Jada Pinkett Smith gets good news about "HawthoRNe"First off, I love Jada Pinkett Smith.
I mean, please. She is nothing short of hot. And her portrayal of lesbian Alex Fisher was just about the only thing worth watching in The Women.
But her show, HawthoRNe, is not so hot.
I tried to love it, I really did. I want to support a series with a strong female lead, especially when that woman happens to be an over-40 woman of color. The fact that Smith is gorgeous is just a bonus.
Unfortunately, HawthoRNe just isn’t all that interesting. Maybe I’m unfairly comparing Smith’s Christina Hawthorne, chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital, to Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie. But Christina seems too valiant and heroic — too perfect. And that’s kind of boring.
Many critics share my opinion but, luckily for Smith and the rest of the HawthoRNe cast, TNT apparently does not. Today the network announced that HawthoRNe will return for a second season in 2010.
I’m sure the renewal has something to do with the fact that Smith executive produces the show. But even a Hollywood heavyweight needs good writing to make a series work. Here’s hoping some new ones are on their way to rescue HawthoRNe — and get rid of the annoying capped “RN” in the name. Meanwhile, the last two episodes of the season air tonight and next Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET. Is anyone watching HawthoRNe? If you like it, what makes the show worth your time? If not, what do you think could liven up the series? Other than for Christina to be a lesbian, of course. Submitted by on August 11, 2009 - 10:00am. |

I watch it, but...I've been kind of forcing myself to enjoy it because it is...afterall...Jada Pinkett-Smith. She's so hot and smart and just perfect. Hawthorne is somewhat interesting, but her character is too one-dimensional. It's not a horrible show. It's just not one of my favorites like Nurse Jackie.
I'll keep watching it because Suleka Mathew (Bobbie on the show) is hot. One leg or no legs. I don't care. She's hot.
yea i like it too, but why
I don't love Nurse Jackie
I watch it...
I get it noW!
I was wondering what was up with the capitalised letters in the name, as I've never heard of the show before, but RN, I get it: Registered Nurse. Funny. Clever.
And yes, The Women was a dire film, but Alex Fisher was a great character. By the way, what is up with lesbians being called Alex? Jada in the Women, Olivia Wilde in the OC, Alex Hedison, Alex Parks (UK singer). Come on! If you call your daughter Alex you may as well buy her a pair of baby Chucks and be done with it.

Callie: You don't even like sandwiches!
Arizona: But I like the girl who has the sandwiches.
I think Erin and Melissa are
I didn't watch the show at
I do like the show
I've watched the show since its inception. Although there are no out lesbians on the show, there is a ton of lesbian-energy... if you look closely.
1. Observe the more-than-sisterly-but-less-than-Sapphic relationship between Christina and Bobby.
2. Aisha Hinds (as the homeless Isabelle) is really butchy.
3. Cheryl Brooks (as nurse Jillian) is a lesbian in real life.
4. Anne Ramsey (as the narcisistic doctor from the pilot ep) was also an early love interest of Jenny's in season one of The L Word.
and
5. Jada Pinkett Smith. Her own production company is called "One Hundred Percent Womon" with two "o's."
Hawthorne>>
I didn't even realize this had premiered yet! OK- I will be watching from now on.
I watch it
I love HawthoRNe
I absolutely love the show. I can't stand Nurse Jackie. The only episode I watched in it's entirety is Tiny Bubbles and that was because I forced myself to. I don't know maybe I have something against drug abuse and adultry. (That could be proven by the fact that I didn't watch The L Word for like a season after Bette cheated on Tina) I don't know but when I saw Jackie come home and there were her two daughters and her husband who looks more than a few years younger than her I was like wtf!?!?!? Also she doesn't take responsibility for her actions for example: she blames things she does on the new nurse.
I'd rather be stuck in a room watching episodes of HawthoRNe over and over than have to sit through even one episode of Nurse Jackie.
And I agree with the above mentioned reasons by CJ 2000
Oh and I don't think Christina is perfect in fact she does a lot of things that could get her fired. I think she tries to do what's best for her daughter, friends, coworkers, patients etc.
Jackie tries to do the same I think but the way she goes about it makes me like her character even less
Well, I love it!
So far all of the stories/cases/patients, whatever, have been really interesting!
My favorite episode so far was the one when the mother was separated from her daughter cause they thought she neglected her child and somehow her child had consumed alcohol but then right at the last minute...the sweet/young/naive nurse found the wipes she was using, that were proven to be cause of the problem. And I think that was a very sad and dramatic episode
I think the show has some really cool funny moments too. I think it has good balance there. There's some chemistry between Michael Vartan and Jada's characters, which would be great if it developed more and we actually had an interracial couple, just a little less rare than a gay one right.
I love the mother/daughter relationship too, if you're looking for flaws in Christina I believe they have been most exposed there. She can handle the hospital, she's used to it and she's apparently very good at her job and that's how she became the cheif nurse anyway so we might have to wait a while to see her really screw that up. But its VERY clear that she's not at all used to single parenting yet, and happens to have quite the manipulative little teenager on her hand.
The premiere bugged me, I didn't think it was that great, already it has improved so much, I'm looking forward to season 2. One thing's for sure, I could be watching worse things, not many bright spots on the tube, tv sucks now!

