ER treats a lesbian couple normallyI admit that ER fell off my “must see” list when Abby left. Last night, though, I happened to watch it — and saw something remarkable. Well, remarkable in that it wasn’t remarkable. One of the storylines concerned a lesbian couple that was treated — are you sitting down? — like any other couple.
If you haven't watched it yet and it's on your TiVo, be wary of the spoilers ahead. To be honest, I missed the significance of the portrayal last night because, sigh, one of the women was dying of cancer. But when AfterEllen.com reader FASTTCR mentioned it, I watched it again. And in the sheer normality of the couple, I saw the kind of commentary that made me love ER in the first place. When the EMTs brought in Ellen (Helen Eigenberg), who had collapsed in the mall while waiting with her baby to see Santa, she murmured, “My wife.” Response? “We’ll call her.” No telling glances between the doctors, no hesitation, no double takes.
Once Nicole (played by one-time Life star Robin Weigert) arrived at the ER, she was taken immediately to Ellen’s bedside. No questioning of her right to be there; no worries about turning over the baby to her. (OK, baby Lola had on a cutesy reindeer costume, but straight women do that to their poor kids, too.)
Those things alone are food for our starvation for lesbians on network TV, but we got more, like this exchange between the couple and Dr. Banfield (Angela Bassett):
Nicole: A week before the [previous cancer] surgery, we flew to Boston and got married.
In that extraordinary ordinary exchange, we get a little dig at the fact that the couple couldn’t get married in Chicago, where they live. Are you listening, Obama? Impressed? Just wait. I won’t recount every gratifying bit of dialogue because it’s better in the context of the episode, but one more scene bears repeating. Dr. Banfield has spent the season trying to recover from the loss of her son, frequently taking her grief out on her husband and coworkers. But last night, at the ER Christmas party, she shares a slow dance with her husband.
She tells him that she has been thinking about having a family, starting again. He looks in her eyes and says, “That’s a pretty big leap of faith.” She smiles and replies, “Not so hard when you’ve got someone to hold on to.” Wait — isn’t same-sex marriage supposed to destroy the family? Behold, the power of a loving relationship, regardless of gender. See the entire episode online at the NBC website. I’m thinking ER is still must-see TV after all. Angels in America
That is the only reason I know Robin Weigert's name. She played the Mormon mother of all things in "Angels in America" (movie)...She had a very appealing presence.
And, I'm glad to know that ER finally grew up around the lesbian relationship theme. I stopped watching when they killed their last lesbian, the firefighter in a fire; now if that wasn't iffy messaging! I will do my best to watch this episode. So sad to say good-bye to Abby, one of my favorite TV characters up to her relationship with Mr. Self-Centered Intense. Not for a moment did I think he had any appeal whatsoever; he was just annoying, and I know it affected my desire to watch even Abby.
Robin Weigert played Calamity Jane
Robin Weigert also played Calamity Jane in Deadwood. She was incredible in that role. She also had a bit of a romance with a woman in the final season.
wow, there actually are
wow, there actually are miracles. thank you to the writers of ER. at least someone is getting it right.

Goodbye Grey's boring Anatomy, welcome back ER
ER is my favorite tv
ER is my favorite tv show. it has been since i was little... i mean i literally grew up watching this show. i know so much about it, it's sad.... last night's episode was good. and it made me tear up a little... for many reasons, one of which being this will be the last ER christmas!

Yeah ER
angela basset's character
angela basset's character reminds me alot of dr. weaver... only they've had to speed up the softening of dr. banfield's character as this is the last season... she has to progress a little more quickly. they took forever to make dr. weaver look like she had a soul. but even when she was supposed to be "evil" she was my favorite character. and i really loved dr. banfield from the very beginning for this very reason.

Yippee!
Wait a minute...
played by one-time Life star Robin Weigert
Life is invoked as the go-to credit for Weigert? Really?
Surely Robin's ultimate recognition at After Ellen should be for her mesmerising role as Deadwood's foul-mouthed, androgynous, lover of Madame Joanie Stubbs; Calamity Jane? Right?

