Is Izzie headed to the morgue? So, you know how Katherine Heigl said she withdrew her name from Emmy consideration last year because Izzie didn’t have an award worthy storyline on Grey’s Anatomy?
Everybody was all, like, “Oh, Izzie’s dead.” And Shonda Rhimes was all, “I wouldn’t kill Izzie and she has an awesome story next year.” And we were all, “Sure, Shonda Rhimes” and she was all, “Seriously” and we were all, “Yeah, we’ll see.” (Possible spoilers ahead.)
Apparently, we were all, like, right. In an interview with tvguide.ca, Justin Chambers, aka Izzie’s boyfriend, Alex, let some poop drop. To wit: “Izzie has cancer, so I’m there to support her.”
Oops.
Not that the news is all that shocking, given what has happened with Izzie so far this season. I mean, she spent half the season sleeping with Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), which is all well and good except for one teensy problem: he’s dead. That gives “bed death” a whole new meaning.
We have since learned that he was some kind of manifestation of Izzie’s subconscious, there to tell her that she was really, really sick.
Izzie did what any forthright person would do — she snuck her lab-work into her interns’ case files to get a diagnosis. To her relief, the blood was anemic, so everything was fine — except for another teensy problem: the blood-work was not hers. With rumors flying that Heigl and costar T.R. Knight want off the show, is cancer her wish come true? Chambers was less clear in that regard: I would expect Alex to shut down a little bit if something awful happens to Izzie, but these are opportunities to see his chivalrous side and his true love for her, so there should be some interesting stuff coming up. We’ll know more Thursday, when Izzie’s interns finally diagnose the “right” blood. But how do you want this storyline to resolve? Has the time come for Izzie Stevens to join Denny in the happily-ever-afterlife? Or is this just Rhimes’ Emmy-worthy gift to Heigl? Submitted by on March 10, 2009 - 9:00am. |

Not to be rude...but this
Not to be rude...but this is old news. Anyone who follows Grey's has known for months that Izzie had cancer...and they've already basically said that this won't necessarily be a death sentence for her.
Just because she has cancer doesn't mean she'll die (not that I care about anyone on that show except for Callie, Arizona and Cristina).

