"Buffy the Sketch Book": behind the scenes of well-drawn characters

I bought a couple of issues of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic while the show was still on. They were OK, but, with the notable exception of a two-issue story about Willow and Tara (by Amber Benson and Terry Moore), I didn't find the series interesting enough to add to my subscription list. Then came "Season Eight," with Joss Whedon himself at the helm, and by issue No. 2, I was hooked.

What surprised me most about the comic was not that the dialogue and pacing were in keeping with the show — after all, Whedon wrote it — but that the characters had the same look and feel of their live action versions. Pleasing fans of a cult classic isn't an easy task, but that is exactly what artist Georges Jeanty has done.

As you might expect from obsessive Buffy fans, no detail is too small to be noticed. When Jeanty released pencils for the cover of No. 2, for example, it sparked a debate on Whedonesque about the appropriateness of Buffy's sneakers. Maybe it's just me, but when I see that picture, I don't think of footwear.

Capturing the likenesses of the Scoobies — characters we saw in action for seven seasons — is no small task. Jeanty spoke to Comic Guide about the challenge.

"I think it's the likenesses that have taken me that much longer to finish an issue. I really sweat over them, but Joss Whedon told me something that really set me on the right path. He said he didn't want the characters to look like photographs and have that stiffness. He said I don't want you to draw Sarah Michelle Gellar, I want you to draw Buffy. Which just clicked with me. I still struggle, but not as much."

What Jeanty does is all the more impressive when you realize that what he gets from Whedon is a script with descriptions of the scene. (If you aren't familiar with how a comic goes from script to finished page, check out Making of a Comic: Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Dark Horse's website to see each step.) So, I'm looking forward to Buffy the Sketch Book, which collects Jeanty's thumbnails and preliminary sketches from the first story arc of Season Eight. Georges was kind enough to send us a few samples.

The cover for issue No. 5 started with this.

The finished pencils looked like this.

And here's the printed version.

Here are pencils for one of my favorite spreads from issue No. 1.

And the finished pages:

To see some of Georges' other work, visit his website and tell him AfterEllen.com sent you. Jeanty's next collection will feature Faith — maybe Willow will get her own one of these days. Hey, Willow, can I see your sketches?

Are you reading the Buffy comic? What do you think of the Season Eight art? Here's a chance to tell Georges.

    Buffy

Every time a new issue hits the stands, it's in my mailbox a day later ;)

The graphics and attention to detail makes this comic better than any other series made recently.  The world of Buffy is unique and the comic is just as good as the show or maybe a bit better.  I hate having to wait months between each issue.

I'm liking the fact that Joss has no bounds and doesn't have to answer the Fox.  Way to go for sticking it to the man!

    Buffy

I agree that Jeanty has done a marvelous job with Buffy and the Scoobies...but, and you knew there would have to be a but, his Faith work is really, well, sketchy. All too often he makes her face look like a kewpie doll, or just vague. The thing is, given the nonvariant cover art by Jo Chen, which is always spot on, you expect the interior penciling to be equally good. Nevertheless, I love the season 8 comic, and largely think that it's better than season 6 anyway ;)

    Yeah Faith is looking

Yeah Faith is looking terrible in the interior art. It's like a big shock after how smoking hot the #7 cover is. The nonvarient covers are gorgeous.

All I know is that they

All I know is that they brought back Warren and thats just bulls***! I will not be reading this book.

    Yeah, but...

I agree that bringing Warren back seems to be a misstep, since he had to be dead in order for First to take his form. But on the other hand, if Joss brought back Warren, maybe he'll bring other dead characters back (cough-tara-cough).

