Tori Amos and the "American Doll Posse": best Tori ever?

What do you want Tori Amos to be for Halloween?

Win the Tori Amos Halloween Contest and you get to dress Tori for her Halloween show in Pittsburgh. (No word on who gets to undress her.) The concert is part of her American Doll Posse tour in support of her latest album.

American Doll Posse is a concept album, a musical story told through five women — Santa, Clyde, Isabel, Tori and Pip — based on Aphrodite, Persephone, Artemis, Demeter and Athena, feminine archetypes from Greek mythology. (Each character has her own website, linked to the names above.) In concert, Amos performs the first half as one of the characters, chosen at random. She steps out of character for the second half. This music video of "Big Wheel" introduces the posse.

The Boston Herald described the effect of Amos' performance as Pip, the character who channels the virgin Greek warrior goddess, Athena.

"Dressed in rubber leggings and a black wig, Amos performed dark, edgy selections of old and new material as her alter ego, writing and wriggling, grabbing at her crotch, getting down on all fours and spasmodically shaking before flipping-off the crowd. While it may have seemed over the top, it was effective: You almost believed the woman on stage was an imposter."

Just to make sure we get to see all members of the posse in action, Amos is posting live sets from her American Doll Posse tour for purchase on the Legs & Boots website (just in the U.S. currently, but they're working availability to other countries). Details and ticket information for the tour are here. To tide you over, here's Amos with "Bouncing Off Clouds."

Have you heard American Doll Posse yet? How does it compare to previous Tori brilliance? If you've been to one of the concerts, how was it? Which member of the posse did you meet? And what do you think Tori should be for Halloween?

    Loooooove Tori!

I saw her when she was doing the European leg of the tour & the show was just stunning, easily the best concert I've ever been to! I got Santa which was just fabulous & sexy as hell & the songs rock!

The album itself...love all the songs (seriously there isn't 1 song I dislike on it) but it isn't quite as brilliant as some of her other albums, still it is one of my albums of the year so far so well worth checking out :)

    I heart Tori!

    I love this album.

Then again, I love all her music.

Still, I doubt she'll ever make another album that will have such an impact on me as Little Earthquakes and Under the Pink had back in the day...

    Love Tori

I'm completely in love with Tori, thanks to my girlfriend. We are going to one of her concerts in a few weeks and I can't wait, especially now that I have heard what she does during them. It will be interesting I have no doubt. I love this album but I think Choir Girl Hotel and Bee Keeper are my favorites. Love the song "The Power of Orange Knicker." Only Tori.

    Witnessed the Boston show

I don't mean to brag but I was front row center for the most incredible Tori show ever the 10/18 performance at the Orpheum. The energy she gave while she was dressed as Pip made it such a rocking evening. Every song was performed to its fullest and she played two of my all time favorites to hear live, Etienne and Take to the Sky. American Doll Posse is a great album and I think Tori has returned (although I believe she never left) to some of her earlier stylings.

    *jealous*

I bought the official boot of that show & Pip was absolutely rocking that night! And her performance of Take to the Sky...aaaah I adore it, can't stop listening to that! And the little improv about Donald Trump & Miss Massachusetts, lol! Must have been one hell of an amazing show to be at.

    Tori Amos I love you

Tori Amos I love you eternally but whyyyyy are you so crazy.

Although I'm not gonna lie, I kind of really want to see her while she's still touring like this. Just... for the experience, I swear. I may have missed my chance, but I'm hoping she'll do, like, a later one or something.

Up until the punching, it was a real nice party...

    God, I love her

I want to see her in concert SO bad. She and Sarah McLachlan are my favorite artists, and I'm dying to see one of them live.

Don't have the new album, just a couple of songs, and although I really like them, they're not as... intense as her older work. But still, she rocks.

    Best concert ever!

Saw her in July on her European tour and was completely blown away. Love the new album.

    Bat For Lashes

Lurve Tori and was gutted to miss her UK gigs earlier this year.
Was wondering though if any one here has heard Bat For Lashes?
Natasha Khan has been compared  to Tori and Kate Bush, which can never be a bad thing. Although it is mainly because she has a v. idiosyncratic kooky style which is hard to label/pin down.

Her live shows are also meant to be pretty magical, which I'm looking forward to discovering for myself this Sunday when I go to a small gig in London. Anyone else going?

Btw She is also v.stunning, but that's of course not why I'm going-honest!

OMG, I <3 Bat For Lashe

OMG, I <3 Bat For Lashes. I would love to see them live. I live in the states tho, and it might be awhile before they come around here. Havent found many people who know of them, so its awesome that you mentioned them on here.

Yeah, I heard Bat for Lashes

Yeah, I heard Bat for Lashes a few months ago for the 1st time & am utterly hooked now...wonderous music, never been to any of her shows though I hear from other people that they're excellent!

