniefakesit's picture

    awwww

i've been hearing her name/moldy peaches around for years now, yet i could never find anything on them for real (none of their albums are around down here) so i'm glad to hear her sound finally..yeah.

I think i might go see Juno tonight after work if it's not too late.

    I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

    this soundtrack is like so

this soundtrack is like so boss. all of my friends completly agree too, this isn't the kind of music i would normaly lsren, but it is so completly awesome. Its funny,i'd find myself waking at school singing some of the songs, and everyone would be like "oh, you saw Juno???, i love that song"  and like 10 of my fiends have a song from the soundtrack on their miespacio

"When I am right, no one remebers. When I am wrong, no one forgets."

     "Sup Kare" "Effing Brian"

    "Wha Happen????"
