Generation X-mas: Are your holiday movies snarky or sappy? Are George and Mary Bailey perennial guests at your holiday celebration?
Or is Ralphie Parker's quest for a Red Ryder BB gun a more relevant Christmas story?
That's the question posed by Time last week. In a 2006 poll, A Christmas Story was the favorite holiday movie among ages 18–41, while the older demographic picked It's a Wonderful Life or Miracle on 34th Street. Perhaps, speculates the article, Generations X and Y find Ralphie's memories a bit closer to their own.
As one who falls squarely in the Baby Boomer generation, I'm unwilling to sacrifice either George or Ralphie. Sure, A Christmas Story is much more fun to watch with friends (especially if you take a drink whenever somebody says "you'll shoot your eye out"). But I always find a few melancholy hours during the holidays to curl up with my cats and cry my way through Bedford Falls. And I always have time to see the adorable face of an eight-year-old Natalie Wood as she comes to believe in Santa Claus.
What other movies make the holidays bright? Here are a few of mine. Christmas Vacation — Although I snobbishly claim not to like slapstick, this movie makes me laugh every time. And nothing says holiday spirit like a speech from Dad (Chevy Chase).
Scrooged — Of all the takeoffs on A Christmas Carol, this is my favorite. I confess a bias toward anything Bill Murray does, but Scrooged is so chock full of meta goodness that I catch something new with every viewing. Besides, Carol Kane is the Ghost of Christmas Present. The world needs more Carol Kane.
Love Actually — Yeah, I know it's sappy and sentimental. But it's also warm and funny and, eventually, a little gay. I have friends who just don't get why I love this movie. I could claim that I simply want to watch Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley and Laura Linney. Truth be told, though, I don't get why I love it, either. I just do.
Let's see. That's three snarky and three sappy. That makes me a snarky sap. How about you? How do you like your holiday movies? And what seasonal movies will you be watching between now and the New Year? Submitted by on December 4, 2007 - 5:30pm. |

Yay I'm first!!!
Love actually is actually one of my favorite movies. I love the movies where its all these seperate stories that come together. And I love The Holiday, its one of my Christmas movies. I do want to go and see This Christmas, I heard that was a good movie too.
"When I am right, no one remebers. When I am wrong, no one forgets."
"Sup Kare" "Effing Brian"
"Wha Happen????"
Love Actually!
This movie was soo awesome!!
I cried A LOT during that movie. >_< both happy and sad tears. Not to spoil anything but the movie can literally be heartbreaking and also so joyous you have to cry.

There are so many
A Christmas Carol (with George C. Scott)
A Muppet Christmas Carol
Scrooged
A Christmas Story
Elf
Home Alone
It's A Wonderful Life
Three versions of Miracle On 34th Street (original B/W, original colorized, that one with Dylan McDermott)
White Christmas
To say nothing of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer with its telling of the love story between Rudolph and Hermey.
Hermey was such a queen.
Since winter weather seems
Since winter weather seems to be taking its time coming to Texas, here is a list of movies I will watch to get in the holiday mood:
Elf
The Holiday
A Christmas Story
Miracle on 34th Street
Love Actually
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966)
Home Alone - only the first one
The Santa Clause - only the first one
My family is kind of strange...
We do watch "It's a Wonderful Life", but our usual holiday line-up goes something like:
Nightmare Before Christmas
The 5th Element
Twilight Zone episodes
Star Trek
Secretary
Cold Comfort Farm
Edward Scissorhands
I guess these are just kind of our "family movies".
Snarky Sap status ...
Muppet Christmas Carol .... sap 1
Home for the Holidays .... snarky 1 (I know it's a Thanksgiving film, but it's my prep movie for *any* holiday)
Love Actually .... sap 2 (Emma Thompson and Laura Linney and Bill Nighy ... I like it by default)
Scooge .... scary/sappy? (Albert Finney ... it's a family tradition ... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066344/)
Nightmare Before Christmas .... scary/sappy/snarky (I used to work for Disney ... it's been ingrained)
A Charlie Brown Christmas ... sappy 3 (c'mon ... you know you love it.)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas ... sappy/snarky (the original animated version)
And what’s he then that says I play the villain,
When this advice is free I give, and honest
What does it mean
...if you love the Hallmark movies that come out at X-mas? They are so emotionally manipulative and "B-star" packed I can't resist watching them while laughing through my tears.
Christmas? Christmas means dinner, dinner means death! Death means carnage; Christmas means carnage!
-Ferdinand the duck
It means...
that you're awesome. That's what it means.
And what’s he then that says I play the villain,
When this advice is free I give, and honest
Im just an all around
Im just an all around sap....
Christmas story (I even bought the DVD lol)
A Christmas Carol (1938 version)
I'll be home for Christmas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (I prefer the cartoon over the movie...)
Jingle all the way (this is such a guilty pleasure for me lol I mean Schwarzenegger? Argh... )
Scrooged is also a fave
And of course Home Alone 1 and 2
Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.
I heart...
I heart both Black Christmas and A Christmas Story- opposite ends of the film spectrum, but both from the late great Bob Clark.
And though it's embarassing to admit, since I was a kid I haven't been able to watch Nestor, The Long-Eared Christmas Donkey without bawling like a little baby. "Ears, Nestor..."

