"Army Wives" mini-cap: touched by an angel

Seriously – an angel? Who are you, Army Wives, and what have you done with my show? Maybe I expect too much. I mean, sure, losing a daughter will lead to a crisis of faith. But from Katherine Fugate, I expect something more compelling than an angel who tells Claudia Joy that it was just Amanda’s time and C.J. shouldn’t blame God and all you need is love. Sigh.

But let’s look at this week’s episode, “The Messenger,” and then I’d like to hear what you think of the show’s direction.

The good news about the angel, whom we meet right away outside the church that Claudia Joy can’t bring herself to enter, is that he’s a lot more appealing than Earl, the Bubba angel in Saving Grace.

C.J. is, of course, still grieving and having a hard time getting back into her routine. As she tells Mr. Angel, she has to be strong for everyone else, when what she really wants is to be left alone. As a result, she’s not intimate with Michael or involved with Emmalin. Michael attempts to normalize Emmalin’s life by teaching her to drive a stick. (I never realized how gross that sounds until just now.) But since that rite is traditionally passed from mother to daughter in their family, the driving session doesn’t go well. And Emmalin realizes as she sits behind the wheel that she blames the Army for Amanda’s death and just doesn’t feel safe anymore.

Meanwhile, Betty the bar owner has moved in with Roxy and is not exactly a gracious house guest. She complains about everything, dislikes the kids and generally is a big ol’ grumpy head. We eventually learn that her cancer has progressed and she has to start chemo. I wouldn’t be surprised if we have to watch her die a painful and dramatic death – that’s kind of how the show is going these days. But we do see Roxy at her best, calling Betty on her stuff yet also going with her to chemo. I know some people get annoyed with Roxy, but I kinda like her.

The good news is that we got to see Denise a lot, even though she was flirting with her patient Mac instead of C.J. It was kind of confusing for the patient to be named Mac since Catherine Bell played Mac on Jag, but actually, this was the best part of the episode, IMO. The flirting was innocent and led to an easy kind of back and forth between patient and nurse. As Mac talked about his life back home and how he’d miss riding his bike, Denise, in turn, opened up about feeling less strong and independent as she was in her bike-riding youth. I have a feeling we’re going to see some of Denise’s rebel emerge in the next few weeks, thanks in part to Mac’s going away present. I also have a feeling Frank’s not going to like it one bit.

Near the end, once Mr. Angel gets Claudia Joy to release some of her anger, she and Michael have a stick session of their own (sorry) and she reconnects with Emmalin via an emotional first driving lesson. The dialog about learning to trust and mother/daughter tradition and moving forward was cheesy, but I got weepy so I guess it worked.

What did you think about this episode? With its theme of transition, I’m hoping that it marks a transition away from melodrama. However, previews indicate *spoiler* that Trevor will be injured and Denise will toy with having an affair (with a man, unfortunately), so the potential for heavy-handed writing remains.

So, what shall we do with Army Wives? Are you still watching? Do you want these mini-caps to continue? I won’t stop watching, simply because seeing Catherine Bell flash that seductive smile is worth an hour of my time. If you want recaps, you got ‘em. But if you’ve lost interest, we’ll fill the space with something you want to read. If you’re an Army Wives fan, even if you don’t usually comment, it’s time to de-lurk. Speak now or forever, oh, you know.

    recaps

I, for one, appreciate reading your recaps. I hardly ever get to watch the show... which I generally like to do. However, with this new sappy turn I think I would rather just read your comments. Especially now that the story line with Renee O'Connor doesn't seem to be happening... tear... So, thanks!

    I agree that Army Wives

I agree that Army Wives does suck now but I am with you. I will contine to watch just because I have the biggest crush on Catherine Bell (I can't help it... she is cute) so you can contine to recap if you want to.

    Pyewacket's picture

I agree with what you write...

about the show just not being the same. And yet, I cannot give up on the show yet. I think it is the strength of the cast that pulls me back. And I am liking the recaps because I like to read your take on things and read others' comments.

The angel thing was too much and confusing...and not in a good way. The little boy could see him and yet I guess the angel was leaving for other parts and so both CJ and Roxy's son would no longer be seeing the angel.

I liked seeing the other part of Roland with Emmalin and I hope they develop that with she and her friends coming to him...that might be interesting.

Bottom line is that I really like the cast; I am not giving up on the show yet; and yes, please to the continued recaps! :)

    Cheestastic

i was so looking forward to ROC appearing. I'm actually stuck watching Army Wives because my wife loves it. Still she even admits that so far this season is lacking in the same caliber of story lines as last season. But I definately like recaps because of the hilarious comments made about the subtext between CJ and Denise which my wife swears doesn't exsist.

Still watching (but don't know why)

I started watching because Renee O'Connor was to appear and now that story line  died and with it, some of my interest.  But I got my partner wactching it now and there is really nothing on 10pm Sunday night.