    Zombie

Duh, it's Pittsburgh. She should go as a zombie. Other than ketchup, it's what we're famous for. We've got the highest per capita zombie population of any mid-level city outside of Eastern Europe. In the 70s the state travel bureau tried to market the city as an exciting/edgy tourist destination, but that backfired when a group of Taiwanese business men got bit by some zombie strippers and had to be quarantined. It was this big international scandal. I think The Onion reported on it.

You either love her or you hate her...

Andy Jen, we are also famous for Heinz Pickle Pins - or are those before your time? Pittsburgh is known also for Iron City Beer, IC Lite, bad roads (pothole capitol of the world) and having too man gosh-darn bridges, which is part of the great Iron Worker Conspiracy (which also accounts for the Iron City Beer).

    But I digress.

Tori, Tori, Tori... you either love her or you hate her. Which Tori would I choose... ONE WITHOUT THE GOSH-DARNED BAND! Tori alone with her piano, wearing leggings and a dress as a shirt, before Neil Gaiman drew her but after Y KANT TORI read... around the time between Little Earthquake and Under the Pink...

    how's that?

    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    Woo

Woo, I'm old, so I have a pickle pin somewheres around here. Wasn't it required that school kids take a field trip to the Heinz plant? I still think that Heinz makes the best sweet gherkins. But I'm telling you, you can go anywhere in the world, literally, and still get Heinz ketchup. Maybe not in North Korea, outside of Kim Jong Il's fortress, but, you know.
    MsWoo's picture

I cannot eat any other ketchup

I once went somewhere in this state commonwealth and found Hunts... it was APPALLING! There is only one, and yes it is Heinz. I also miss the CLARK bar building with the blinking C-L-A-R-K letters. Is the Westinghouse one still there? It has been a while since I made it back to the burgh! There was no taste in the world as sweet as a FRESH CLARK bar - and we used to get a WHOLE CANDYBAR every Halloween when we trick or treated. None of these measily little mouthfulls you get today, I tell ya!

    Yes, I am old...

At the sake of staying on topic, Tori is old too. I saw her in her hometown of Baltimore and guess who sat in the row in front of me... Doc and Ellen Amos! They were back in Baltimore with their church group and were having a reunion at Tori's show.

Ellen agreed with me, btw - she did not like the backup band there either. She and I both hightailed it out of there a few songs into the first set. I actually climbed the wall to get OUT of the FLOOR section. Complete turn around from those days at the Civic Arena, seeing such groups as Ratt, and all the other hairbands...

    ahh... memories.

(psst... jen... is Primanti Bros still as good as I remember? I miss having my french fries and cole slaw on the sandwich).

    jennifer from pittsburgh's picture

    P Bros

Yes, Primanti Bros is still good as ever! I do find them a bit elitist though, how they eye you suspiciously if you want your fries on the side. Exsqueeze me, but I like to dip my fries in ketchup! Btw, Woo, if you make a trip back, let us know because we'll take you to The Best Diner Ever on the southside. The cook is drunk most of the time and demands that your meal be comped. It's nothing but diner bedlam!
    MsWoo's picture

    I love places like that!

Primanti's always did hate it when people ordered fries on the side. More about da burg in PM, Jennifer, before the Tori fans arrive and throw Cornflakes ;)

    all hail the lion queen

despite the searing beauty of tori amos, i really, really never expected to see anything tor here.

that's awesome. ADP is the saddest tour of my life, because i live in maui now[-i] and i can't drive all over the place to see her. i'm from connecticut, so uhh, it was a pretty easy route :(

my original [also from CT] to[u]r bud lives in SF though, so i WILL be making it to the oakland shows... and i'm stoked. whoever said they were at the orpheum 18th show, my sister was a few seats over!!!! i was sooo jealous when she called during virginia!!! what a good setlist :O

anyway. enough tori ramble, i just wanted to mention that it was a pleasure to see her on AE.

    shygurl99's picture

She was my first woman crush

I use to love seeing her videos when I was younger. I think Tori is part of the reason I have a weak spot for redheads ! Her music is great and so is her style.

    have loved tori forever

this may be slightly offtopic but i'm feeling a bit "ranty"

while i'm jealous of the people that can afford (time and moneywise) to follow her during all or parts of her tour, i have no problem with them doing that, even if THEY'VE ALREADY SEEN HER!!! lol

what i do have a problem with is the fact that even sitting at a computer the second tickets go on sale it's almost impossible to get them. every year she comes near where i can see her, the tickets sell out immediately and then go up for sale at horrific prices on ebay or whatever ticketwhore site they post them at. i don't go to that many concerts (expensive) but tori is the one person I HAVE TO SEE LIVE. she's amazing. i don't care if you think she's weird or don't like her music if you have any respect for music at all to SEE her live and HEAR her live (not lipsynched, NOT choreographed) is unbelievable.

i'm just so completely bitter right now that i can't see her this year because even though she added a second show to that venue (OAKLAND) i couldn't get tickets for either and now numerous assholes who have amazing seats to numerous cities are selling them at outrageous prices and people who reallyreallyreallyreally love certain artists are completely priced out of the market.

    /end rant

    *sigh*