Here's Another Tidbit of Info about Jada Pinkett-Smith
Her mom is a nurse and Jada was inspired to do a show based on what she saw and experienced while growing up - like an ode to mom. Jada is on the cover of minority nurse magazine(not in stores). They interviewed her and her mom. The article is very interesting. Not many blacks in the nursing field especially in higher chain of command so the show is special.
I haven't seen it. I hope I can online through TNT's site. Jada is pretty smart. I'm sure she'll figure out how to revamp her character and the show.
I like the show
I watched it online. I got all caught up. The first 3 or 4 episodes were okay but as I continued to watch it I got drawed in and I like it.
There is a lot of lesbian undertone in the show, I agree with CJ 2000.
OMG, in one of the episodes, okay it's the one where she gives her daughter a urine test for drugs. In that episode, at the end she is wearing some boots...the heels must be about 10ins. I know she's short but can't they just bring the camera down to her.

This show is so bad, but has
I reeeeeally like it.
I do. I think Jada occasionally overacts, but her performance still feels authentic. The way she reacts to Camille as a mom feels very familiar and relatable to me. So far, Christine is my favorite role of Jada's and I'm sure that next season will be a whole lot stonger especially since the characters will have been developed. Speaking of characters...I am totally in love with Hannah Hodson, the actress who plays Camille. Ahh, she's like my dream woman. I really hope her character gets more screen time next season, not just because she's gorgeous, though that is a MAJOR plus, but I think she's a fantastic young actress.
P.S. Soccergirl25, that is sooooo cool that you know Vanessa Lengies! How do you know her?
This show should have never
This show should have never even been on the air in the first place!
http://lesbiandaily.blogspot.com/ <---Check it out. :]
DULL!!
I watched the first 3 or 4 episodes of Hawthorne and gave up through sheer boredom! I like Jada PS but she is so perfect in thsi she should have a cape! The show's intentions are good and it is good to see so many strong women of colour, but the characters are tedious and unbelievable, the plots just boring and dull.
OTOH I LOVE Nurse Jackie. While Jada flies around being all perfect, Jackie is such a fascinating character, as are all of the cast. Despite Jackie's drug habit, I would much rather have her as my nurse if I was in hospital than Nurse Hawthorne. Jackie is very caring towards her patients while Nurse Hawthorne (can't remember her first name!) is always whizzing off!
The big difference is in the writing of the shows. Hawthorne is retreading the medical drama is a way we have seen over and over again in the past. Nurse Jackie is genuinely original.
Still, good for Jada. Glad to see a black women have the power to carry a show, and if its a partial tribute to her mother who was a nurse, once again, a noble cause. They just need to hire better writers.
To be honest..
The storytelling is a bit tedious and Christina is indeed a little too perfect...but I love Jada and she's one of a kind in delivering lines like: "From tha mean streets o' DC, what what!"
And Suleka Mathews' character, Bobby, is a diamond in the rough...so, yeah - I kind of like it!
.....
The show is not the greatest acting...but I cant resist Jada Pinkett.
If the show was played by an actress that wasn't as intoxicating, I would have gave up on it by not....
