Grown-up “Alice” comes to Syfy

While we’re waiting to see what Tim Burton will do with Alice in Wonderland next spring, another Alice will give us a modern take on the adventure. Alice, a two-part miniseries set 150 years after the original trip to Wonderland, will premier Dec. 6 on Syfy — and it looks like a win.

Let’s start with the promotional trailer.

Alice Hamilton, played by Caterina Scorsone, is far from the somewhat quaint little girl of Lewis Carroll’s original tale. This Alice is an independent, assertive twenty-something woman who teaches martial arts.

But, as is the case with all of us, Alice has issues, one of which is in the relationship department. She wants things to work with her boyfriend Jack, but panics when he proposes with an extravagant engagement ring that has been in his family for generations. Alice turns him down, then watches in horror as a well-dressed group of men (“The Suits”) kidnap Jack in hopes of getting the jewel. Alice follows as they take Jack through the looking glass — and finds herself in the parallel universe of Wonderland.

The evil Queen of Hearts, played by Oscar-winner Kathy Bates, rules Wonderland and she is far from hospitable to Wonderland’s visitor, still remembering a previous Alice who “brought down the whole house of cards.”

In this rendering, Wonderland is a totalitarian state where the queen controls the masses through the use of magic teas and potions. To tell you more would spoil the story, but sci-fi fans will enjoy the ways director Nick Willing has twisted the tale.

Other big names include Matt Frewer as The White Knight, Colm Meaney as the King of Hearts, Harry Dean Stanton as Caterpillar and Tim Curry as Dodo.

Alice sounds original enough that perhaps it will escape comparison with Burton’s version and become a hit. I hope so, because maybe then someone will actually produce flying flamingo cycles.

Are you ready to see a stronger, more modern Alice? Will you watch Syfy’s version?

Not sure about this.

Aha... bizarre. Seems like a follow-up to the recent Tinman/Oz "remake". It might be trying too hard, though, especially with the big-screen movie coming out so soon. You can only do so many quirky versions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

I loved Tin Man! That may have just been because of Zooey Deschanel...

I loved Tin Man so much more

I loved Tin Man so much more than I expected to. I have pretty low expectations for this too, so maybe it'll be just as surprisingly wonderful.

i love new twists

on old stories and i love syfy. i am so there. can't wait to see what they do with the story. i even enjoyed the take in warehouse 13 of the looking glass. i think it would be cool if syfy could do a sci-fi version of all the old classics (little mermaid, snowwhite, etc.)and make 'em for 0the adults.

tim curry...

That man alone will make me watch it. I admire his acting diversity far more than that of Johnny Depp. Add on the fact that its, albeit another, Alice twist I will be watching it.

I have been a Caterina

I have been a Caterina Scorsone fan for years so I will watch to see her. But in general if she was not in it I don't think I would be tuning in. Although now that I have read this review it does sound more interesting then I first thought.

Ok, so slighty off topic,

Ok, so slighty off topic, but I cannot bring myself to refer this this channel as "Syfy".  I liked the super nerdy connotations of the old name! If that even is why they changed it. I just don't understand...

The Looking Glass Wars

I saw the trailer to Alice and it reminded me that it's alot like Frank Beddor's The Looking Glass Wars series where Wonderland is this futuristic place. It's a great series and the third book just came out and while I haven't read book 3, it's a rather engrossing series that's in development for the big screen.

I'm looking forward to this one.

Alice every day...

I actually read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland this year, so I've been mildly obsessed with everything Alice. Just two days ago, I watched the first half of this really creepy Czech version with stop-motion animation involving an evil taxidermy stuffed rabbit and a vast array of dead animal parts, sock puppets and evil-looking baby dolls. I think the SyFy production will be much more fun to watch.

SyFy?

How much lazier do the younger generations want to get? First it was SciFi. Is five letters too much to type out? I'm sure it'll end up being the S.F channel...

Alice, hey? Well, willing to give anything a try.

Alice!

This looks fantastic! I love reading the Alice in Wonderland books and their querky-ness. I am really looking forward to the Tim Burton version (Helena Bonham-Carter hellooo!!!), however, this looks fantastic, and different enough that it won't be like two similar rehashes of the same thing. *crosses fingers* I will be watching this when I can!
dadevi's picture

Um...No

Why is Syfy so set on ruining my birthday(December 6th yay!)? Tin Man was bad enough. Now they have to ruin Alice in Wonderland for me? I'm sorry, but having a large CGI and costume budget does not cover the inadequecies of bad script writing, which most Syfy movies have in spades. I'll only watch to see Tim Curry, and quickly change the channel to catch some boxing.