I like the Denise gets a bike thing and the XO who is now pregnant could be interesting (maybe).  So, I vote for more recaps to make the watching more fun!

    Re-Caps

I watch Army Wives to see Catherine Bell (anything with her in it is worth my time).  I enjoy the re-caps because I can get another lesbians veiw on the subtext between CJ and Denise.

    It's On!

Well, sure, the whole angel/messenger plot was pretty much beyond the pale for Army Wives. But there's no need to take it out on Earl, girlfriends.

That's to say, yeah, right. "Harry" was some kind of Xtreme display of the cloying sweetness were're apparently stuck with on AW this season. But Earl is something else entirely. And "bubba" doesn't even begin to cover it.

If you need a reminder, try DameRhetorica's recap from early last season. Now that's an example of TV's "touched by an angel" theme at its most sophisticated, with apologies to Bill Cobbs. He's a fine actor who happens to have a JAG connection, for those of you keeping score.

But back to the subject a hand. Starting here and now, it's on :: the first annual TV angel smackdown. That's FAT AS, with a nod to Dorothy Snarker, who made today smackdown day.

Next up :: the season premiere of Saving Grace on 7/14.

You say hellraiser like it's a bad thing.

    Please keep recapping Army Wives

I keep forgetting to watch it or I get distracted by another show. lol I keep catching it at the end where there's just 10 minutes left. I read your recaps to figure out what happened in the first 35 minutes. And so far your recaps are far more better then the show it self.

Tiny rant: Why the hell can't Betty just not like children? I for one love kids but I understand those who just don't have the patience for them. Why couldn't that have been something weird or quirky about her instead of making her into the already super depressing character that she is. First she has cancer, then her bar gets blown up, and now we learn she's mean to kids because she's always wanted one. Goddamn it give a break here.  I can only take so much bullshit at a time. First they kill off the hot sister, then they turn Roxy into the whinest character alive (I thought that title belonged solely to Meredith Grey but I was wrong), then they have what's-her-face keep her baby even though we all know it's not something she really wants to do. Why couldn't they have had her be strong about her decision to put her career above making a family with her cheating husband (I love Roland but it still doesn't change the fact that he cheated on his wife  and then lied about it), and now they've given the awesome bar owner with cancer the"I hate kids cause' I can't have'em" storyline. I didn't want to like this show at first but after watching the first couple of episodes I was hooked. And now I'm pissed because I feel like they're quickly destroying a good thing.

    *exhales* I feel better.

Sometimes I wonder what Im really watching

I know that this is just supposed to be a tv show, but I can't help but feel that people who watch this really think that this is how the Army is. I mean yeah we all have our ups and downs, and the Army can sometimes screw you over, but the problems they show seem to  made for tv. I mean we should see more of how Roxy and Denise deal with the fact that their husbands are overseas, or they fact that Denise's son has a great chance of going to Iraq, or the fact that Joan has to deal with  her preganancy  being a glass ceiling for her. As a former solider in the Army I was excited to see a show that was willing to show just what Army life was like, but now it seems they just want good ratings. I do have one compliment though, the berets they are wearing now looks like one a solider might actually wear, unlike last season wear it looked like they were just put on there heads and away they went.

    I just started watching

I just started watching this show. I like most of the characters (especially Claudia Joy and Denise)...but I find Roxy to be extremely annoying. Seriously, I keep wanting to strangle her. The angel thing seemed a little weird but I was willing to go with it. I agree that the Denise and Mac interaction was really great. I hope they do more stuff like that.

    Still watching because it's

Still watching because it's Catherine Bell and now she has a bike on the show and I'm THAT easy. So yes to the recaps.

As for last episode, it sucked. It was worse than the one before and I fast forwarded through it. What more is there to say? Denise, flirting with that guy, kinda cute I guess, in a (yawn) heterosexual way.

Katherine Fugate, please give RoC her lesbian part back, mmkay?
    Much thanks, me.

    The angel thing with

The angel thing with Claudia Joy was a bit much. For a minute I thought I was watching the PAX network and it's was an episode of Touched by An Angel.

Though, I will continue to watch Army Wives and read your recaps.

    Pffft

I watched one ep of this show only because I was preparing to care since Renee Oconnor was going to be joing to cast. Since she's not now, (anger issues ensue here) Ill no longer be wasting my time. This is a little too "Lifetime" for me, and without Renee, I just view watchiing that one ep as an hour of my life Ill never get back.

    Keep writing the recaps

With my crazy work schedule, I don't always get home to see the show.

So these mini-caps are a great way to keep with the show, so the next time i see I wont be like, what the heck is going on!

    just my .02 cents

    You're the boss(es)

OK - you got it - mini-cap is on. Thanks for the feedback!
