"In Plain Sight" is a little too plainI’m frustrated and I blame it on Mary McCormack.
No, not that kind of frustration, although McCormack certainly could provoke it. I’m talking about the feeling that comes when a highly anticipated show falls short, as is the case with USA’s In Plain Sight.
In Plain Sight, which was called Mary Sunshine when first announced, stars McCormack as Mary Shannon, a U.S. Marshal who relocates and protects people in the witness protection program. Mary is a strong, independent woman who is good at her job and is treated as an equal by other officers, including her quirky partner, Marshall (Fred Weller). Marshal Marshall, heh!
Sounds like a great premise, right? Early reviews suggested that In Plain Sight would serve as the female equivalent to another successful USA series, Burn Notice. I even read a comparison to the much-lamented Karen Sisco. Plus, the fab Lesley Ann Warren plays Mary’s mom, Jinx. Cool.
The series seemed to have a lot going for it. Guest stars so far have included Dave Foley, Sherry Stringfield and Jane Adams. The episode titles are very punny: “Hoosier Daddy,” “Trojan Horst,” “Who Shot Jay Arnstein.” The show has pop culture references galore — a mob informant named Frankie Nuts, tuna casserole with Velveeta and a potato chip crust, and Columbo, Sex and the City and Showgirls allusions. Dang, I want to like this show. But I don’t. As seems to be en vogue for strong TV women, Mary’s personal life is a mess. For one thing, she’s not very nice — OK, she’s a bitch. She’s always in a bad mood and treats Marshall like a lackey. Mary’s mom is a flake and her sister, Brandy (Nicole Hiltz), is a crook. Her ballplayer boyfriend Raphael (Cristian de la Fuente) is, for no reason I can see, crazy about her, but she seems to have no real interest in him outside the bedroom.
If Mary’s home life served the story, I could forgive the cliché. But it adds nothing. And despite the built-in tension of protecting federal witnesses, the plot lines are just sort of blah. The writing doesn’t live up to the show’s promise. And that’s frustrating. So why blame Mary McCormack? Because she won me over in The West Wing and I want to see more of her. Because she deserves a breakout role. And because she looks so good in a tank top.
Have you watched In Plain Sight? What do you think? Does the show deserve a chance to get better? Submitted by on July 7, 2008 - 5:00pm. |

I Think
I think that each episode is hit or miss. Last nights show was pretty good but the one before it I didnt even get through. I do think that it deserves a chance to get better. I'll keep tuning in, but if I make it through a whole epiode, that is another story.
Agree on Mary
She sure does look good in a tank top ;-)
We don't have the show over here in the UK so can't comment on it, can only agree with you on Mary

Taking off - the novel, coming soon. Starring Katie, a lesbian in London...
In the meanwhile, you can read reviews of films and books with lesbian/bi characters and/or taking place in London at www.takingoff.org
Couldn't get past the pilot
I'm with you- I had such high hopes for this series and I was very excited that a strong female lead was on TV again. And witness protection- we haven't really seen that yet- seemed interesting.
I wish the show had been more like the Law and Order series in which you rarely know about the personal life of the characters and each glimps makes it more of a voyeur type of experience. But these writers decided to throw up all the personal information in the first episode. I was too upset to try and watch it again for fear of being dissappointed.

I must be the exception
I must be the exception here, I actually REALLY like this show. Seriously.
It's one of the few shows that I actually make time to watch. Sure, it's not always shakepeare, but then, what is? But on the whole (actually, last night was the only episode that kinda dragged for me so far) it's been really excellent.
I really like how flawed and difficult-to-like she is. She's a bitch, yup, but then, so am I. And honestly, I'm kinda enjoying having a woman there that doesn't apologise for being aggressive and assertive, and taking guys on, on their own terms. Do I always like what she says or does? Nope, but that's not the point of the show for me.
And yeah, so maybe her boyfriend is just there for her to have sex with; awesome in my book. I like the juxtaposition in their roles, where he is the emotional and softer one, and she is the hard-arsed unemotional one. She doesn't show emotion around people hardly at all, so it's entirely consistent with the character.
I was really surprised when I saw the title of this post, because at first I thought I read it wrong. But then I can't stand Lesley Ann Warren, or her character, so maybe our tastes are a tad different.
But then, I don't get how people can watch Tila Tequila *shrug* so go figure ...

