"Big Love"’s big season finaleSeason 3 of Big Love ended this week and I have only one thing to say: wow.
I have loved Big Love from the beginning, but this season was amazing. I know that some consider this show to be misogynistic, but I find it anything but. To me, the internal struggles of the female characters illustrate just how complex and powerful women are by nature, despite their circumstances.
Spoilers ahead. This year, the Henricksons dealt with crisis after crisis, from the possibility of a fourth wife joining the family to Nicki’s revelation that she has a 14-year-old daughter.
In the finale alone, we see Bill and Barb’s daughter Sarah, who got pregnant and miscarried this year, propose to her boyfriend with the eventual blessing of her dad. Margene asserts her independence and launches what she hopes will be a lucrative career as a TV shopping host.
Alby tries to kill his mother — and Bill’s brother may have succeeded in killing Roman. But not before Roman tells Bill to claim his power from God, which Bill does by proclaiming himself the leader of his own church.
I’m not sure where that leaves Barb.
As the wife who struggles the most with the polygamist life, she experienced a crisis of faith this season. In an episode that caused outrage from the LDS church by depicting a sacred ceremony in a Mormon temple — a ceremony that only approved church members can witness — Barb attempted to reconcile with her mom and sister by participating in an endowment ritual, only to be excommunicated shortly thereafter. Now she is faced with moving even farther away from her Mormon faith. If Bill’s proclamation leads where I think — to his claiming leadership of Juniper Creek — it might be the last straw for Barb.
In any case, the performances this year were stellar. Jeanne Tripplehorn (Barb) and Chloë Sevigny (Nicki) both deserve Emmy nods. Ginnifer Goodwin beautifully captured Margene’s need to find an identity apart from the family — and I have a feeling next season will let her shine. With supporting characters like Amanda Seyfried (Sarah), Grace Zabriskie (Bill’s mom, Lois), Mary Kay Place (Nicki’s mom, Adaleen), Ellen Burstyn (Barb’s mom, Nancy) and Harry Dean Stanton (Roman), great acting is everywhere. What did you think of Season 3 of Big Love? Are you as fascinated with the Henricksons as I am? Any predictions for Season 4? Submitted by on March 27, 2009 - 12:30pm. |

This show is the only thing
This show is the only thing that has gotten me through The L Word coming to an end.
I've been a fan of Big Love since the first season, but this season was top notch. I couldn't help but compare its' well crafted plot twists to what was happening on the last season of The L Word (it's on the same night, after all). Each episode built upon the next, revelaing just enough to keep the audience satisfied, and leaving enough questions unanswered to drive the plot forward in an interesting way.
We have lots to wonder about for next season, but weren't left hanging either...
This show!
I don't think I would have been able to stick with the show its first season, where it was all about scheduling time for sex with Bill. But since I watched it this year in a marathon, I was able to power through it. And the pay-off has been enormous. This really is an amazing cast, espeically Chloe Savigney. Nicki might be one of the most complex characters I've seen in a long time and Chloe sells every bit of it.
And, personally, I vote for an Adaleen and Lois show because those two are priceless with their compound antics.
I hope they don't make us wait too long for the next season. Wasn't it 2 yrs between the 2nd and 3rd season?
i love big love
i love this show so much. all the characters are so well written and acted. i love barb's reaction to all that goes on around her and how she tries to hold it all together and still hold to her faith and i cried with her when she was removed from the church. as an ex-mormon i knew what she was going thru but i carry faith that i will see my family again in the sweet by and by.
nikki is a character that you really love but hate at the same time. i can see her struggle to side with her father but at the same time still be loyal to bill and the family and each episode brings a new layer to her and we keep seeing how truly damaged she is. you just want to hug her but slap her the next instant.
margene has really grown alot from the first episode. at first she really was just another kid in the house but she has grown so much and has really started having faith in herself and i hope that continues with her new line of work.
this last season had so much great drama and i could not believe how fast the hour would go by each time the show was on. i just hope that we don't have to wait another year or two to get the next season.