    Buffy

Warren could be resurrected because he didn't die a natural death, i.e. he was killed using supernatural powers. Meanwhile, Tara was killed by a human using human means, meaning she can't be brought back. This is all within the Buffy mythology, so I guess this all makes me a nerd :P~

    You're right

I have been out-geeked. I bow to your Buffy knowledge.
    TaraMM's picture

    actually not right

saying that they cant bring tara back b/c it doesnt fit the mythology is a copout. if they can turn slayerville on its head and give every girl slayer strength, tara can come back. also warren may have been a bio human but he was using magicks and bad mojo which definately helped push him over the edge killing tara. at least tara came back in the new non canon book Dark Congress. Lots of smoochies

    warren v tara

I hope they can bring Tara into the plot. Didn't Willow mention being able to cross dimensions to talk to Tara at some point?

And the First was able to take the form of Buffy, even though she'd been brought back from the dead, so it makes sense he (it?) could take the form of Warren even though Warren was brought back.

I have to say, I love to know I'm not the only one still obsessed with Buffy. I spent the summer watching the entire series again from start to finish and it was even better - seeing the continuity across seasons so close together.

    Fray

For those of you who love the Buffy comics, I just wanted to throw "Fray" out there--another comic about another (exceedingly hot) slayer, also by Joss. I have two of comics, and the artwork is BEAUTIFUL.

Fray is a great book and I

Fray is a great book and I really want Joss to do more with it if he can find time with the 10 million other projects he is involved right now.

All Buffy fans should pick up Fray.

    Once More with Cinnamon

And I almost forgot to mention in the cover art you have headlining: Who is wrapped around Buffy's waist? Satsu, that's who, the one with the cinnamon flavored lip balm who also roused Buffy from her sleeping beauty catatonic state induced by former rat Amy. The very same spell which demanded that Buffy had to be kissed by someone who was in love with her. Oh, how I've missed this nuance.

    buffy for breakfast

i've been away travelling for a while now so have missed out on all the recent issues.  i got the first issue and variant copy mailed out to me and was really impressed with it all.  i really agree with the comments about faith not being up to scratch though.  i've seen plenty of the images online and somehow they're just not quite right.  kinda hard to pin down that extreme hotness though ;)  as for buffy wearing trainers (sorry, 'sneakers')......well she never really did in the show but it definitely works for the comics.  i like dress-down buff better.  completely un-dressed and in the buff, buff also works.....sorry, what?

    Yeah but revisited...

At the end of issue #6 where people send in questions, there is Joss's response on why Warren is alive. He says, "He was legally dead for like a second. Amy didn't tell him 'cause she didn't want to upset him. I forgot, okay?!" It has nothing to do with magic or with anything. He messed up. That is it. From what I have seem in the responses to the questions, Tara will make an appearance, but she can not be brought back. A natural death is a natural death is a natural death. Turning the world into Slayerville, that was not natural, that was getting rid of the slayer line completely. Something that required power beyond Willow's. Yeah, I'm a big Buffy geek.. :o)
    Genevieve Grenier's picture

    How's this for geekiness?

In the episode Anne, season 3, Buffy is actually wearing sneakers. When she's lifting up the wooden gate blocking her escape route and commenting on how it's working her abs and glutes, you see her wearing white sneakers. Losing lesbian street cred every second of the day @ www.attictales.com

    comic book girl

I had never been in a comic book store in my life until Season 8 came out. Now I show up faithfully every month to get my Buffy fix.

I agree with those who didn't care for Warren's return. He's with Amy now? Huh? It seemed like for a while they were trying to re-introduce too many old characters at once and then just dropped their threads again. I'm already a little lost. But I trust that Joss will pull some coherency out of what he set up. The drawings and dialogue are awesome. I really look forward to reading it every month.

    I *adore* the Buffy comics,

I *adore* the Buffy comics, and being a Buffy Obsessive, I was not disappointed. The artwork is amazing.

    I'm kind of enjoying the

I'm kind of enjoying the comics (I have issues with the Faith arc but I love Brian K. Vaughan so I'm willing to wait and see how it's resolved) but I loathe Jeanty's artwork. He's usually OK at drawing Xander and Buffy (although Buffy in the first panel of #7? Terrible!) and his Giles can be alright but if I were Eliza Dushku I would be really pissed. His Faith sucks beyond belief.