I should've mentioned both.
: )
Thanks for the shout out. I look forward to watching the show again. ER has been remarkable this season. Figures.
Oh yeah, thanks for reminding me what show Robin Weigert played on (Life). So familiar but I couldn't place her. That's were I remember her from even though her work I am finding out much broader.
I suppose in another dialouge we should talk about what has happened to Sarah Sashi's character on Life. She looked great in her underwear last week but when she started rubbing her underwear/crotch on her nasty boss that was nasty. Sigh.
Anyway, yeah ER!
That's my ER!
This is exactly why I have a love/hate relationship with ER, and one of the reasons why there's a LOVE part. Sometimes they throw in the weirdest things (Abby, where art thou) and then there's this storyline that you've been waiting for, even if it's just one episode, and it reminds you why ER is such a great show.
You didn't even take your clothes of, yet you've never looked more naked.
that's awesome!
i've never was a huge ER fan, but i'm definitly gonna see this one! thanks for posting!

Bridget McManus kicks ass!!!
ER treats a lesbian couple normally on last night's episode
By profession I’m an ICU RN and I personally treat everybody as person. It is a same that society has put so many stereotypes out there on race, creeds, religion, and sexual preferences. Until proven different to me, we as human beings all bleed red. I never watched ER to much since I live it.
Always one of my favorites
From the very first episode I was hooked.
I wasn't real happy when they killed off the lesbian paramedic-firefighter, but I quickly understood the intent was to bring out the child custody issue when I saw the next episode.
I missed the last episode, so I'll have to try and catch it when I get to the Windy City area and get a better internet signal (I'm mostly mobile all the time). I would love to see us being portrayed as just like everyone else.
I'm a Medical Emergency First Response Instructor, so I teach all my students that, no matter what, that is a human being in front of them no different from themselves. If they can't wrap their heads around that, they're in the wrong profession.
A little surprised
I am a ER junkie, I have been watching it for a little over 5 years. I love ER because it is the most accurate show relating to health care topics. I was had no knowledge of the same sex couple on ER until I was watching it. I was very happy how ER didn't treat the married couple as 2nd class citizens. I am very happy with the ER writers.
thats so awesome. i hope
Oh Wait, Angela Bassett plays a doctor on ER?
www.myspace.com/lunakiss7
A little to late for my discovery. Mrs. Angela Bassett plays a doctor on ER.
Back to topic.
That's awesome. The real world should take notes and be like that. It shouldn't matter legally if someone is married or not. If someone is dying or hurt and their lover/partner/girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other, etc (too label names to list) was looking for them in the hopsital and their hurt. It should be allowed. Somethings in life shouldn't have to be legal. Some things are given human right. ER writers must be snooping around AE.com reading our rants and raves about television shows. Two thumbs up for that particular episode by ER writers. Well done!
Now back to Angela Bassett....
A little late to the party
I know I'm late here, but I have to jump in to say that ER has ALWAYS treated gay and lesbian relationships with respect. The only time there was any hint of judgement, was when Pratt's brother came out, and Pratt had difficulty with it. And when it's family, it's different. I'm sure many of you can attest to that. And Pratt's difficulty was for dramatic effect, (affect ? I can never remember which is which), not to condemn us.
Kudos to ER's writers for always showing us respect, (even when they killed off Sandy. )

One problem, thought
To be fair to ER
Robin Weigert, ER and Life...
As many have mentioned here, Robin Weigert will forever be Calamity Jane, but I have noticed her in everything she has been in and I would like an explanation, PLEASE, of why they replaced her on LIFE with that greaseball. Sorry, I don't usually cut down actors or characters they play so severely, (yeah, right, heh), but I happened to have been quite fond of the show LIFE last season. Gawd, we had Sara Shahi, a nice looking red-headed Zen guy and ROBIN WEIGERT!! When I saw that LIFE had replaced Robin's character with this, sorry again, but really repulsive character and THEN had Shahi all over him..well, I've seen one episode of LIFE this season and it was the one where Shahi jumped in bed with Mr. Slimeball. They could have kept the same storyine and kept Robin in. Nyeah!
It was great seeing Robin Weigert on ER and great seeing her play a very loving, kind and responsible Lesbian. She needs full time work! Playing a Lesbian would be fine. ;)
