Emma Thompson takes a chance on love in “Last Chance Harvey”

I go to see romantic comedies somewhat grudgingly because I like to pretend to be stoic about being perpetually single, and I know that by the end of the movie I’m going to be crying like a lovesick puppy. But in the case of Last Chance Harvey, I might as well just grab a box of tissues and go. I simply cannot resist Emma Thompson.

In Last Chance Harvey, Harvey (Dustin Hoffman) is a musician and jingle writer who goes to London to attend his daughter’s wedding. Once he gets there, he learns that she wants her stepfather to give her away. Then he learns he’s lost his job. Harvey needs a friend.

After missing his flight home, Harvey meets Kate (Thompson), and the two get to know each other as they stroll along the Thames.

Eventually, Kate convinces Harvey that they should go together to his daughter’s wedding reception, which is still going on despite the fact that enough time has passed for Harvey to go to the airport, try to catch his plane, have a drink and a chat with Kate, and walk around London. Oh, and then they shop for a dress for Kate to wear to the reception.

But this is a movie, after all, so the couple gets to the party in time for Harvey to make an emotional speech that melts his daughter’s heart and reminds her that she loves her dad.

We don’t see many films in which two people of a certain age fall in love — and that’s a shame, really. People who have loved and lost a few times tend to know who they are and what they want, so they approach relationships differently than when they were younger. What we see in Last Chance Harvey is a connection between two ordinary people who don’t expect more from each other than a pleasant afternoon. Discovering that more is possible surprises them both.

What’s not surprising is that Hoffman and Thompson give great performances — both were nominated for Golden Globes and are in contention for Oscar noms. Here’s the trailer.

Last Chance Harvey is in limited release now and will open nationwide Friday. Is the film on your list of must-see movies?

    Hell yeah.

I just hope it'll open here in Germany as well. I'll watch anything with Emma in it. Seriously. I loved her in "Much Ado About Nothing", but I like most of her more recent movies too.

I'm not a signature, I'm just cleaning here.

I've got to see this. I love them both. They're great actors and Emma Thompson is just wonderful.

Two people of a certain age...

... the "certain age" for the lovely Emma being 49 and Dustin Hoffman being 71. Yeah, that sounds appealing. Even when trying to cater to the more mature audience, Hollywood still manages to push that whole younger woman falls for old goat line. Of course, in about ten years, the roles could be played by Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas...

    'Tis true, but...

If I had the chance to play the younger woman to Emma Thompson's "old goat," I'd be there in a heartbeat. (uh, not that she is an old goat, I'm just making a comparison... don't hurt me!)

I'll definitely be seeing this film, the ageism/sexism of Hollywood notwithstanding, as I'm just another fan who would be enchanted by Emma Thompson reading the Yellow Pages.

    Actually, on second thoughts...

... you make a very valid point, thus proving what a complete hypocrite I am: yuck to older blokes and younger females, but if the roles were reversed (and, y'know, lesbianised...), I too would jump at the chance to be Emma's younger woman (though sadly in my case, not that much younger). As you were, carry on!

    Emma = awesome

I don't know what it is with British actresses, but I generally fall for them at some stage. Emma Thompson caught my eye in "Much ado about nothing". And I have loved her performances ever since. I am definitely going to see this new movie.

    It's a new dawn. It's a new day. It's a new life. And I'm feeling good.

    Last Chance Harvey is really

Last Chance Harvey is really one of the few movies I am looking forward to seeing this year. Ever since i saw Emma Thompson in Love Actually, I have been hooked and have since watched every single movie she has acted in. I also a huge admirer of Dustin Hoffman and have also watched a lot of the movies he has acted in. Honestly i could not think of a better pair of actors to appear in a movie together. The on-screen chemistry between them is nothing short of amazing and the characters' chance meeting and blosoming friendship/relationship resembles the type of relationship i would love to have with someone. Harvey and Kate make for a beautiful movie. Last Chance Harvey is definitely a must see for even the most cynical person when it comes to the strange and mysterious ways of love, live, friendships and relationships.

    Emma is yummy

I love the way Emma is evolving into a matronly Englishwoman. And by that I mean that as she ages (incredibly gracefully), she seems to be getting more and more English, and more and more womanly, and I *love love love* all of it. If possible, she's hotter than ever (and like many people here, I've been in love with her for a long time).

And Last Chance Harvey is the best film I've seen in years. It's practically perfect in every way. I thought it was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to be *that* good. It's a gem.

As for the age difference, it is mentioned in the movie -- it's fully acknowledged that he's considerably older, so that's somewhat refreshing.

But yes, you will cry your eyes out! In a totally good way.

are any of you old enough to remember...

Emma playing a lesbian role in Ellen's first sitcom?

She was hot in that role.  But I loved her before then.  It's those eyes.  And that British way of tawking and awl.

    sigh.

    This is may be

a film I am willing to pay to see. I have been protesting against going to the movies because the prices are outrageous. ...but, that's a whole other topic.  I do love Emma and would like to actually see this on the big screen. Not big on romantic films but I have big fans of both Emma and Dustin for a very long time. The previews look really good.