RankinBass Animated Christmas Specials
The only Christmas specials I love to watch over and over are the animated Christmas stories produced by RankinBass Productions in the 60s and early 70s. My favs were:
Rudolf the Rednose Reindeer
Santa Clause is Coming to Town
Frosty the Snowman
Little Drummer Boy
The Year Without a Santa Claus (love the Heat Miser Snow Miser song!)
Is it wrong to
be aroused by this post and pics?
Because this X-er hearts Rankin-Bass claymation.
(and It's a Wonderful Life. I cry every time I see it.)
I always thought Mrs. Claus
had a certain sump'in sump'in...
H.O.T.
Christmas? Christmas means dinner, dinner means death! Death means carnage; Christmas means carnage!
-Ferdinand the duck
I'm really a sap when it comes to Christmas....
we watched Rudolph last year in English before we got out for Christmas, and my friend and I just sat and joked about how Howie wanted to be a dentist....and whatever our tenth-grade brains could make out of that idea...it was horrible...*ahem* anyway...
Muppet Christmas Carol (My family would watch it every Christmas Eve, and I mean every Christmas Eve....until the damn VCR chewed it up. Grrr....)
It's a Wonderful Life (Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed just make me happy)
Miracle on 34th Street
Elf (Cutie-pie Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell at his zaniest/lovablest? what's not to love?)
Any sappy ABC Family or Hallmark Christmas movie that comes on at like, 3AM....
The Tangerine Bear (This sweet little kids movie about a bear whose mouth was sewn on upside down, so he can't smile....it's quite sappy....)
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (I <3 the cartoon and the live-action has some funny lines...)
And OH! I know it's not a Christmas movie, but that Hey Arnold! episode when Helga finds Mr. Hyun's daughter and sacrifices her boots! *swoons* makes me tear up every time!
You shot your eye out!!
We definittely roll out the snark at my house! How the grinch stole christmas is fine by me. A Christmas Story is a must see every year, plus the Home Alone Movies (1 and 2 usually) keeps us company as well. Love the Christmas comedies!
Don't be a slave to the unavailable!i'm dreaming of an old hollywood christmas
I love Jimmy Stewart, so It's a Wonderful Life is an absolute favorite. And while I like A Christmas Story, i feel like i've seen it enough. It's funny, but I can't watch it over and over again like It's a Wonderful Life. And I heart Natalie Wood, so of course I love Miracle on 34th Street. Other favorites are:
White Christmas--I can't believe no one else has mention this. Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby singing "counting my Blessings" makes me feel warm and cozy. And if seeing everyone come together to honor the old general doesn't tug at your heartstrings, check your pulse.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas (animated version)
Charlie Brown Christmas
Meet Me in St Louis--it's not exclusively a christmas movie, but what's the holidays without Judy singing "have youself a merry little christmas" in that heartbreaking way she does?
Holiday Inn--I like it, and I love Bing Crosby singing White Christmas on the movie set. On the other hand, there is that pesky racist depiction of that mamie character. While most of the movie is good, that makes me feel icky.
Miracle on 34th St
I luv luv Miracle on 34th St, it has to be the original in black/white with Natalie Wood.
Also love the lifetime movie "Ebbie" my favorite version of all the scrooge movies
The Santa Claus
I love The Santa Claus 1 and 2.
Rudolph
Mickey's Twice Upon A Christmas
Frosty the Snowman
Christmas with the Kranks
Home Alone 1 and 2
Prancer
Just to name a few....
Love Actually
christmas vacation
New tradition ...
My partner and I have a new holiday movie tradition ... we always watch The Family Stone together. It's hilarious and sweet at the same time and best of all, it really parallels my family which provides us with a lot of fodder for discussion ...
deaf character - I'm deaf, though no one in my family signs and so I get a true pleasure out of watching a family that fully includes the deaf person (actually played by a deaf person), plus the deaf character has a hearing partner & so do I ... though I have a lot of respect for the actors who learned the language, I do have to giggle sometimes at the signing.
gay character - once again that's me, though I'm a lesbian and the movie has two guys instead of two girls - still, we're represented and I do love the support the family shows
character of color - the entire family is white, except for the gay guy's partner, who's black ... my partner is Australian while I'm Polish-American, so I don't represent that category, however my brother's wife is black (Dominican)
the number of siblings - 5, 3 boys and 2 girls ... I'm the youngest of 5, 3 boys and 2 girls
even the personalities of some of the characters are frightenly similar to my sibilings.
Plus ... it has Rachel McAdams & Diane Keaton - gotta love them!
My Favorites...
...A Christmas Story
Black Christmas
Love Actually
Christmas Vacation (stay away from the sequel!!!)
Just Friends
Scrooged
Home Alone 1 & 2