Wow...
Oh! I'm so happy!
Now they are all so complex, but not just in the plots of each episode, but in their characters! I am so, so, so, SO SOOOO VERY HAPPY! The awesomeness of this season will help buoy me up until the next one, I think. Hooray! HOORAY!!!
Big Love <3
I'm a huge Big Love fan! I agree that this season was by far the best season of the show (if not the best season of any tv show I've watched). It sucks that we are probably going to have to wait another year or year and a half for season 4 and it will probably only be 10-12 episodes.
I think Chloe Sevigny should get an emmy for her acting...I've never loved to hate/hated to love a character so much!
I can't wait to see what happens next season! :)

Great season!
Loved it, but did anyone else feel bad for Heather when she gave up her college of choice to room w/ Sarah and then Sarah changed her mind?
I feel like Teeny was non-existant this season and I always thought she was a cute kid. And I liked the interaction between Ben and Sarah. but I think that I wasn't thrilled w/ Sarah's storyline, at least her proposing to Scott. I think in some ways they made her character so anti-polygamy.
I love Lois and Adalene. And Barb's mom too. THe scene with Lois and Nancy together. (You cant have four, what are you going for, a quorum? Whats a quorum? Seven)
And I personally think Ana was a bad idea from the beginning
love
great season, BUT
I was really hoping Heather would come out of the closet by now! It's driving me crazy! D:
All those women living
All those women living together and negotiating every aspect of their lives daily, what is not to love? I am sure Don's wives left him this season to only love one another as a couple, JoJo and her sister Wife. Heather is also fascinating, because she is on her own private compound and she does not even know it. At some point her coming it is going to be an epic event. Religion has put a lock on many closet doors, it will be through the wise and enlightened Sarah that she survives it or it will end in tragedy, signifying the many different types of compounds that exist in our society.
I think season 4 does put Bill in line for running the compound. The struggle will be the freedom that the women have come to expect off the compound vs. Bill's need for power, revenge, and redemption. What really is best for the family and who will really decide? The depiction of so many powerful women negotiation through a very patriarchal society is very intriguing but it romanticizes a predominantly negative situation for the women that are born into it.
Big Love Finale
I thought it was awesome...actually the last few episodes have had me on the edge of my seat...especially Kathy's death & Barb's excommmunication...balled my friggin eyes out!!! And i really liked how he made himself the head of his own church, it seemed to make sense to me. He truly has faith and has been humble enough in his path that you really believe he has no other agenda then to get his family into heaven. It will be interesting to see where that leads, especially with Barb.
On the Bill and Juniper creek thing, I thought the exact same thing as soon as Roman was murdered (which was awesome BTW!! Awwwwesome...was not expecting it, sat there with my mouth open the whole scene...lol). So far all of Bill's trials have been about god and the security of his family (particularly financially)...it will be interesting to see how the potential for such power changes him. All in all an excellent season, can't wait for the next. (side note: i did miss Heather though, in the last few eps).
"I know you're lonely. I think you need someone to want you. Well, I do want you. So be brave, and want me back."
I'm obsessed...
with this show and don't know what i'm going to do with myself now that the season has ended...
i can't wait for the fourth season.
and i agree with another poster about heather coming out of the closet already! she's clearly in love with Sarah.
Next season
When is the next season coming out? Have they started filming the 4th season? Is Nicki's daughter ging to be part of the show next season? Sunday nights are not the same since Big Love is over!
Love Love Love..
..This show..
It's one of the best things on tv these days (especially since I'm mourning the loss of Battlestar Galactica). I've always been rather unnerved by Chloe Sevigny, and that just helps in this show because she's a wee bit creepy. Fantastic acting though - she must relish the amazing character she plays.
I *heart* Jeanne Tripplehorn. Ah, I remember having a huge crush on her when I was a kid.
I thought I'd hate this show (being rabidly atheist and all) but it's so charming. How will I survive until next season!!
