Scandal-free Britney on "How I Met Your Mother"

AfterEllen.com tends to shy away from writing about women who get more publicity from their real-life escapades than their talent. But I have to admit, I have kind of a soft spot for Britney Spears. Probably because I still remember her like this.

As Dorothy Snarker reported last week, Spears is guest starring on How I Met Your Mother Monday evening. Cast regulars Alyson Hannigan (Lily) and Jason Segal (Marshall) praised her comic timing, and Cobie Smulders (Robin) called Spears a "true professional." Wait — I almost missed a chance to post a new picture of Alyson.

Britney plays Abby, the nerdy receptionist for Ted's dermatologist (played by Sarah Chalke). CBS released some clips over the weekend, and Britney actually does a pretty good job with the role.

Abby is smitten with Ted and gradually transforms herself from mousy to sexy to get Ted's attention.

At Ted's next appointment, Abby is reading the book that Ted was reading in the previous scene.

The CBS promotional clip gives us a preview of Abby's interactions with Barney (Neil Patrick Harris). To me, Spears seems to be poking fun at herself — a good sign, IMO.

OK, we're not talking Emmy Award here, but you have to admit that Britney is likeable in this role, and she looks, well, kinda hot. I know putting her in a role like Abby is a publicity move to help clean up her image. But the truth is, it works. I like this Britney — and hope she sticks around.

She guest starred on Will & Grace as well! Played a mouthpiece of the Bush admin hijacking Jack's talk-show who's actually a closeted lesbian with a thick Southern drawl. Much as I hate to admit it, she was hilarious. :P

    Britney

I will be the first to say that I have NEVER liked Ms. Spears, even back when she was "cute" and "adorable." (Subjective words, IMO.)

But, I am kind of ingtrigued to watch this. It appears as though the publicity stunt is working on me!

And, that line about changing her Facebook status had me cracking up... so true!!

    Not a Britney fan but...

I have never really liked Britney and especially not lately, but I have to admitt that this looks funny!

If you can judge based on this she really does a good job and I'm kinda happy for her because even though I don't like her I hate it when people get humiliated and she does not need another MTV VMA disaster. Good for her!

Have to agree with carolinagrrrl, I cracked up at the line about changing the Facebook status.

    Agreed on Britney...

She does have pretty good comic timing...

As for this being a comeback...I think depends more Britney's family and Britney...If she can stay away from the paparazzi and the caffine; and spend more time with the people who truly care for and respect her...Then, thelinster and the rest of us; will have back the Britney we all love...

Oh, thanks for the Ally photo. ;)