me too
hotness!
I absolutely love the show! It's definitely not as intelligent as West Wing, but Mary's hot in a tank top AND as a "bitch" - she's a tough cookie, but sweet at heart. There's been some significant character dev - with the boyfriend, marshall getting shot, mary and mom re: absentee dad; not to mention the drama with the witnesses.
I'm going to keep watching. yummy.
Also - for the longest time I thought Mary was Maria Bello. Anyone else get confused? those two are twins!
Glad you posted
Mary McCormack
Formulaic
It's too formulaic. And not in the good "Oh, it's another pint of Ben & Jerry's [your fave here] nice and comforting ice cream" but the oh-so-predictable-with-not-much-else-to-offer kind of formulaic.
While I do think Mary is HOT, and since there's NO Ladycops aspect to the show, I couldn't get past the first eppie.
still don't know.......
Why isn't this show in the 9:00 time slot. It has less violence then Law and Order which is one of my favorite shows. I don't think Mary is tough enough and there is too much comedy in it. Why did the young BBall player faint when he got roughed up a bit? Looked like he was just slapped! That is when I turned it off. Maybe I missed the best part but I doubt it! Give me Angie Dickinson "Police Woman" or Cagney and Lacey anyday over this show!
trailblazers often catch flak ...
... from those they're blazing the trail for. :(
what's wrong with showing men in more helpless roles? if a woman was shown fainting when slapped, no one would bat an eyelash. but when a big strong man falls when he's slapped *gasp*, suddenly it's cause to stop tuning in?
c'mon now. isn't there enough sexist double standard in the world?
i agree with several of the above reviewers that I LIKE this show. i LIKE Mary McCormack's hard-ass-with-a-heart-of-gold character Mary Shannon. i LIKE that he's more invested emotionally in the relationship than she is. i LIKE that she uses him for sex from time to time. i LIKE that she "treats Marshall like a lackey" (actually, she doesn't. she loves him like a younger brother. she's smarter and more mature, and she knows it.) i LIKE that macho hetero guys are shown liking ballroom dancing; disliking fighting; and perenially pining after tough women. and i LIKE that the main character is grouchy and unsentimental and tough and principled. an ultra-competent straight-shooting woman. good for her. that's what i want to see more of in the real world.
god knows we get tons & tons of cottony soft, sugary sweet, morally-gooey, only-good-for-sex, eye-rollingly incompetent female characters thrown at us to last us 10 lifetimes. each.
how many tough female characters are there on broadcast TV like Mary McCormack's character?
how many female characters LEAD a TV drama by herself, period?
although many women don't want to think about it in this ostensibly advanced day & age, the scarcity of woman-led TV dramas since TV was invented = any woman-led TV drama is still Blazing A New Trail.
keeping an open mind is the least we can do.
ever since i saw Mary McCormack paired with Minnie Driver in the 2001 film "High Heels and Low Lifes" (Robin Hood via Thelma & Louise), i was a fan of both.
... when i saw this blog, i thought the writer witnessed something sexist or homophobic or racist in "In Plain Sight". nope. McCormack (the actress) is blamed for being ... 'not likeable enough.' wow. [not a peep about the flaws in all the male-led CSI, Law & Order, etc. shows -- too extreme, too violent, too gory, too nihilistic, to name a few flaws.] but, when a woman as smart & talented as McCormack manages to help get a woman-led show onto the crowded airwaves (what? the audience sees things from HER point of view? what a concept!), rather than clap our hands or at least hold our tongues, we sniff our noses and turn our backs. ...
i guess some women think 4 or 5 female-led tv dramas out of dozens & dozens & dozens male-led tv dramas, are simply too many. then by all means, keep eating your own, while i go to usa's website and watch a woman save some lives, and unapologetically kick some ass.
give her some space, and some benefit of the doubt, will ya.
"Be the change you want to see in the world."
*nods*
Can I just say how much I agree with your post, you said a lot of the same things I said above, but then went further with them ... well done! :)
I remember when 'Law & Order: Trial By Jury' first came out, and ALL the major roles were held by women, some of whom were seriously NOT NICE. I really enjoyed that too. Course, we all know what happened to that show.

