Jeanette Winterson requests "Dykes" for herself

AfterEllen.com reader notshane tipped us off to a post on Alison Bechdel’s blog that pointed to a very funny Jeanette Winterson anecdote about buying The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For.

Jeanette Winterson, you recall, is the out lesbian author who wrote, among other things, both book and screenplay for Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. (Yes, I know these are vegetables.)

In a recent column for The Times, Winterson recalls that she decided to order four copies of Essential Dykes from her local bookshop, the Borzoi, in Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire. Although the UK has its share of large, all-you-can-read bookstores, the Borzoi is one of those quaint charmers that you see in movies such as 84 Charing Cross Road, “full of retired gentry piling up their biographies of Churchill and taking home multiple copies of Niall Ferguson. Even as I went through the door, some chap was booming away about ordering the Schofield Bible and had they got that ‘Mitford thingy?’” (Yes, this is my second reference to the Mitfords in a week.)

Winterson was a bit nervous about asking for Essential Dykes to Watch Out For in such a genteel setting and so, she said, “I lurked in the poetry section until there was a lull, then I babbled my request.”

The shop did not have the title in stock and wanted to clarify the title. Dykes? Naturally, “at that moment a dozen colonels’ wives appeared at once.” A fast-thinking clerk said, “I will find that book about HOLLAND for you.” And a few days later, she got the message that her books on “Holland” were in and waiting under the counter, in a bag, for her to pick up.

“I went and collected my dykes," Winterson said, "and just to save face ordered a vastly expensive print-on-demand copy of Ted Hughes Shakespeare and the Goddess of Complete Being … so that I too could boom a title over the counter.”

Winterson goes on to say that she is known as the “homosexual authoress (the only one in the village)” in her town. “I suppose I should be writing racy novels in a tweed skirt and brogues, but then everybody else around here wears those.”

Reading Winterson’s column reminded me how much I love her writing. And remembering to read an author I love is a great way to start the new year.

On a personal note, Winterson’s father passed away Dec. 29. She wrote a warm and thought-provoking tribute to him for her personal website. We wish Winterson peace during this challenging time.

    THANK YOU!

For writing a piece on Jeanette Winterson.  I have been waiting for someone to comment on afterellen.com on how fantastic and amazing she is.  I've been a huge Jeanette Winterson fan for over 8 years now and think she is one of the best writers I've ever read (and that's a compliment coming from a former English major who read everything under the sun and continues to be a huge book nerd).  Few people can match up to her.  I also read her personal blogs on her website and find myself as carried away by them as her books.

I highly recommend reading "Sexing the Cherry" (I think the Dog Woman is one of the greatest characters written in recent literature) and "Oranges are not the only fruit" (which is sort of auotobiographical), but pretty much anything of hers is absolutely amazing.  So happy to see her mentioned on afterellen.  Thanks again!

You shouldn't have had to wait very long.

    whoa

Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit is a MOVIE??? How did I not know this?

If they make Sexing the Cherry a movie then I will officially be content.  That book would make an incredibly dark and interesting film.  Thanks for that link!

    Oranges...

was adapted for TV (eons ago). She wrote the TV script too. And it was gobsmaking unbelievable at the time for showing explicit sex scenes between teen girls!

    Sad

Am I the only person who finds this sad?  I mean yeah, it's funny, Holland, dikes, dykes, haha, but seriously, she is an out author and she's embarassed to be getting a book about dykes?

    Oranges and Chocolate

Pretty funny!  I grew up in rural England so I know exactly the set of characters she's describing. I remember trying to post a parcel to Australia at the High Street Post Office (come corner shop), you could hear a pin drop for the eavesdropping! May well have been tempted to go a little Dutch Myself!

Jeanette Winterson rocks!!  'Oranges' is one of my favourite novels, not just because of the theme, but, because of the characters and the humour.

Just got my own lovely, fat copy of DTWOF.  It's like having a jumbo, family block of chocolate when you're used to getting individual squares.

    Not surprising

Well, twee places like the one she's living in are not exactly known for their diversity and acceptance. God only knows why she's picked a place like that to live in.

(There are plenty of picturesque villages in the UK that aren't quite so crusty)

    Very funny

You can picture it perfectly as well...lol...Jeanette is amazing...and her tribute to her father was very moving.

To all those Aussies out there...'Oranges...' is (finally!) being released on DVD early Feb, and you can get it <plug> at The Bookshop Darlinghurst :D

     Cheers, Linster

    The Powerbook

The Powerbook 'There is no love that does not pierce the hands and feet.'  Beautiful writing.  Really restored my faith in 'alternative' novels.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this article.

    Best,

    Heather.

    Fruits!

Haven't read the rest of the post, or any of the other comments, but I think almost all the veggies in the pic are indeed fruits.  Best wishes from northwest Pennsylvania, USA.
