"Damages" renewed: two more seasons of Glenn Close-ups

This is going to be a little spoilerish, so let me get to the point first. Damages has been renewed for two more seasons. That's right — two.

Now, to give those of you waiting for the season on DVD or not yet caught up with your DVR a chance to skedaddle, here's another look at one of the best promotional photos ever.

**Did I mention spoilers ahead?**

I have to say that even with Damages' ups and downs over its first season, I think it's one of the best shows to come along in years. And not just because Glenn Close in a power suit is as close to perfection as a mere human will ever be.

As many an AfterEllen.com blogger has observed, from start to finish, the first season of Damages was sophisticated and smart — as much a character study as a murder mystery. I was fascinated to watch the relationship between Patty Hewes (Close) and Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) develop from mentor-protégée to co-conspirators to predator-prey.

As the season finale ended, we learned that the dynamics are about to change. Now Ellen will become predator, returning to work for Patty for the sole reason of bringing her down. I'm looking forward to seeing Ellen's character operate as more than Patty's pawn — and finding out if Byrne's acting range goes beyond the sort of numb horror she was stuck in this season.

We have plenty of new questions to explore next season. Why did Patty try to have Ellen killed? Would Patty, who has a reputation for doing whatever it takes to win, really be that threatened by Ellen's guilt over what they did to Ray Fiske?

Did Arthur Frobisher (a marvelously sleazy Ted Danson) die? Will Larry be back to pay for what he did? What was Patty's son doing at the apartment the night Ellen was almost killed? Did he see Uncle Pete? Is Tom (Tate Donovan) really Ellen's friend or will he always come down on Patty's side?

What will Ellen do when she finds out a cop killed David? And when will we learn that Ellen was never in love with David, but was, in fact, after his sister Katie?

Oops, sorry. I got carried away.

In any case, I'm very happy Damages will be back. How about you? What questions are driving you crazy? What would you like to see happen next season?

So glad it will be back

This was one of the best shows!!  Loved every minute of it!!!

So next season here is an opportunity for a season long story line.  It starts with Ellen who is driven with revenge trying to take Patty down.  But little by little the revenge makes her more and more tainted and slowly she becomes more like Patty.  Willing to go too far and willing to cross the line.  In the end the cliff hanger is that she has Patty right where she wants her and the choice is she can either bring Patty down but to do it she has to cross the line in some ultimate manner.  It ends with us not knowing if Ellen chooses the way of Patty (evil) or good.

That leaves the third season to either develop a story about Ellen either teaming up with Patty as the evil duo because she couldn't bring herself to actually go through with the final ending of Patty as she realized she was just like her......OR......Ellen starts her own law firm becoming just as powerful using some of the very tactics as Patty but she just won't cross the "evil" line.  The goal of this new law firm is to directly challenge every single case Patty takes.  Constant good vs evil struggle.

How is that for a late day ramble?

ah, there is a god after all...

and her name is Glenn Close? I really enjoyed this series with its unexpected turn of events at the end of each of episode. To know that two more seasons are in the works is simply bliss. Hope the writers (yes, I am thankful for the writers! Go Writer's Guild, you have my support) can maintain Damages' exceptional level.

    Great News!

What a relief! Sure, the series lagged a little in the middle, but it finished like gang busters on crack. More Glenn Close is a good thing! And I hope Frobisher is alive so that we can find out why Patty hates him so G-D much.

    Oh Yes!

I had hopes that Damages would continue.  I loved the treatment of ethics that this show juggled in Season One.  There were a few parts that bothered me: Patty crying at her child's grave for one.  Are we to think that some early trauma in her life created her cut throat attorney practice?  And will Rose's trauma over David take her down a similar path?  I hope Frobisher lived.  He is so evil...especially when he's snorting blow and banging women in the back seat of his limo...I'll never forget his eyes in that episode...the devil in the flesh!

    Great Series

I loved this show, too, and I'm glad it's coming back. I'm really sorry Ray Fiske died. I thought he was one of the best on the show. My own theory on why Patty hates Arthur so much is that eiother he 1) fathered that dead kid in the cemetery (meaning he and Patty have some secret history), or 2) he was somehow responsible for the death.

I can't wait for the nest season, and hope the strike doesn't hurt it.

Writers on strike? No Prob..here's the swag:

Okay, here goes. Mysteriously not heartbroken over David's murder, Ellen discovers feelings for a yet to be announced character: Jodie. Jodie is a smart, witty lawyer who is new to the firm and is a winner with every case she touches. Jodie asks Ellen out to dinner to discuss a case they are working on together, and sparks fly. After dinner, they retire to Jodie's fashionable, yet contemporary apartment that oversees the serene waterway. Ellen finds comfort in Jodie's arms; however, in the morning, Jodie wakes to find a note from Ellen asserting distress and uncertainty about their romantic connection. Can they stay away from each other? Will Patty find out? How will this affect the case they are working together? Rumors fly around the office. Their attraction to each other is undeniable.

Okay, you'll never see this story line in Republican America, but what a great one it would be!

I like the way you think

Go picket with the writers and slip them the script. Hey, you never know.
