Forbes celebrates the power of Angelina JolieFinally, a list of powerful celebrities that puts women in their place. And number one is one of us.
Angelina Jolie tops (heh) the Forbes “Celebrity 100” list this year, bumping Oprah Winfrey to No. 2. Look out Angelina — I think Gayle could take you.
The Celebrity 100 ranks film and television celebs based on earnings and media coverage over the past year. Although Oprah’s annual income is $275 million — as opposed to Angie’s paltry $27 mill — Jolie certainly outranked the Big O in, um, exposure.
Another woman of fluid sexuality is third: Madonna. Her Hard Candy tour to 17 countries earned $280 million. Material Girl indeed.
Beyoncé Knowles and Tiger Woods round out the top five. Although men dominate the list, as per usual, Ellen DeGeneres (No. 40) still shows her remarkable influence despite being much more outspoken about politics and sexuality this year — a very good sign.
A less positive sign — at least for a literate future — is that Stephanie Meyer (No. 26) made the list for the first time and J.K. Rowling was bumped. My thoughts about that are not appropriate for a Family friendly site, but feel free to comment as you see fit. Notably, Barack Obama (No. 49) became the first sitting head of state to make the Celebrity 100, thanks to the millions of books — $2.5 million, to be exact — he sold during the election. Forbes didn’t mention the other reason for the President’s popularity.
Check out the complete list and let us know what you think. Is Angelina the year’s most influential celebrity? What names are surprises? Who’s missing? Submitted by on June 8, 2009 - 1:00pm. |

Angelina Jolie also bought
Angelina Jolie also bought the rights to Atlas Shrugged a few years back. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it'll be produced soon-ish.
"My thoughts about that are not appropriate for a Family friendly site, but feel free to comment as you see fit."
I'll just quote Stephen King in saying that the woman can't write to save her life. Will refrain from the discussing the Mormon/chauvanistic theology injected into her 'novels'.
Hey, at least the films gave Kristen Stewart and Nikki Reed their big break.
Moleskine dreams
Really?
Her...
...or Jennifer Beals. Maybe Jessica Biel. I would be very happy.
Moleskine dreams
How did they come up with this?
I don't really understand their reasoning, and the numbers in their little columns don't really help.
There may be more men than women overall on the list, but we've got 4 of the top 5! And are at least equal in the top 10.
Stephanie Meyer. Sigh. Unfortunately, she is very popular, though that both saddens and terrifies me.
Stephanie Meyer
Speaking of... my friend directed me to this blog's rant about her, it's an entertaining read! I haven't read the books yet, I'm much more wary of doing so now...
Twilight and the Eclipse of Women: Why I Have Issues With Stephenie Meyer's Books
Some snippets:
Edward is constantly saying things like, ""There's really no point in discussing the matter further." (Eclipse 28) and "I am not going to tolerate anything dangerous!" (33) and "Clearly you were too much of a coward to deal with Charlie, so I interceded in your behalf." (56)...Doesn't that just make your skin crawl? What guy has the right to tell a girl he won't "tolerate" something, as if she's a child throwing a tantrum? It makes me want to knee the guy in the groin to give him something to think about.
And here's the part that make me feel truly ill:
Bella's mom sees her with Edward for the first time and comments:
"The way you move -- you orient yourself around him without even thinking about it. When he moves, even a little bit, you adjust your position at the same time. Like magnets... or gravity. You're like a satellite, or something. I've never seen anything like it." (68)
Now, in a normal woman, this would bring about a wake up call, something like: &^%$&^! Am I doing that?! Time to get a life back, girl!
But Bella is PLEASED. She's happy that she is no longer a person but a satellite who revolves around her man.
Meyer?!?!
J.K Rowling was knocked off the list but Meyer is on it?
That is not alright. She can't write properly, she's setting back feminist ideals back 100 years. She promotes an emotionally abusive relationship. None of the characters are developed and...well...she completely destroyed anything that was good about vampires.
i completly agree that JK
i completly agree that JK shouldn't have been booted off. she not only inspired millions of children to be creative and actual READ for once but shes a millionaire too....
anyhoo, what i wanted to say, aside from that, was that even though it might be depressing to consider, stephanie meyer probably should be on the list (hopefully not for long!), becuause of the popluarity she has achieved this past year and how much money she has made from it. i've read her books, even though they are not quite PC or revolutionary in any sense, they are a "entertaining" read at least.
i only wish that Ellen was at least higher up on the list than HER!
p.s i really don't think
p.s i really don't think she intended to "promote an emotionally abusive relationship". what's really scary, though, is that her heteronormative veiws that she expressed in her series are that of the majority of females in the US. it's nothing out of the norm.
...not that im saying that's a good thing, im just saying it doesn't bother most people.
"Another woman of fluid
"Another woman of fluid sexuality is third: Madonna."
Ahn? I think she's straight. She had just kissed some female dancers in the show, but anything else, right?
Who knows?
you cant expect ,@ least i
you cant expect ,@ least i cant, that a woman like Madonna, with everything & i mean everything , to "just kissed some female dancers in the show" i really think there is more to it, alot more! but who knows..
Ellen , you rock!!
