Wonderful women warriors: buff, beautiful and babeliciousJaime Sommers. Supergirl. Sarah Walker. Niki Sanders. Sarah Corvus. All women who kick butt on a regular basis on network TV. None have captured my heart in the way that Buffy, Xena and Syd did, but the possibility is there.
We love that these characters are more than beautifully buff bodies. They're real people, with brains and personalities and problems — even dark sides. Other writers have analyzed why strong women are so popular with general audiences, but at AfterEllen.com, we prefer to focus on the women themselves. And their beautifully buff bodies.
Fortunately, we can count on EW.com to have the right list at the right time. Last week's Butt-Kicking Babes is just what the lesbians ordered. The inspired lineup includes the top 24 hard-hittin' hotties of all time. Actually, it started with 22 — with Buffy and Sydney missing. Fan outcry forced revision of the list, and rightly so. Now most of our favorites are there — Ripley, The Bride, Starbuck, Trinity, Kate Austen — along with some great choices that are less obvious. Here are some highlights and choice quotes from EW's notes. No. 23 — Domino Harvey (Keira Knightley) in Domino "Black leather jacket, dog tags, necklace with a domino as a pendant, bandolier, artfully ripped jeans."
No. 19 — Vienna (Joan Crawford) in Johnny Guitar "Shootin', brawlin', eyebrow-archin'. All-black Western-wear, including britches." (Johnny Guitar is a movie to rent. Mercedes McCambridge versus Joan Crawford. I'm surprised the heat didn't melt the film.)
No. 18 — Eowyn (Miranda Otto) in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King "Full chainmail armor, spear, short sword and Hobbit in the back seat."
No. 15 — Varla (Tura Satana) in Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! "One of the baddest bad girls ever, Varla can out-drag-race any man and she can kill with a single karate chop to the back."
No. 12 — River Tam (Summer Glau) in Serenity "[Battle gear] seems to be nothing more than a sundress. But it's the sundress of death."
No. 11 — Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) in Alias "Lingerie, short skirts, neon wigs: basically the deadliest hooker costumes you can imagine." (I know I already mentioned Syd, but I had to use this picture.)
No. 9 — Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman) in Goldfinger "With apologies to Halle Berry's Jinx, Pussy Galore is the baddest Bond babe ever."
No. 6 — Coffy (Pam Grier) in Coffy "Coffy's creative weaponry includes a sawed-off shotgun, a syringe with a lethal dose of heroin, a broken wine bottle and an Afro packed with hidden razor blades."
No. 1 — Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer "Wicked with a stake, Buffy's a gifted martial artist, stronger than the average bear and a world-class shopper."
Before you scour the rest of the list, I must note the most stunning omission. They aren't kicking butt here, but this is definitely an action shot.

I totally agree.
I'm sorry, this list was a bit apalling, and the "Male Admirer" section made me throw up a little. In my mouth.
First of all, I didn't agree with the order. Buffy as #1? No thanks. I'm sure I will get flack for saying that, but I firmly believe that Xena could kick Buffy's ass. Hell, Season 6 Gabrielle could kick Buffy's ass. And Sydney Bristo's. Shamefull.
Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) should have been much higher, as should Eowyn from LOTR. And LEELOO!!! WHERE OH WHERE WAS LEELOO?!
I think they should have had one list for top 25 kick-butt babes in film, and another for for TV. I don't think you can classify the same kick-butt-ness for two different mediums - there's no consistency. Kate Austen from Lost has NOTHING in common with an Eowyn, or a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Michelle Yeoh (who is way hot).
And what about the X-Women? Jean Gray? Storm? I won't say Rogue ... Anna Paquin does as much justice to Rogue as Keanu Reeves does to Shakespeare.
Joan Crawford? Excuse me? *hangs head*
Needless to say, I'm peeved.
I am a total Buffyholic, but
I am a total Buffyholic, but No. 1? Although SMG got better at realistic-looking fight scenes as the series went on, I think a lot of the others on the list are far more badass. Plus, where's Faith?
I love how Michelle Ryan has been on TV for five minutes and she's No. 14.
I also think it's super-lame that two men compiled the list.

Just looked at the 25 Best Action HEROES list ... there are three women on there. Interesting?
Uma Thurman from Kill Bill Vol 1 is one of the three ... the others are the chick from Le Femme Nikita, and Sigourney Weaver from Aliens.
So now I'm confused. An Action Hero must be different than a "Butt Kickin Babe" ... When looking at the list, I assumed that the masculine form of HERO would assume the corresponding male forms, and did. Except for those three women. On the "Heroes" list, there was no need for explanation, except for why they were so kick ass. There was no "Admiring Women" section ...
Oh. And I thought of one other, rather shocking omission: Kate Beckinsdale as Selene in Underworld.

My gal Xena doesn't get any respect. Who the HELL made up a list of the best ass kicking women of all time that didn't include Xena Warrior Princess on the list, and at minimum at the very top??!!!! FRAK. I'd kick off Honor Blackman, Hillary Swank, and a few others and put Xena at number one. Xena killed many gods, an army 40,000 thousand Chinese warriors all by herself and could EASILY defeat all 25 of those other woman action characters listed on that bogus list.

While I know you cant make everyone happy with lists and top X of <genre>.. this list was kind of all over the place with their choices. Xena probably didn't make it because there were no 'male admirer'.... And the title of the article? Babes?? How about women.. or ladies?

i am boycotting this list (even though buffy is on it which i agree with)...because it is sexist, has many stupid choices...and what butt-kicking women list does NOT include xena and gabrielle?? you've gotta be kidding me EW!

This many ladies can't be wrong. Xena and Gabrielle have earned the top spot on that list! But that male admirer thing kinda pissed me off. Not that they didn't have admirers. Ares anyone? It sounded like the "babe's" status grew with how powerful their admirer was.
And yeah. Where's Geena Davis on that list? She totally kicked ass in The Long Kiss Goodnight! And she's a babe. A smart babe.
