Best TV moms: From here to maternity

This week, as you'd expect, the internets have been filled with Mother's Day gift suggestions, e-cards (and more e-cards) and, yes, lists. This year's best mothers lists include the usual suspects, plus a few surprises. So, if your homework is done and your room is clean, let's take a look at our favorite TV moms. (Don't sit too close to the screen; it'll ruin your eyes.)

TiVo released one of the more traditional lists, topped by Cosby mom Clair Huxtable.

Clair won by a landslide, with a cool 58 percent of the votes. Phylicia Rashad, who played Clair, attributes her lasting appeal to the character's humanity. "First of all, she was a real human being," said Rashad. "She was a devoted wife and mother with a great sense of humor and a definite awareness of her own self." Plus, Clair is hot.

Tying for second place on TiVo's list are Carol Brady (Florence Henderson) and Marion Cunningham (Marion Ross). Mrs. C. is No. 1, though, over at Mother's Day Central (thanks for the link, Ms. Snarker) and MSNBC.

According to MSNBC, Richie's mom is head and shoulders above Carol Brady because her kids are more fun. "Come on — who would you rather go out with: Richie or Greg? Richie would never let a frog jump on your pizza at the movies. Furthermore, Carol would never have let Fonzie live over the garage."

True enough, but on the hotness scale, I'd have to give Mrs. Brady the edge. Because calling Mrs. C. hot would just be wrong.

At the other end of the maternal style spectrum is No.1 on the About.com Best TV Moms list: Bree Hodge of Desperate Housewives. While Marcia Cross certainly tips the hotness scale, I sure wouldn't want to be one of her scary spawn (or grand-spawn, as the case may be). True, Bree has softened a bit over the past season, but seriously, Best Mom?

About.com's No.2 is a bit better: another gorgeous Housewife, Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman). Lynette probably is closer to a real mom than anyone else on the list so far. When she thought her family was buried under the post-tornado rubble, she let out a primal scream that says more about the essence of motherhood than most anything I've seen on television.

The voting is still in progress at TV.com, and the choices are anything but traditional. If the category were Top MILF (don't ask, Mrs. C), I'd vote for Nancy Botwin, no contest. What can I say? I'm high on Mary-Louise Parker.

However, since the vote was for the mother who represents "the best of small-screen motherhood," I went with Allison DuBois (Patricia Arquette). I mean, any mom who has kids like hers has to be one of the best. Bridgette rocks.

We interrupt this post for a personal note. Have you sent your mother a card? I know that sometimes we don't like our moms very much. Or we think Mother's Day is just a greeting card holiday without real meaning (not the case, btw). I relate. My mother and I weren't at all close — much of the time we didn't even like each other. But when she died, I found a box full of every card, letter and sticky note I'd ever given her. So send a card; call her; go see her. And be sure to wear clean underwear in case you're in an accident.

OK, now it's your turn. Who's on your list of best TV moms?

A Gal with Guns and a Mom!

    Sarah Connor all the way!

I dig the whole mama bear thing - Lena Headey as militia mom....need I say more?!

    Surely Mama Summers or Mama

Surely Mama Summers or Mama Cohen are the ultimate modern TV mums?  I mean, how many mums deal with Slayer daughters and still manage to be uber-cool?  And I love Mama Julie Cooper, but Mama Cohen is surely the epitome of awesome mums?  While I guess Joyce is not quite the sort of character to make these lists (although she should be) I am surprised that Kirsten Cohen didn't make any of them, I guess The OC is gone and forgotten :( (but not by me :) )

I will back you on Nancy Botwin!  Gotta love Mary-Lou!  She is definately my big love at this precise moment in time!

Bree?  Bree might be my favourite Housewife (closely followed by Lynette) but surely Lynette is the ulti-mum, not Bree?!?!

My vote goes to mama ROSEANNE

    Wasn't she fabulous?

    Samantha Stevens on Bewitched

When I was a kid, I used to think she would be the coolest mom.  Nice and pretty.  What more could you ask for, except that if she were my mom, I would be able to blink and get anything I wanted!

    Lorelai Gilmore

Come on people, you cant beat Lorelai Gilmore! Shes the best TV mom ever. I do also love Nora Walker, Lily Van der Woodsen (she gave up Roofus for Serena! yes,she could have been a bit better with Eric, but she'll make up for it!!!) Julie Cooper (Bitch? yes, but a bitch that would do literally ANYTHING for her kids!!) Joy Turner (she married Earl to make sure her baby had a daddy, again, a bitch that would do anything for her kids!) Mortia Adams (because she just embraces the wierdness), Karen Van Der Beek (Californication mom, she's a very open, accepting mom) and Lucille and Lyndsey Bluth (granted, they're not the worlds most loving moms, but they're still great. Lines like "You want your belt to buckle not your chair" come from a good place really!!! :) ) Paula Carlin (no I'm kidding, I would NOT like to be stuck with her as a mom!!!)

I like to hope I'll be a good mom, but tbh I'll probably just end up being a bitch. Sucks for you kiddies!

    I was waiting for someone

I was waiting for someone to mention Lorelai!  I'd say I want her to be my Mom, but that'd actually be a little disturbing given how hot I think she is.  So I'll pass on that.  But she's still my #1 favorite TV Mom, for sure.

Following her, I'd say Joyce from Buffy, Patty from My So-Called Life (because the actress did such a good job with the role), and Nancy Botwin from Weeds because of her utter MILF-ocity.

    ***

EMILY:  You were on the phone.
    RICHARD:  Long distance.
    LORELAI:  God?
    RICHARD:  London.
    LORELAI:  God lives in London?
RICHARD:  My mother lives in London.
    LORELAI:  Your mother is God?

    JillBennettLover's picture

    Totally Agree

Lorelai Gilmore is the greatest tv moms ever and i wished she was my mom too...but like you said - that just might get creepy!

Another one of my favorite tv moms would have to be Mama Harper from Mama's Family b/c lets face it she's super funny and doesn't put up with any of their shit!

    Susi's picture

    That's what I was thinking

Lorelai Gilmore is definetly the best TV mom ever. But Kirsten Cohen is pretty cool too.

Oh, and Yvonne Atkins on Bad Girls. I know her kids were all grown up but still she was pretty awesome and she even adopted Denny.

    Julia

For those of us of a "certain" age, how about some love for Julia Baker - played by Diahann Cannon - on the show "Julia." She was waaaayyy before Clare Huxtable as a strong, Black, woman. Plus, she wasn't a well-to-do bourgy; she was a single, working woman raising her son,. The show was revoluntary at the time it first went on air in 1968 (I believe that it was the first mainstream tv show with a Black woman as lead and the first show named for the Black lead character) and Ms. Cannon took a lot of sh** for it. She paved the way for characters like Ms. Huxtable, umpteen years later.

    Mommy...

When I was younger and used to watch the Cosby Show on Nick at Nite every night, I used to dream that Mrs. Huxtable was my mom. Dreamed, Daydreamed, i sooo wanted it to be a reality, lol.

So she's numero uno. Then Mary-Louise Parker. Then Felicity Huffman. They're all mentioned here, but they're my top 3.

    Sue Johnston!

I know it's a film rather than a TV series, but I loved Sue Johnston playing Ella, Lena Heady's character Luce's mum. And she was absolutely fantastic in the TV series 'The Royle Family' as Barbara!!! Not in a MILF way though :-) ...

    Bette and Tina

Its pretty funny that no one has mentioned Bette or Tina, maybe because Angelica seems to disappear for 3 or 4 episodes at a time only to surface as minor plot point!!!