I wholeheartedly agree
Jeez, what is it with this whole 'bashing' of the show?
While reading this blog all I could think of was "Is she watching the same thing as I am?"
She doesn't treat Marshall like a lackey, she cares deeply for him it is just the way their relationship is and Marshall doesn't seem to have a problem with it and the only thing he wanted was some 'him' moments instead of only 'her' moment. They adressed it, they agreed and voila.
As for the whole 'homelife' thing, a lot of women are better at handling their jobs then handling their homelife. Sure the mom and sister may need a little work, but give it a rest, we're only a few episodes in!
And hello! A women-led show! We need more of that!
The Way The Cookie Crumbles
No Borders AllowedI Agree>>
I agree with every word you wrote.
Well said.
I freakin' LOVE this show!
Don't get me wrong...
I'm certainly all for women-led dramas - we need all we can get. I just want great women-led dramas and I couldn't get into this one.
Just to clarify - I didn't say that McCormack isn't likeable. I was talking about her character, Mary. I tried to love her because I do love McCormack. I just don't find a reason to be on her side.
i've tried desperately
to like it. I really have. Mostly because she is a strong woman character on TV and we need those. That and there is totally the tanktop thing.
However, I'm with you. I have problems with it. And especially after this week's episode. It's going the way of Saving Grace, where all the personality quirks that I would love to see fleshed out are being pissed away early on (in Saving Grace, by the whole thing with the priest - didn't want to spoil for those who haven't seen last season's ending). I'll keep trying, but like Angela said, I may not make it through the complete episodes.
Eyecandy is eyecandy afterall.
I like the show, though
I like the show, though there are some episodes that are not that great. I like Mary and her grouchy ways. I like Marshal how he would spout out the most unsuspecting things like philosophy, psychology, or medical knowledge.
The mother and the sister I could do without, or it would be better if they had different personalities
Don't blame Mary - blame USA
Don't blame Mary - blame USA Network; their shows have a way of being pretty good but not good enough. I cannot put it into words but it seems to me that while the USA original series have good combinations of drama and comedy, they are not quite edgy enough to be taken seriously.
Mary McCormack is a good actress, there is no doubt there. I saw her in Boeing-Boeing on Broadway a little over a week ago (with an AE favorite Gina Gershon) and she was INCREDIBLE. She definitely deserved that Tony nom. I urge everyone to go see her play a feisty German flight attendant (with lesbian tendencies I might add.)
Agreed
I have to give In Plain
Mary Mary....
I can def relate.... I was a little disappointed when the show aired, it certainly didn't help that they kept showing the same episode over and over one day either. I don't think many folks will TiVo this plain show, Burn Notice is so much better.
XOXO Zuri
Boeing Boeing?
Short on plot
I have been enjoying this show - Mary's character is surprising and entertaining, and the episode with Dave Foley was particularly exciting. But this Sunday's episode with the gambling was short on plot and long on cheesy cliches. Very disappointing.
There is nothing plain about Mary McCormack!
I have to strongly disagree. Mary is complicated. Sure she is pretty rough around the edges and even a bit mean and defensive, but that is part of what makes her character seem more real. We all have our bad moments. And it is not as if they are not emphasizing the fact that she is indeed pretty flawed and has some BIG issues to work out.
The acting is good. Great guest stars. The writing is witty and fun. Marshall is hilarious! I have to say that I think the show is living up to my expectations. It is a detective/law enforcement dramedy. Take it for what it is. And I think it is pretty good!
Cpmplicated
I LOVE this show! Mary is
I LOVE this show! Mary is complicated, flawed, rough, somewhat intolerant of being put out, but still able to find the humanity within. She's great at her job and sucks at relationships. WOW! What a novelty. Like we all haven't known a few people like that in our lives!
This show is very well written for a procedural and the performances are excellent. She is the female version of so many flawed but likeable male characters we've seen over the years. It's nice to have one we can call our own.
This ain't no Women's Murder Club. (Another show I enjoyed, but for different reasons) and the fact it isn't is why I like it.
She isn't a cookie cutter female character for once. What a nice surprise!
Not really watched it yet
Tapped it , waiting to watch it, but my roommate got fired and is taking over TV.
I do notice that her stance seems a little too forced, like I am a super hero ..
We shall see.

Lost in the Wild Roses
Reminds me of Bionic Woman
It's okay, but nothing special. Still...
Still... when I find myself wanting more Marshall and less Mary, there's a problem with the show.
And honestly? If I want bitchy and complicated, Holly Hunter does it a lot better in Saving Grace.
Add me to the list of
Add me to the list of people who love the show! I think that it has steadily gotten better since the pilot which is always a good sign. I also have warmed up to mary's family as the series has gone on and think that Lesley Anne Warren does a fabulous job playing the mom...
I would have to say that Marshall is probably my favorite character... He is hilarious and i love how he handles Mary. There's definitely some chemistry between them but im glad that they havent tried to put them together just yet..
And yes, Mary is a "bitch" but she definitely has her soft moments and seems to really care about her witnesses.. I thought it was really touching in the last episode when she broke down at the gamblers meeting and also when the older brother started crying on her shoulder...

How about Renee
I like the way you think
IFrom what I've seen, it's good.
I only saw the pilot and I liked it. I liked the partner and Lesley Ann Warren. It had a pretty good storyline and pretty much everyone played the part well. The little sister annoyed me though...
I really need to start watching it again. It's a good show.
I just want to love it soooooo bad
Ya'll are cool
You gotta give the show a chance...
All new shows need a chance to breathe and grow. I like "In Plain Sight". The premise is good, the writing is good, and Mary McCormack is developing an interesting, flawed character. Sure, her family is screwed up (whose isn't?), she doesn't always do the right thing (who does?), but it is still fascinating to watch her do her thing. WITSEC never had a better representative than this show.
OK
Love it
