Cybill Shepherd couldn't be more "proud and happy" for Clementine

Cybill Shepherd rocks.

Sure, we have straight allies everywhere these days, now that being a Friend O’ The Gays is trendy. But Shepherd has been front and center, speaking out for gay and lesbian rights for over a decade. So, I was thrilled to see, thanks to a tip from AfterEllen.com reader Christine, that she received the National Ally for Equality award at the HRC Atlanta Dinner last week.

Cybill was entertaining, as always, with funny stories about her time on The L Word and thoughtful reflections on her experiences as a human rights activist and recent progress toward LGBT equality. And, of course, she mentioned daughter Clementine Ford’s coming out, saying, “I couldn’t be more proud and more happy.”

Here’s the speech, in its entirety.

More good news for Cybill Shepherd fans: Lifetime recently started airing the hilarious sitcom, Cybill, every day at 8 a.m. and 2 a.m. ET. Trust me — it’s well worth the room on your DVR.

Parade reported this week that the full series finally will see release on DVD in the near future, too.

I can’t wait.

    Completely love her!

I had like the hugest crush on her and her 'daughter' Zoey at the same time when I watched Cybill at like 13. But probably way more on her than on Zoey. And I loved Christine/Maryann, she was so hilarious! I'm still shocked/kinda mad at how they ended the show.

I think it's awesome when people speak out for the gay community and knowing that she has been an ally for a long time, probably even before her daughter came out to her, is just really great! Can you imagine coming out to your parents when they are fighting for gay rights? I'm not saying that it's the easiest thing in the world, but it certainly makes it easier.

I love the picture of her and Clementine, it just really shows how much they look alike. Both beautiful women!

Did she say that Season 5 was her first season? Cause her first episode was 4x02 lol

Way to go, Cybill.  She is an inspiration.

What I wouldn't give to hear my mother utter words like.. “I couldn’t be more proud and more happy.”

    even though

her speech was very widely on topic sometimes, but wow, she could read the telephone book to me and still make it entertaining with her lovely charme! it's good to have a charismatic person like her being in the limelight pro gay rights.

    what a speech

for how long that speech was, i really enjoyed every minute of it. It's so nice to hear about the stories she's gone through, and how they reflected her throughout her life. I think she was a great candidate for this award and i'm so proud of her and her daugher! Keep it up Cybill!

    Not true

Not to diminish the importance of the other parts of this post, but what about Cybill being in stores this week?  That is completely false.

A lame "Collectors Edition" set of only 10 episodes was released last year.  That's all we currently have for region 1.  The complete series has been available in the UK for some time now.  I've been waiting for Cybill to be released on DVD in the US for so long now, I thought it was strange I hadn't heard anything.  I did some research, and I was right.  Turns out there's no release in the near future.

I'm pretty sure that interview is old.  A Sarah Palin question? Come on.  The website you have linked featured the story recently, for some reason.  However, when I searched Parade's website, it was dated  09/16/08.  I think she's referring to the Collectors Edition that was released in '08.  Sorry fellow Cybill fans, we still have a while to wait.  At least it's showing on Lifetime.

    Well, maybe

I tried to find some confirmation of the Parade story and couldn't, which is why I put that sentence the way I did. I deliberately didn't say that the DVD was released this week because I didn't find that to be the case. The mystery is that the story was dated yesterday . The way Cybill talked, it was as if some of the "buried" footage now is available, and since that footage is not in existing DVD collections, I'm hoping this is something new. If the Parade story is improperly dated, we will correct it when I find out for sure. But "completely false" is a tad strong.

Cybill, and the March of '93

Thanks for the link to this speech, linster.  What a charming woman.  It brought back so many memories to hear her talk of the 1993 March on Washington.  I was there, and it was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.  For that glorious weekend in DC, it really seemed that the world was the other way around.. that gay was the norm and straight the minority.  I remember one ride on the subway in particular.  My friends and I boarded and away we went on a subway car jam packed full of people.  A few moments later, and all at once it seemed, everyone on board looked around and noticed that almost every single person in that car was queer, and quite spontaneously the whole lot of us, perfect strangers, erupted in cheers.  We were hootin' and hollerin' and filled with joy, all of us.  Powerful stuff.  My words don't do it justice. (The one or two locals who were on board looked somewhat amused, but also a little uncomfortable.. hee!)

Anyway *ahem* enough of my memories, this is about Cybill.  What a wonderful ally.  Glad to have her on our side.  (Oh, and the poster above was right, her accent is thicker here than I've ever heard it.)

    Awesome

I love those times when we are all together and it seems like being gay is the norm. Which, of course, it is. Thanks for sharing that memory!

I never really realized how much she had done! She is a truly amazing woman and I'm so happy now to see her honoured. I also love the close relationship she and Clementine seem to have; everything about her is inspiring.

    this was actually the best

this was actually the best speech I've heard in a long time. I rarely listen to a whole speech, but now I was focussed the whole 13 minutes it lasted..
