Helen Hunt considering "Parenthood"

Now that Maura Tierney has withdrawn from Parenthood to focus on getting well, NBC has set its sights on a veteran TV comedian to step in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Helen Hunt is the network’s first choice.

We haven’t seen Hunt on series television since she played Jamie Buchman on Mad About You. Mock me if you must, but I loved that show — it still makes me laugh when I see reruns. (Which reminds me, why did you stop airing reruns, Oxygen?)

Hunt won four Emmys and three Golden Globes for Mad About You and has gone on to an award-winning film career. In fact, in 1998 she won an acting Triple Crown — an Emmy for Mad and an Oscar and Golden Globe for As Good as it Gets.

In 2007, Hunt made her directorial debut in Then She Found Me, a remarkable film worth a spot on your Netflix queue if you haven’t seen it.

THR reports than Hunt is considering the offer. As sad as I am that Tierney had to drop out of Parenthood, I can’t think of a better replacement. Hunt can bring the class and the humor in a way that few actresses can. And the thought of seeing her on TV again every week makes me very, very happy.

    I had a huge crush on Helen Hunt growing up (c'mon, why else would you watch Twister over and over... when you live in OK and are scared shitless of tornados?).

    I also love Maura Tierny and hope that she successfully battles her cancer. If anyone should try to replace her, it's Helen Hunt.

    I think Helen would be a great choice. I also heard that Bonnie Bedelia was going to be in this series. Can't wait to see who they end up casting.

    I had pretty much given up on Parenthood when Maura Tierney had to step aside (my prayers are with her) but Helen Hunt could definitely convince me to watch it!! I loved Mad About You!! I used to stay up really late to watch reruns when I was younger!  Would love to see her back on TV!!

    Love Helen Hunt and loved the movie...although I generally hate television renditions of movies...

    Ditto on everything you said, linster.  Was really looking forward to Maura on the show, and was saddened when I heard the news (all the best wishes to her.)  But I've missed Helen Hunt since she's been out of the spotlight so long (Then She Found Me came and went like a flash), and it would be awesome to see her in something where people can remember how good she is. 

    And I also had a HUGE grade school and high school crush on Helen. And I realized in recent years that, during high school, I wanted to grow up to be Paul Reiser in Mad About You:  I wanted to be a documentary filmmaker living in New York and married to Helen Hunt--all of my teenage aspirations boiled down to a single television sitcom.

    Don't know anything about "Parenthood," but it's nice to see I wasn't the only one with a HUGE crush on Helen Hunt!  :-)  Back in middle/high school, before I knew it was a crush, but I adored "Mad About You."

    I remember the first time I saw her on my TV. It was "The Swiss Family Robinson," and she was everywhere after that. A sweetheart and a friend to grow up with, a slightly older sister teaching me that family is important and drugs are bad.