I like both types of movies. I think there's room for the sap and the comedy/snark.
How about White Christmas or Holiday Inn. Who could resist Bing and Rosie Clooney?
One of my all time favorite Christmas offerings is Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol! I've had a hankering for Razzleberry Dressing since the first time I saw it.

The Muppets................
Christmas Carol - i watch this every year on christmas eve, tho i won't be able to this year as I'll be working damn the nursery!
I could blame the fact that I work with children as to why I love this film so much but that would be unfair I've been watching every year since i was 10 I even recently bought the DVD of it to make sure i had a playable version for a few yaers to come!
Though I do also like love acutally I only watched it for kiera knightly but enging up loving the film!
Hmm........
I'm not a Gen Xer; I'm a baby boomer , so I must be the oldest one here. Which probably also means mine are going to be more sappy than snarky. There some films I remember that aren't listed, but maybe that's because they aren't being shown on TV anymore.
Everyone and their grandmother has done a version of A Christmas Carol. My three favorites are:
!951 version of A Christmas Carol, that was renamed Scrooge for some reason. Not to be confused with the 1970 musical version, Scrooge. Then of course, the Muppets Christmas Carol.
Meet Me In St Louis isn't all about Christmas, but one of the best songs ever came from the Christmas section of the movie..."Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas".
Peace, Joy and Love
*B*
Well,
I just love Love Actually. I watched it at the movies three times, once in New Zealand making me homesick and happy at the same time, once in Amsterdam with an Australian friend and once in German with my mum and sis;) And I own the Polish version of the dvd. Gosh, do I have to say more?! Love actually is all around;) I would watch it at any time of the year really. And I just love Emma Thompson and all the others...
The other movie that makes me all happy and teary at the moment is Family Stone. Although the family portrayed in it is in many ways completely than mine, I feel the same kind of warmth and belonging that I know from my big crazy bunch;) Mhm, maybe I am watching the dvd again later tonight...
fuzzy doesn't do it for me
I'm not big on holiday movies sap or snark because eventually you have a warm fuzzy ending or somebody learns a lesson about " the joy of christmas" , but i must confess to loving love actually . minus kiera knightly.
This holiday season i plan to read alot and rewatch Buffy.
Maybe i've been invaded by the spirit of the Grinch??
my top 5
A Christmas Story is the