Ya kinda been building up
How rude!
Just kidding.
Actually, though, I beg to differ. I do follow Grey's and, although we indeed have known something serious is wrong with Izzie, we didn't know what it was for sure until the patient actually confronted Izzie about the misdiagnosis. Plus, Shonda has been misleading us on so many things, I'm not inclined to just accept her word that this won't be the end of Izzie.
I am willing to admit that I might've missed something, though. I watch Grey's with one eye closed these days.
I watch Grey too
...and the whole Denny thing for me was very "A Beautiful Mind" film, about John Nash and his paranoid schizofrenia where he could "see, talk and interact" with people that were not real, which it made sense. When she did the tests then I thought ok, brain tumor it is.
Maybe they are implying that she may die, and about to do a long dramatic cancer treatment and posible brain surgery by Dr. Shepherd saving her!! Anyway, it is obvius that Heigl has been very active in
sorta questionablefilms lately and it would make sense that she would want to keep doing films instead of tv, and of course, leave the show with a dramatic exit.We could only be so lucky to
Die Already
Ausiello reported months ago that it was a Brain Aneurysm. I really don't care how she dies just as long as she dies and gets off the show already. Her acting (and T.R. Knight's) completely changed 2 seasons ago. It wasn't even as if they playing their characters anymore. Instead they were just being themselves... annoying and self righteous.
I've never read one nice thing about Katherine Heigl. I think her fame went to her head way too quickly. It's obvious she wants to be the next Julia Roberts. The only thing is she doesn't have Julia's charisma or charm. After she talked trash about Knocked Up, I lost all respect for her.
Good riddance!
Agreed, agreed, and
Cannot STAND Izzie, and Katherine Heigl. And this is coming from a Roswell fan as well.
I concur!
I haven't liked Katherine Heigl since her days on Roswell. Glad to know that I'm not the only one.
I can deal with Meredith but Izzie? Killing off Izzie would make me like Grey's again. Ha! Actually, it would take more than killing off one character to make me like the show but I'll admit I still watch it. I can't seem to advert my eyes.
I never liked the Izzy
I'm a bit surprised...
... by all the Heighl bashing. Just because she spoke the truth about Greys Anatomy, and about Knocked up?
We all know that the creative minds over at Grey's are known for destroying storylines, and Heigl was one of the only actors to call them on it with her Emmy withdrawl.
They took her character from a strong woman, to a flakey bimbo whos story line revolves around her poor choices in men (George, and the ridiculous Dead Denny).
I've got respect for her as an actress, but as for the character of Izzie, another Greys Anatomy creative trainwreck.
It feels like old news
It feels like old news because its been going on for an age but I think this is the first time anyone on the show has confirmed Izzy is really sick. Which begs the question, who cares?
I stopped caring about Izzy when she started hating on Callie and her warped relationship with George (dry heave) Saying that nothing compares to the shiteness that is the Denny Izzy story line. Denny is a manifestation of Izzie’s subconscious? What a load of shit, this show has tanked big time and they are heading for the big death scene I suppose with white lights and Denny at the end of a tunnle with little angel wings beaconing Izzy.
God I cant believe I used to enjoy this show but that could be because it used to be entertaining and had great character actors and now it has great character actors wondering what the fuck is going on.
The Writers should be let go as the magic and chemistry of their writing has obviously not been sustained in the long run. - Yeah thats right, fuck you Shonda!
"As a lesbian I resent your laughter and all laughter" - Sarah Silverman
Not looking good
If that mole she had biopsied is a malignant melanoma, coupling that with the neurological signs is baaad news for the ghost whisperer. Brain mets. Goodye Dr. Stevens. Unless this is what brings the newly bearded Dr. Shepherd out of hiding from a cave somewhere in the middle east to perform her life-saving surgery.
Could be something else, though. She could just be raving mad. Or maybe she'll just become a lesbian for an episode and then get lost in the car park. That seems like a reasonable way to end her time on the show, no?
Bwah!
Why all the Heigl hatred?
I hadn't heard about the Izzie/cancer thing. Two seasons ago, I would have cared. Now I couldn't give a rat's ass.
But regarding Katherine Heigl herself, when I heard that she had withdrawn her name for Emmy consideration, I thought "Wow - that took some balls!" I understand that it could be interpreted as biting the hand that feeds her but let's be honest, by saying Izzie didn't have any Emmy-worthy material, she was basically saying what many of us have been saying for a long time.
And as for trash-talking Knocked Up, all she said was that it was "a little sexist". Which it kinda is! Funny movie but yes, women are portrayed as humourless shrews compared to their goofy male counterparts. I really don't understand the bashlack on that one.
Also, around the time of the Isaiah Washington debacle, Heigl was the only one who actually said what everyone was thinking when she said something like "That guy just shouldn't be allowed talk in public. Period." The rest of the cast was quite pc and tight-lipped about it but she spoke her mind.
Is there something awful about her that I don't know? Does she kick puppies or something?
- My mother made me a homosexual.
- If I send her the wool, will she make me one?
Exactly
I totally agree with you. She's got some serious courage to speak out about what everyone else was thinking but to dumb to say aloud. The character of Izzie I lost touch with a few seasons back, but I remember her spunk from the first few and that's the character I fell in love with... not this lost puppy who seems to be walking the halls of Seattle Grace now. I loved Katharine in Roswell and frankly the only reason I started watching Grey's is because I saw a promo with her in it. Bring back the old Izzie!
Katharine Heigl = awesome
Izzie Stevens = disappointing and worthless (at least currently)
cancer the answer?
does everyone have to be killed by cancer?
ie: dana
now izzy,
hopefully not.
Elevator Shaft!!!
Couldn't they have her die by falling down an elevator shaft on her way to chemo? I mean, that would be the kind of meta-commentary that would be just too good!
If the actor disses the writers, then it is the only solution. Just ask Joey. I miss "Friends"!
HAHAHAHAHA... I miss
HAHAHAHAHA...
I miss Friends too!
Meh.
I could care less about Izzie. We've all known that she was going to leave eventually. I'm still mad that they gave up Callica sex for Dead-Denny sex. Ew.
I'm feeling Saxy...
Geez...
I guess I'm for the underdog here... I've enjoyed Katherine Heigl since Roswell and have been a big Izzy supporter from the beginning of Grey's Anatomy even when she barely had a storyline, even when they took it too far with Denny "the ghost".
I like Katherine Heigl... she may be lacking the filter that makes most of us stop, weigh our words and thoughts and speak more carefully, but she's truthful and tells it like it is (even when it may only be in her mind) and she's not worried about the outcome, which is kind of nice and far too rare in Hollywood, where most everyone has secrets, weighs their words far too much and skulks around.
Whether Katherine continues on the show or moves on to greener pastures (considering the show starting drastically going downhill with the departure of Addison and then the whole dismissal of Brooke Smith) I wish her well and am happy to have her as one of the "straight but not narrow" LGBTQ supporters in Hollywood! When she stuck up for T.R. Knight that sealed the deal in my book!

Heigl
I agree with the last few commentators.
1. She was absolutely right to speak out about knocked up. I, for one, am sick of all these comedies being churned out by Hollywood in which women are nothing more than an afterthought or a 'sexualised' prize for the men.
2. I agree. It takes balls to say you don't deserve a prize. The writing on Grey's is appalling these days.
3. She stood up for her gay cast mate. That also took balls.
The only thing not to like is her rubbish character in Greys, and that's not Heigl's fault.
pretty sure
Good thing IFC isn't
Good thing IFC isn't writing the story. She'd be DEAD within three weeks!
Yeah...
I don't like Izzie's storyline. Ever since Denny died she has really gone to hell. That whole George thing? I mean, REALLY? You fell in love with THE GUY, mourned him terribly, then had sex, drunk with George, then decided she was in love with HIM? George? Really? REALLY? r-e-a-l-l-y? (I'm sorry, I'm like one season late in my criticism haha).
When I saw the "I'm here for you... I'm here for you... I'm here for you" episode, I just crashed. I would've liked it more if she had just gone nuts. Literally. Unresolved mourning issues. They connected the whole the patient they stole the heart from with Denny, so i figured it just all came back... Until it continued... and continued... and continued... and continued.
They'd been careful -kinda- with most characters. At least, in more credible ways (although I still can't figure out quite well how Meredith went from being in love with Sheperd to a full committment phobic, but ok -now she's kinda normal again-).
I've never liked Grey. I still can't believe she's the "main" character. Haha. She has no personality, at all. I do like Lexie more. She's so alive. So truthful. And I actually like the whole Mark-Lexie thing... I still love the show, who am I kidding.
BTW, how about that Addison appearance? God, that woman is gor-geous! Ah.. Addison.
Well it makes me sad that
Well it makes me sad that she's going to be leaving of course. I mean, she was there since day one. Plus I'll miss her quirkyness but when I think about all the ridiculous storylines I had to sit through... well, I don't mind that she's leaving.
Hopefully a more interesting character with a better story comes along. *cough* Addison! Gosh, bring her back from Private Practice already! Never liked that show anyhow...
shes an awesome character,
