The "Get Smart" poster and trailer go undercoverCinematical published the first teaser poster for Get Smart this week, and Steve Carrell has gone undercover. Under very beautiful cover.
We should all be so lucky as to have Anne Hathaway's hair covering our faces. (Minds out of the gutter, people.) Carrell and Hathaway are playing Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, the roles originally played by Don Adams and Barbara Feldon.
I loved Get Smart when I was growing up. When I did something wrong, I said, "Sorry about that, Chief." My parents didn't always see the humor. Once in church, the pianist sat down with the bench out a little too far and stumbled. I said, a little too loudly, "Missed it by this much." My parents pretended not to see the humor in that, either, but Daddy had to suppress a giggle. What I remember most, though, is the gadgets. The chauffeur-cap camera. The laser-beam pen. The shoe phone. I really, really wanted a shoe phone.
The television series won several Emmys for best comedy series, and "Get Smart: The Complete Series" recently won top honors at Home Media's DVD Awards. What made this show great was that the comedy was focused on the characters — the spy plots were secondary. And as the hippest show at the time, Get Smart attracted guest stars like Danny Thomas, Steve Allen, Joey Bishop, Carol Burnett and Johnny Carson. Steve Carrell seems a good choice to play the 21st-century Max, if the trailer is any indication. But a remake of a show like Get Smart has to be great to be successful. (Bewitched, anyone?) And early reports have not been kind. If you want details and spoilers, you can read more here. Still, miracles can happen in the editing room, so hopefully by its release next year, the film will be great. Would you believe ... pretty good?
Are you a Get Smart fan? What was your favorite spy gadget? What do you think of Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway as Max and 99? What catchphrase got you in trouble? Submitted by on November 16, 2007 - 2:03pm. |

Well, I have never heard of Get Smart. Is that bad?:p Probably long before "my" time... But I like the movie poster and trailer, so that's enough reason for me to go and watch it. It's probaly gonna take some time before it's released here, but I'll keep and eye on it.

Get Smart
I grew up on Get Smart, and Barbara Feldon/99 was one of my very first crushes. And she still makes me melt! I think the shoe phone was my favourite gadget, but remember Max's balloon coat? and how 99 used her diamond ring to cut her way out of the phone booth when it was flooded with water? and her compact case/radio? and the gadgets on Max's car? and the cone of silence? and, and....
OK, I've always been a bit obsessed.
Favourite catchphrase? "Good thinking, 99!" Never got me into trouble, though.
Will I see the movie? Hmmmm... I love Steve Carrell and in fact I think he can pull it off. But...not even the original cast managed a decent movie ("Nude Bomb" anyone?), and I just can't imagine anyone filling Barbara Feldon's shoes. I think I'll pass, thanks.
And I've just remembered something...didn't 99 have a pink pistol? Look out Bill O'Reilly!

Pink pistol
I LOVED Get Smart! I would
GET SMART! shoe phone, man. shoe phone.
I have high hopes for the movie. Carrell seems perfect. I watched it the show when i was a tiny person on Nick at Night. I was thoroughly amused then, and I can't wait to see the movie. The shoe is the obvious classic. I know Bewitched wasn't the best, but it was good enough for me. I loved Nicole (and her gal pals including Ms. Chenoweth!!! and the FABULOUS Heather Burns. I love her in Sandra Bullock movies, and she was hysterical in Bewitched.) Anyway, I can't wait. I haven't watched the trailer yet, but the teaser made me giggle.
Plus, I kinda love Anne Hathaway. She makes me smile. And Duane Johnson is making me happy as of late. He rocks Southland Tales man.
Why did you have to mention this?
big fan
i love Anne Hathaway and Steve Carrell i'm hopeing this is going to be good. i'll probably like it even if its not, i'm a sucker for Anne Hathaway.

I do love Get Smart and have enjoyed catching reruns.
But I think my age group remembers Inspector Gadget more.
I LOVED INSPECTOR GADGET! So when I see Get Smart reruns and hear Don Adams voice it makes me want to go watch Inspector Gadget. Wowsers!
OO this I'm gonna definitely check out
You know, I didn't have my mind in the gutter until you sent it there. Now I can't seem to get it back. >_>
(okok I can't seem to get it back from there since Devil Wears Prada, but it's just that it sank deeper...)

And if I die today I'll be the Happy Phantom...
Can't Wait!
Thanks for posting this! I was a big fan of the original series, and when I heard they are doing a film remake of it, I was psyched! Steve Carrell just have that cluelessness that Smart has. And Anne Hathaway, I think I can dig her as 99.
How I remember the shoe-phone!
I think the following two things make me a bad lesbian:
1. The first thing I thought of when I saw that poster was, "Wow, I really like her coat."
2. I am far too excited about The Rock being in this movie.
WIth those two embarrassing things out of the way, I just have to mention that I really hope the Steve Carrell backlash that is starting to develop won't undermine this movie. It looks smart, fun, and, if the fact that the spoof of it is coming out a week later is any indication, self-deprecatingly humorous.

great post!
Barbara Feldon / Anne Hathaway

Add another one who had a massive crush on Barbara Feldon, and who has also been known to utter the phrase "Good thinking, 99!" I wanted that shoe phone!
As for Anne Hathaway, eh, I find her rather wimpish, so I don't know how she'd work in a remake. For it to be successful, it'd have to be really good at sporking the retro sexist stuff. I actually think Nicole Kidman did a reasonable job with Bewitched, but whatisname played it too straight, and it fell flat.
